I'm looking at BROKEN consoles, and sellers on ebay are asking $40 for junk gameboy pockets with trashed shells and burnt screens. That's $5-10 less than a working one. What the fuck happened?

in the past normal people would buy old videogames to just play them. now all those people moved on to emulation and the only ones left are collectors/hoarders which would massively distort the pricing.

It's simple, supply and demand, if people know a thing they have can be bought for a high amount of money, even if it seems to expensive, they still do it, because why wouldn't they? As long as the target market for a product buys it, because the demand's larger than the supply, the people who want to buy this stuff are at the mercy of sellers, no real way around it, the hobby's gotten too big.

I just stick to emulation nowadays, sold up all of my retro stuff years ago, still have a PS4 sitting in my living room in case I decide to play anything I find interesting which just so happens to be new.

I know the hardware itself is part of the hobby, I love it as much as anyone else, but it's too much, while ROMs, RetroArch and CRT shaders are all free, all I pay for is retro styled controllers now.

Collectors are the ones these things belong to. The reason they're overpriced is speculatortards and cryptotards chasing the next manchild stock. They saw the popularity of retro games explode during covid and now they just buy shit for the sole purpose of selling at a profit.

No it's like I said: People buy them for the sole purpose of treating them as stocks. They try to buy low and sell high, and sometimes throw the grading scam into the mix. When did this boogeyman of evil "collector millenials buying old games for no reason" come from? Sounds like something that would literally be started by the speculator retards.

This is what I do. I still own all of my retro hardware but I never use it anymore since emulating is just easier + I have access to every retro console this way.

>>10613719
It's a little of both it seems. The major distributors are supported by the younger crowd who gullibly choose to collect on original hardware rather than just emulating or buying a modern compilation. This is why I suggest that if somebody wants to own a game physically, they should go with the latter.

There is no reason to spend upwards of $100 on a single retro game when you can find it for cheaper on a regular modern console or Steam while supporting the actual developers. Emulation is obviously the best option but some people are weird about that for whatever reason

Most broken video games consoles can be repaired with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol. And no matter how filthy it is, the Chinese will sell you a brand new shell for it. In fact, I would genuinely estimate that 90% of purchased Gameboys get their shells tossed and replaced by zoomers and the general public. Even if the system needs to be recapped, someone can buy it and repair it easily, a common skill for people who collect this stuff. If the screen is burnt, you can toss in a "modern" cheapo ips panel or replace the burnt reflector

I’d doubt that. The quality of repro shells is, generally, abysmal. Bought a few ds shells for some rekt ds lites I got and god damn they are so fucking bad.

>> No.10614485

>>10614469
Repro shells are only trustworthy if it's like Commodore guys who do it as a labor of love and not a quick buck like a random-ass Chinese factory. I agree a lot of them are made of very cheesy brittle plastic much lower quality than the original was. You would be better just getting a 3D printer and making your own, you could probably do a better job.

re: Gameboy shells. The original ones were made of pretty heavy-gauge plastic because Nintendo fully expected and planned for kids dropping them on hard surfaces. I doubt those Chinese ones are made as well.

It depends on the console. Anything built like a toy made of nintendium is good to replace with Chinese nintendium. My n3ds replacement shell is fucking garbage. But Gameboy mods are probably the highest volume market in retro. Someone will sell a Gameboy that's broken, someone will buy it and fix it in 10 minutes, put a new shell and screen on it, wether it needed replacing or not, and sell it for over a hundred bucks

Inflation. The $200 the Dreamcast sold for is like $400 today.

>> No.10614914

They were cheap 20 years ago, because 20 years ago they were crappy 1 or 2 gen behind consoles that people were unloading in mass, and the only people buying them were the poorfags who couldn't afford a PS2/1 and fished the dollar bin for carts for their SNES or Genesis.

What happened since then is that every loser in his 30s with disposable income is trying to get back their childhood memory, or build a collection they dreamed of as a child, or they are some youtube streamers who get $100 tips when showing off the latest shelf warmer they bought off of ebay. Consequently the demand is up, and because this is old shit that is not produced any longer, the supply is dwindling. Plus add in inflation, the dollar lost almost a third of its value since the 90s.

If you want cheap shit, right now you should look at PS3s and Xbox 360s. They fall into the same category as a SNES in 2004: too old for anyone to consider them valuable, too new for it to be retro. You can get them at $10 for a broken and $40 for a working console, and you can buy discs for 2-3$. And once the kids who played them in 2010 start getting enough money to build collections, they'll be worth a lot more.

High. At least, that’s my guess. Emulation of portables is never great, and that goes double for a 3DS. 2 screens, 3d, and touch? Plus, all the variations and limited editions make it a prime console to increase in value. Not to mention the IPS bullshit. You should have picked up a few units years ago, but now isn’t a terrible time either.

Personally, I want to grab a Solgaleo/Lunala new 3ds xl just cause I don’t have a new 3ds xl and I like the design. Maybe I’ll get a 2ds too just to complete the collection.

Based on what?

>so no you dont need to collect to play games.
That's not what's being said. Let go of your preconceived nonsense and try to actually read what you're responding to. There are a million ways to play games, you just have to force yourself to believe in a divide between "people who enjoy collecting old games" and "people who play old games" so you have an excuse to demonize the former.

>There is no reason to spend
You're calling other people zoomers and then obsessing over prices and how much other people spend on things.

lmao
You're supporting publishers. The "actual developers" of all these old games getting remasters and collections released have long since left their respective companies or retired completely. All you're doing is putting money in the pockets of the companies that own the rights to the names.
