Need? No the original game is a lot of fun. Zero mission is really awesome in a different way. It's the better game too. People definitely ignore the original because this is such a great game. That's fine, they can play 1 out of 2 great Metroid games. There's no losing there.

I'd say yes simply for being a good game in it's own right but because it created the Zero Suit which resulted in a complete erasure of Samus's leisure wear at the end of the games and forever put her in a more streamlined but redundant and boring battle suit? Fuck Zero Mission.

I actually don't find the zero suit all that sexy. It's a generic catsuit. I much prefer her outfit at the end of Super Metroid. When she takes off her armor she should let her hair down and be in a state of undress that implies relaxation. Not be wearing a second battle suit but skintight this time. It actually made the stealth sections of Zero Mission less tense than they could have been had she been forced to sneak around in a bra and panties where she would seem legitimately vulnerable.

Really hate the crash section, it made her pathetic. All it took was a a single shot to down the ship, which is ridiculous. But the biggest crime was cursing the series with the spandex suit, which ruined her as strong, enigmatic character forever. I get the need for the stun gun thing because you want to give the player more to do than just move around but dressing her like Catwoman just makes her seem kind of irritated she has to use stealth as opposed to in actual danger as she'd seem if she were in her underwear. It's the difference between John McClane in Die Hard where he's so unprepared he's not even wearing shoes and Solid Snake in Metal Gear who uses stealth because that's how he operates.

I don't think a lot of westerners realize how much CERO affected the industry. Since CERO is stricter than PEGI and the ESRB and any Japanese game has to go through it first, it means that CERO is effectively worldwide and subsumes the more lenient ratings boards overseas.

In general, Japanese media watchdogs have gotten SUPER strict, they began slowly but surely gaining a lot of say against violent content on Japanese videogames, tv series and anime, depiction of suggestive themes and others.
Japanese laws in regards custom vehicles, for example, have gotten so strict, the TV Show Kamen Rider hasn't been able to do bike stunts since the early 00's due to this, and sometimes they gotta justify somehow being on a racing circuit just to be able to film shit, or else rely on CGI.

Yup, sometime after the Pokemon seizure incident Japan went through an intense "protect the children" movement and like any such movement, vastly over did it. Because of CERO even Z rated games like God of War had to have the boobs censored and even then the game had to be sold from behind the counter at shops as if it were a porn mag. Mortal Kombat used to be released over there but once CERO came into effect they didn't bother even trying.

You should feel free to enjoy whatever you like, but claiming that Amazon Samus is the only true Samus is insane.
You're talking about an interpretation of a character the original creators had nothing to do with, and which appeared exclusively on two pages of a strategy guide released in an entirely different country. It is as close to fanfiction as a piece of official media can get.
I could just as easily say that the only true Samus is the one from the 1994 manga Marumaru to Marumaru who wears pretty dresses and likes going on long walks in flowery fields and be no less wrong.

Metroid is a tribute/ripoff (depending how generous you're willing to be) of western sci-fi films like Alien anyway according to the series creator, so Samus being a tall buff western woman makes far more sense than being a skinny little anime waif that is nonthreatening enough for Japanese manlets to want to become the imaginary husbands of

I think the great thing about Samus as a character is that's she's presented in a kind of vague way that lets you project your ideal woman onto her.
The only things about her that are really set in stone is that she's confident, tough, unshakeable, and not really a people person.
Some people stop there, but I also really like the contrast of that with her also being an elegant, somewhat feminine, very very sexy woman. One that possibly longs to be a normal girl somewhere deep down. There's something about a woman who has an unbreakable armor shell that she sometimes steps out of, just for a while, that I find beautiful.

My interpretation of her isn't the closest to the source material (and I would argue yours isn't either) but that's okay. Art is a collaborative process. A team of artists made Samus and her games. The team's last member is you, filling in the gaps with your imagination.
It's quite silly to say that the only people who understand Samus are the ones who consider everything released after the 1994 Super Metroid Nintendo Player's Guide to be noncanon. That's just one of many possible viewpoints, different ways to "fill in the gaps". No more right or less wrong than mine.

By the way, if the image I used with this post makes you gag, feel free to direct your abuse at me, because it's fanart I personally drew of her ~six years ago.

I think what puts people off is that because of the nature of long running video game franchises that started on the NES, you had a bunch of establishing games that did as you say: leave it relatively vague, but then the Gamecube era rolled around and suddenly there's a lore dump and now that version of the character from 2004 or whatever has become the standard ever since by whoever at the company happened to be the one at the reigns that day and commandeered the franchise. This kind of thing happened to most of these games like Zelda and Castlevania. If you happen to not like that ONE decision in that ONE game, well fuck you I guess because now you're going to be seeing it for the rest of time.

That's very fair. If you came into the series in the 80's or 90's and the new stuff never clicked for you, and you're stuck just gritting your teeth about it forever, you'd be right to feel pretty sour about it.
My first exposure to Metroid was Super Smash Bros. on the 64 so I never had that disconnect myself. I am very proud to have had the magic moment where I always played Samus thinking he was a cool action dude and when my cousin told me she was a girl I said nuh uh and told him he was a liar. I think that's the most important part of the Metroid experience so I'm happy I didn't miss out on it.
I also had an older sibling who always picked Mario and made me be Luigi. Irreplaceable memories, those two. You can have the biggest CRT or the best retroarch setup in the world, but you'll never be able to recreate that.

I think Metroid fans were treated pretty well though. If you don't like Zero Mission, you have Fusion. If you aren't fond of Fusion you have Prime. If you hate prime you've got romhacks and AM2R. If you can't stand fangames there's Metroid Prime Pinball. If you don't play pinball either there's like, two dozen fuckin' manga and they're all different and you're bound to like at least one. Maybe it ain't the perfect situation for everyone but it could've been way worse.
