Has there ever been a videogame mascot more embarrassing than Johnny Turbo?

Yeah yeah, you're about to post Sonic or Mario, very funny and original.

I mean, sure, there have been a lot of really really stupid videogame mascots. Or ones that are weird, creepy, lame, or just plain confusing, but in terms of just embarrassing for the company I can't think of one worse than this guy. They made comics that were basically a console war over statements they claimed SEGA said that they never did (Namely, that the SegaCD was the first CD based console and that SEGA tried to make it seem like you didn't need a Genesis to use a SegaCD, SEGA did neither of these) and the system itself didn't outlive the SegaCD in the US.

The character never even appeared in any games No, his meme appearance as a joke character in the 2019 game "Crystal Crisis" does not count and was more or less a mockery of one of their developers, Jonathan Brandstetter, whom they apparently didn't like and intentionally made the character as a mockery. Some argue the mascot actually hurt sales of the system ion the US even more than it already was struggling with.

Well... Lords of thunder released first on the turbo, I honestly don't know anything about the Sega CD port, only that it exists and some people like the soundtrack more than the original (it was probably ported because the Sega CD sold more than the Turbo CD/duo).
On the other hand, Mega Bomberman is a bad port of Bomberman 94 (the last one for the PC engine) and was only available in the US and Europe because the Turbo was already dead.
The TurboGrafx is pretty depressing.

Wow, that's pretty damn bad too.

Honestly, I think Johnny Turbo is still the more embarrassing one, even with the WW2 propaganda cartoon era racism in the Atari one. They at least tried to have an actual Superhero with the Atari comic, even if it's a clear ripoff of Superman. I was confused at first why the bad guys were Japanese until I noticed at the end of the first issue that the Atari 7800 was mentioned, I thought this was during the 2600 era and that the Japanese systems had not entered the US yet. The 7800 era was kinda late to go "We are the best! Nintendo sucks!", that's like the CD-I trying to mock the PS1.

Johnny Turbo though was literally just some fat dude with no powers who was such a PcEngine/TG16 fanboy that he made up a superhero costume and just started shooting people to go on a literal console war over claims that SEGA never even made. To say nothing that Atari was trying to be serious with their superhero/comic/mascot while Johnny Turbo was made to mock one of their programmers.

>>10590024
>but isn't impossible mission the game that was literally unwinnable

Well it's not called Possible Mission, they flat out told you on the cover it's impossible.

>>10590043
Johnny is not even close to the same league as Sanshiro. He had commercials, a game dedicated to him, has since appeared in crossover games, and even today is remembered. His SON has now appeared in commercials (although for Ramen, but they still play on the fact that his father was Sanshiro).

>>10590164
Gotta love how in the first comic starts with them talking about how their "Master Plan" is to... make people think their CD system was the first. HOW this is somehow a plan and just WHAT it would even accomplish is never brought up. At least that one has a small tinge of logic, to make money, even if it's pathetic amounts for what is apparently a massive evil organization.

sort of, but also a lot of the latter. unlike snes/genesis multiplats, the majority of genesis/pce multiplats were by separate developers and separated years apart

some of the more exceptionally far apart examples include truxton, forgotten worlds, strider, and bonanza bros, these all came out years later on pce

That would require effort. Not too hard to toss in a 3D model with a handful of animations that are just superfluous eye candy for a puzzle game.

A LOT more effort to create hundreds of HD sprites for a 2D fighting game character... even if it would make more sense to have a "superhero" with a gun in a fighting game instead of a featureless Issac or a girl riding a giant cat.
