Not terrible, but I didn't really enjoy it. I think there are better choices for Beat'em-Ups on the NES

I enjoyed playing the intellivision my grandmother had as a child.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons was especially fun, although confusing at the time.

I was gonna post in this thread, until I ended up sitting here for 4 minutes trying to figure out what my favorite game actually was, I gave up

>> No.1066515

Its pretty hard to decide. But I am gonna have to go with Chrono Trigger. Runner ups would have included Earth Bound, Phantasy Star IV, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Castlevania Bloodlines.

>> No.1066530

>>1066515
>Chrono Trigger
Always a fun RPG.
>Earth Bound
Beautiful game. One of the first that really made me think about my life

>Phantasy Star IV
I love phantasy star (and yes even 3) the only problem is that I wish they kept the first person dungeon.
>Sonic 3 & Knuckles
When my friend got the Sonic & Knuckles add-on my mind fucking blew. >Castlevania Bloodlines
Never played sadly

While I can't really think of a favorite game I would have to say Super Mario World. While I played NES games before playing Worlds it was the first game I truly ever owned and the first console game I ever beat. I still go back to it every few years and still enjoy it to death.

>> No.1066534

>>1066530
Yeah even I like Phantasy Star III as crazy as it sounds. I know it had its flaws but take the good like the multiple generations of main protagonists that adds to replay value, the multiple worlds and the awesome dungeon crawling music. And traversing these worlds isn't so bad once you get Wren's Aero parts.

I feel like they could remake it and build on its positives and make a truly fantastic game.

Yeah Super Mario World is amazing. That iconic and recognizable art style, that awesome music and those challenging levels.

>> No.1066538

Super Mario World is one of mankinds crowning achievements.

I have a lot of favorite games but one of them is Brave Fencer Musashi

I am really astounded, not so much at how large Chrono Trigger is, but how deep and well laid out the storyline is for a game on a 16 bit cartridge.

While I wouldn't say it's my favorite (not sure I have just one favorite) it is my most replayed probably. Helps I share a name with the protagonist so that's +1 in its favor.

>> No.1066740

Brave Fencer Mushashi is a fantastic game. It pioneered and improved upon so many things like the the 24 hour 7 day a week clock. The voice acting. The enemy ability stealing. Had it all been done before? Sure. Was it all combined into a wonderfully fun and lighthearted game that still had a decent challenge. Hell yes.

Its a great underappreciated game that should get more credit. Hell I even have the sequel on past I just never got around to playing it.

I can't really say that I understand why Square did the whole roman numeral thing the way they did. I understand that we never actually got II or III but to release VII in the US as VII and not IV, now that's confusing.

I can understand when they make a minor variation to a games title like with Bloodlines being released under the title "The New Generation" in Europe, because of their firm stand against blood and violence in games but releasing a game in a numerical order that just isn't so makes no sense to me.

That being said. I do love Final Fantasy IV, I prefer the [spoilers]PSP[/spoilers] port however because of the newly arranged sound track, updated high resolution graphics with new, more detailed sprites, and the ability to actually switch out party members near the end.

It was because by the mid 90s, we had become aware of Japanese games - I guess that was around the point they actually started to respect us at all as gamers.

Yeah in the early 90's, western gamers were pretty indifferent to the anime style of artwork and jrpg's. that gives the explanation as to why western cover art featured manly, high fantasy style artwork featuring characters in the same likeness as Conan, while Japan got their video game covers plastered with anime characters.

I can only imagine how many people were upset to find that buff manly dude wielding a claymore didn't actually appear in the game, but instead a blue haired petite young adult with feelings and emotions.

Doom is the only "greatest" retro game of all time

We each have our own great experiences, for example it was Ultima 4 and Zork 1 for me, but if you say that something other than Doom is the best retro game of all time you just aren't being objective or truthful with yourself.

I would also accept SF2 as "the best retro game of all time" but it wasn't as pervasive and as high quality as Doom.

It depends on what port you are referring to, because I found the SNES version to have delayed controls, but the PC version is pretty good. But still far from the best.

What would be the best port then?

But here goes mine: Thief (either one or two, they both have their merits, 2 probably has better level design though.)

Doom: 10/10 game there buddy. Good choice.

pretentious doom guy here, there were 3 games immediately above my post

I didn't rate the 3-screen car game because Ive never heard of it, that is not intended as an opinion

FF4 is my favorite of the series, because it came out when I was 15. I don't consider it a great 'game' however, certainly not when compared to other rpgs. I have never touched the "extended story" game since I already know how the story ended in my imagination. Cecil went evil again, Kain killed him but then realized he didn't care about Rosa, Edward mercifully got eaten by a large insect, Yang was a great king but his reign was uneventful, Rydia and Edge had magical ninja babies but she remained distant and outlived him by centuries due to trips to the land of summoners.

I'm not sure what you mean about SMB2USA, you mean the one with Wart and the plants? I played it a lot, but I hated the middle levels and skipped straight to the end via warp bottle.

>> No.1067294

You could at least rate the genre.

Or not post because your post would be off topic.

Or wait til a game comes up that you do recognize.

Or let people know that you haven't played it, so someone else can rate it. You know. Anything.

Or you could go try out the game and not post.
