I sincerely hope that none of you spend $100+ before shipping on CRTs, which for the most part are not necessary anymore. I may want another 13 inch CRT for an 80s computer corner, but I'll wait for a local one to show up at a reasonable price before I pay 3 figures for one.

Is 30USD good for a 27'' TrueFlat Philips TV?
It has Component input and included a controller.
It is fairly clean (slight degrading of power button metallic patina) and bright below 50% of brightness/contrast(picture).

Am I ok, tho?

I found it in Facebook Marketplace, sold by a 50yo guy who was probably visiting mom from another city (he had Texas plates, and I live in borderlands Mexico), so I assume it was a Holidays decision because they got Grandma a new TV.

Exactly, if you feel the crt is worth it then get it. Otherwise don't buy it. As long as you are aware you're buying an obsolete piece of technology that can die at any time. I also don't think people should deceive people by selling broken equipment as good or hide defects.

>> No.10599072

>>10599030
I think you underestimate how many of them were used until they broke, or were thrown away. You can keep saying this, but as the years go by it's only going to sound more ridiculous. Sure, scalpers are a thing everywhere; but at the end of the day, given the size and fragility of these devices, geography and demand dictate prices. Nobody's going to give away something when they know if they wait long enough, they'll get somebody to buy it.
Whinge all you like. It's akin to classic cars. Very similar, but arguably even more niche given the fact that fewer individuals are able or willing to work on these devices than there are mechanics capable of repairing old cars.
It's a niche collector's market, every reseller knows this, and they don't care about your feelings

I spent 30 for a Trinitron i came across at a indoor flea market. Of the 70+ i have, its the most i paid. I usually pick up a nice small set a year because fuck you, 8bit stuff looks nice on a little set(but not too little)

>> No.10599129

>>10599072
Exactly it's a free market and a free world and as long as people are not deceived then it's fine to charge whatever you want for them. Doesn't mean people will purchase them but they have the opportunity. Always test a CRT though, especially if spending decent money on it.

>> No.10599136

>>10599072
They don't break at anywhere near the rate you think they break at and they are most definitely not fragile. Most CRTs that "break" are usually minor issues like caps going. The reason they aren't everywhere is because people hauled them to the dump when they got a new tv. The ones that survive is because people were even too lazy to dispose of them and just threw them in the garage until they moved. I see Facebook posts on CRT pages of people discovering 20-30 CRTs from old abandon businesses all the time. They are everywhere and the reason they survive is because most people just don't want to have to move and properly dispose of them. Yes the number of them are going down but for every CRT enthusiast there's like 100 surviving CRTs.

>> No.10599137

>>10599030
Yeah, it depends on if you want just any set, or if you want to get a particular set. If, say, you want an NEC XM29 nowadays, you're probably going to be stuck having to pay FMITA prices, unless you get lucky. And to a lesser degree, if you want a specific model of 80s Trinitron or something, you might not be able to just find one locally. Random late 90s curved tubes and flat CRTs, though? Yeah, chances are you can still find some of those locally if you wait a little bit. What amuses me most are people paying $100+ on ebay for those little TV/VHS combo sets. I guess the buyers are so young that they don't remember that those sets were kitchen-tier and little Timmy's bedroom-tier sets that nobody gave a shit about. I'd bet they're some of the most common out there, and plenty of literal boomers and early Gen Xers probably still have them in a closet, if not even still hooked up in the breakfast nook.

>> No.10599275

>>10599136
Professional models? Those are the first to break, burn in. or otherwise wither due to use because, well, they're used professionally.
As I said earlier, the number of CRTs in the wild does not dictate prices; that's geography and demand. When I say many have been broken, I also mean people, as you've said, have thrown many of them away for whatever reason. And you must ask yourself, given this population of surviving CRTs, how many are operational? How many are in a condition such that they'll be desirable at all?
At the end of the day, this amounts to whinging over prices, and it accomplishes nothing. You must understand that.

from what I've gleened scanning facebook marketplace. free stuff is always either fuckhuge or offbrand, I think it's fair to say that most people who bother with craigslist will take a cursory glance to see if they have anything worthwhile. if you're willing to pay 20$-40$ you can find some nicer stuff. the only models that go for $200 are unicorns.

>> No.10599342

A lot of the time you have to drive out to get CRT's as well even if they're free the gas to collect them and transport them isn't. It's not like you can carry a 27 home on the bus. And often I fix and calibrate them as well which takes time and sometimes costs money in materials such as capacitors/solder etc. So yeah, if people want to charge and people want to pay then why not? It doesn't have to be a fortune or a scalp but if it's reasonable there's no problem.

Yes, you should be responsible with your money. Yes, you should look for deals. Yes, you should wait and not buy the first thing you see. But you also sound foolish and without perspective acting like $100 is a large sum of cash. People in this hobby really do not understand how good they have it.
