the first problem was is the false assumptions that halo is a good game
it had lackluster singe player and average level design
but it was a fun multiplayer thing for dudedbros who turned out to be an untapped market
(the xbox was pretty much the dreamcast 2 and at first they tried to go with quirky games for nerds)
and it was really microsofts marketing dark magic that made halo big

second problem is that all of these halo killers were rushed, even the ones with plenty of neat features had plethora of bugs
of course sony was not the only one who didn't get it: in the end as you all know halo committed suicide

It was stoppable, but no equally experienced direct competition appeaed r on the market and killer games only scratched the surface while ignoring strong underlying vision.
Later Halo games covered mentioned vision with $-sign glasses and started YOLOing into shovelware purgatory.

Who cares about halo when Doom 2 exists. The breed of fps games spawned by Half-Life and Unreal, which includes Halo, are shit.

Hitscan swiss cheese simulators made in Doom and Build engines aren't so hot either.

Pretty sure the series died after 3 because of stupid design choices, and black ops 1/2 came out around then to cement cod as the console shooter king

not so much halo itself as the fact that the ps2 wasnt capable of supporting an online fps at the time the way xbox was. people were happy to pay for xbox live because it actually worked well.

You can't kill Halo until you make a Halo clone, which has never happened.
Halo is more than just regenerating health and a 2 weapon limit, the people who try to copy it don't realize that because they probably haven't played the game to feel the subtleties that make a Halo game good.
Then they get to a point where they realize it's easier to just copy Call of Duty instead.
The closest thing is Splitgate but that game sucks ass.

And of course we all know what killed Halo for real was 343, it will never recover and even if a real dev team with love and actual talent for making games makes a Halo, the stench of Halo's last decade will always hang over it.

The reason why Halo died is because CoD4 came out and it was the first one that was at Halo quality and accidentally tapped into an untouched market of making realistic shooting games for dudebros. That's what they wanted to play deep down since Halo 1 and when COD4 came out, they dropped Halo 3 in an instant.

The disaster that was halo 2 ruined halo. It's literally like watching a beautiful indie darling masterpiece go absolutely Hollywood and sell out to normies for the sequel

>the only thing that ended up killing Halo was itself
Not entirely true. CoD 4 played a massive part in doing that. It's not retro but if we're talking about Halo killers then we need to look beyond /vr/ for the answer. If you compared CoD 4 to any of the Halo games up until that point, it actually falls pretty short. Hell, compare it to Halo 3 and Halo 3 didn't just offer more, it had a far better multiplayer experience compared to Modern Warfare.
Do you know how it managed to kill Halo? When you play Call of Duty online, you can rank up. Halo 3 does the same, but CoD goes further by tying unlockables to the ranking system. If you wanted to use new weapons, perks, etc. you had to rank up with XP, and the only way to get XP was to keep playing Call of Duty, and in every CoD game since MW1 the ranking system cycled into itself as an infinite loop. Halo relied on its already-solid foundation and (arguably) balanced system of various mechanics to keep its playerbase content, but with CoD's system they ensured that players would be required to keep coming back to it if they wanted to experience more of the game.

Saying Sony put out a hit is retarded, but there were PLENTY of games like Haze, The Conduit, and Fire Warrior. You even had stuff like Advent Rising - people saying it would kill Halo while being a third-person shooter.
"Halo Killers" were everywhere in marketing back then.

that's more on the marketing theme hyping a game to sell it to the public, same reason there were CoD killers in the PS3/360 era
