I've played Hellbender and Forsaken, but I've never played the original. How the hell did people play this with a keyboard and only 2 hands?

Yeah it takes a while getting used to. I don't think I ever used the default controls, I remapped them so everything would be easier to reach. But even so it will take a while until it feels natural since you'll be needing both hands for maneuvering.

No idea honestly. I think the GOG version uses DOSBox, which has some limited gamepad support, but I don't own a PS5 controller so don't know about that specifically.

There's also these two source-port versions:

But I haven't tried them, and no idea if the controller would work with those either.
