10601074 No.10601074 [Reply] [Original]

How much of the actual japanese video game history and it's mythos is distorted by the fact that japanese work ethic/culture is a hellish mobbing combined with bootlicking? Everyone faps to Miyamoto or Yokoi for them being the sole geniuses behind certain Nintendo games or products, but how deep it really goes? How many people actually worked their asses off, so that their bosses could become a worldwide legends? Everyone knows that japanese work culture is very authoritarian and bootlicking when it comes to obeying your boss and dealing with the strong mobbing, so what are the possibilities that most notorious Nintendo legends take too much credit for the work they haven't done?

This post makes me giggle because I immediately think of Tommy Tallarico who is credited for a lot of songs he didn't actually compose, and to some extent Keiji Inafune who designed Mega Man but didn't actually make the games. Conversely I feel like Naoto Ohshima gets almost no credit for designing Sonic the character and there is a woman who spent like a year designing Green Hill Zone whose name I always forget

At first, probably.
I already know that much of Japanese work culture has been focused on substantial, if not severely crazy mobbing and authoritarian in many aspects for quite a long time. The work culture doesn't have the exact same level of mobbing regardless of occupation, though its best to not tip workers in most cases.

In the case of Inafune, the credit I think he does deserve is making the series go on, when MM8 and X4 fell under sales expectations, he managed to convince the execs to not close shop on Mega Man and work with Kaji and Meijin, alongside the X4/8/Legends 2 team on Battle Network. He also did design enemies and bosses alongside Kaji, but outside of MM3 and MMX1 he wasn't the director of the games.

The Japanese working conditions would have been there regardless. Nintendo was a toy company though so it's likely the video game stuff was largely a side gig at first, meaning guys like Miyamoto and Yokoi likely did have a lot of autonomy as those things usually go. It's like how Shrek started off as the loser gig while the "real" work at Dreamworks was Prince of Egypt.

It was all pretty fucking horrible. Not every publisher actually programmed their own games and there were tons of games made on such insane crunches that staffers had to literally live at their desks for months at a time.
If you ever wonder why there's rarely interviews with old programmers from that time, it's because they all fucking hated it and bailed out as soon as they could. People like Miyamoto and the gang stuck around because they got in the boss chair early on and got to ride the crest of being the faces of Nintendo.

I worded that wrong; I was meaning that that's the reason why you don't get many modern interviews from random programmers from back then. Dude, you could ask this for literally any project that requires a team of people. Shows and movies that are a culmination of different writers and staff contributing their own ideas and criticisms, and then one guy gets the main credit and has sole influence on a sequel that ends up sucking. American comics are filled with moments of one guy doing most of the work, and the other guy taking credit and all the money too.
Japan is not unique in that aspect, but yeah the work culture sucks ass and there were some companies that had policies where programmers were not even allowed to have their names in the credits, I think Konami was one

ESLs in general have been getting increasingly proficient at shitposting which means the only fallback is calling them ESLs. The issue is that the large majority of native English posters also post like ESLs, so you get a feedback loop.
The solution is to kill all Americans (Caribs and Africans too, but they don't post much), not just the ones that post here. Killing ESLs won't work, there are too many of them and some of them are literal roaches.

It's not the same. Tommy didn't just ride on their success for the longest time, he actively downplayed what anyone else contibuted so he could appear as the sole genius.

Do you know who Tommy Tallarico is most like? Gene Roddenberry. The creator of Star Trek was the epitome of creators who take credit for everything. Gene was a colossal money grubbing asshole who couldn't keep it in his pants, but he was personally affable and knew how to manipulate a narrative so it's not really until the late 90s/early 00s that people started realizing his detractors weren't people with an ax to grind but rather people with legit grievances over how they were treated. Gene had a habit for if not taking credit for everything, at the very least downplaying the contributions of everyone else. Another thing Gene used to do wasn't so much 'claim' authorship, but more he'd let other people accidentally attribute that authorship to him and simply fail to correct them. For example, the myth surrounding the addition of Worf to the cast. After the character was accepted warmly by the fans, Roddenberry allowed them to believe that Worf was his idea, without correcting them about the truth. When the factual evidence later came out, it showed that it was Bob Justman who conceived the character, and he and Rick Berman who pushed for Worf's addition to the cast. Roddenberry was against it all the way.

Aside from the rewrites and the pushing his way into royalties that didn't belong to him, this is the kind of thing that went on, and with each passing generation the myth grew until it was believed unquestionably.

I mean, for better or worse he refined the look of what would become classic Mega Man, added the Mega Buster and gave plenty of Input, the biggest of them being the creation of Elec Man. Clearly he did enough to be allowed to reign over the series following Kitamura's departure.

It always stuck me as interesting how in the "Complete History of Japanese Game Development" book, Inafune speaks very, very highly of Akira Kitamura and mentioning all "lessons" he gave the team, while one of the Capcom producers of that time does nothing but spew venom at the guy saying he was "weak".

Reminder that Tommy:
-Claimed he was the first western person EVER to work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, because he worked on Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii) despite Americans working on Sonic in the early 90s.
-Claimed he and Shigeru Miyamoto are close friends because he was contracted to make some sound effects for Metroid Prime. When devs involved with the project were asked, they said none of his work made it in and they barely remember seeing him at all.
-Claimed he was the one who came up with the idea for making the original Prince of Persia a mostly silent game (of course a music producer would suggest this) even though his only involvement was porting the DOS game's music to the Game Boy game.
-Stole a banjo song from some random guy's demo reel and called it Andy Asteroids

Also not-vidya:
-Tommy claims his parents never ever drank alcohol on the Atari Age forums, then across several interviews stated that his mother would drink wine with her friends and play Wii
-Claimed he was an MLB Hall of Famer, and his proof was a ring that conveniently out-of-framed the part of the ring that said 'Fantasy Camp'

And most importantly
-Is being sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars because he decided to rent furniture for his giant office, and is defending himself with the argument that "They should have known not to lend me money."

Hell, the former, Tomita, back during the controversial days, mentioned exactly it was Inafune who help nurture the series the most left it became an artifact of the Famicom's mid-life period and forgotten after that. And Aizu remains his drinking budddy so I doubt he was actually hated within the staff. If anyone hated Inafune, it was most likely the upper suits, especially if we go by Aizu's account because he brought him and Tsuda back with their studio Inti Creates to make the Zero series and there was much anger because they're all ex-employees and back then Japanese society heavily shunned workers quitting companies and starting their own in the same business.

In the end, love him, hate him or being indiferent, the series was what suffered the most. 11 was 6 years ago, and Inti was very ill-equipped to create a 3D graphics sidescroller + ports.

Dudes last game where he was in the Directors chair was Mario 64. Everything else hes done has been as a supervisor or producer at best and theres plenty of games the press credited to him that he didn't even touch. It was a pretty harsh reality check when I got internet access and eventually learned he didn't do pretty much fucking anything and yet hes heralded as this Walt Disney of Gaming.

Heres another fun fact about Nintendo that really ripped a lot of the magic away for me. They didn't program pretty much any of their own games. All coding work was farmed out to a company called SRD who basically just makes a bunch of middleware and level editors for game engines they create and the actual people at Nintendo are basically just artists and level designers who put it all together from there. Nintendo clearly lost something when Gunpei quit/died. It took them forever to get another Metroid game out, and then Sakamoto seemed to entirely misunderstand the series in several ways.
The last Zelda and Mario games Miyamoto had real directorial involvement with were the 64 ones, and they definitely represent a high water-mark for a lot of people.
Final Fantasy definitely lost something without Sakaguchi.

This. A lot of western games were made by people with backgrounds in software engineering and television manufacturing. It's why the earliest game consoles had controllers that resembled telephones. "Here's a dozen generic buttons. Use them however you want." Nintendo was a toy company first and foremost and brought a more intuitive eye to the industry.

I tend to distrust western journalism in video games after fiascos like "Miyamoto hates DKC!"
Just go to the japanese sources. The staff who worked on games produced by Miyamoto are all there for everyone to see, and nintendo was also one of the few companies that let their programmers and staff use their real first and last name on the game's credits.

>> No.10606221

Nintendo is so odd. Every classic franchise they have is because some hungry passionate 30 year old was handed the reigns to a new project.

Now every game is overseen by a 60 or 70 year old member of the old guard. And it's all just new entries in those 30+ year old series. Maybe twice a generation they'll throw some crumbs and we'll get a Splatoon and Arms. But the other 40 games are old blood firmly in control.

No, it's not the same because Japan is much much more uniform. Of course non bootlicks get less support and help, it's just that in Japan, 99% of people are licking the boot, so you stand out SO intensely. Other places the kiss ass ratio is much lower.

Japan used to be a culture where if you were embarassing, they'd hand you a knife and you'd have to ritually disembowel yourself. That's how much they care about conformity, appearances and hierarchy.

Western Video Game "Journalism" didn't exist until the 2000s anyway. You talk to anyone back in the 90s who worked on EGM, Game Pro, and the like, and they'll straight up admit that they were just ad-men being paid to shill products.
Zelda II, the most hated game in the series, stayed on Nintendo Power's Top 20 Games for NES from the moment it came out until Dec of 1994 when they stopped polling NES games. NONE of it was to be believed.

Literally just a good game that loads of people liked.

A lot of the hate for Zelda II came later. It was people looking back at the earlier games after the Zelda formula was more of a set in stone thing, and saying "what the fuck? That isn't Zelda!".
