I still remember when I bought this game back in 1997, I also remember getting ill and skipping school for a week and playing it nonstop.

It's a masterpiece, one of my favorite Treasure games for sure.

>> No.1058892

The shake mechanic was fun and it has some neat boss battles. I tried to replay this recently though and was disappointed at how blurry the sprites are. Ah, that's the N64 I guess.

I only got to rent it, like the N64 Goemon game, I wish I owned them both.

Believe it or not, I still have an old-ass Zenith CRT. The game plays well but it's pretty ugly, with muddy backgrounds and how so much of the stages are made from those Clancer blocks.

Kinda wish they had done something like Alien Soldier with a boss rush and maybe keeping some of the novelty stages like the missile riding.

It is a pity the game was so short, and it took around half of it for the game to start to get good.

I played Mischief Makers 2-3 years ago on a 32'' LCD TV and I was suprised to see that the graphics still look so appealing. On the other hand when I tried to play Guardian Heroes on XBLA with the original graphics I ended up playing with the HD filter. Sure, it makes it look like a flash game at first but at least it's not tiring for the eyes like with the original graphics which was a pixelated chaos.

I will post this in every MM thread:

Make DBZ combos on MM
>Throw enemy far away
>Dash+jump, catch mid-air
>Throw on the ground to bounce, grab again (repeat as many times as desired)
>Throw upwards
>Grab another enemy/block/jar
>Throw it to the falling enemy before hitting the ground

I used to do it with Teran too, but it was different since he doesn't grab things. I'd spend hours trying to come up with new combos in specific stages.

>> No.1060805

I remember getting all of the gold gems from the boss battles in the game. You weren't allowed to get hit at all. It was no problem except for Cerebus Alpha. That fucker took me forever.

Still a fun boss battle, though.

They broke that rule with Gunstar Heroes Advance and Sin and Punishment 2. GHA was not what people expected, but S&P2 is one hell of a sequel.
I'd really like to see a new Mischief Makers, it's incredible they didn't make one for the Wii, considering waggle would actually make a lot of sense.

>> No.1068990

I've read the interview back then, can't remember now why they did it, but anyway Gunstar Heroes Adv. was released before.

About MM, not sure, good question. Nintendo published it in America (and Europe?), Enix in Japan. However, Enix appears on the opening sequence of the american cart too (but after Nintendo)... I'd think Squeenix does, since they are the original publishers in Japan. it's just like how Dragon quest VI on DS was published by Nintendo in America, but is owned by Squeenix.

Image quality and processing power are a drop in the bucket compared to all the other aspects of visual design.

Those sprites are low resolution, but a lot of work and thought was put into. For modern 2D games the process has been so simplified they hardly even think of the end result.

Even the way the camera follows the screen is important. As a film Editor, I want to FUCKING STRANGLE whoever decided "Flashback Returns" should have a camera that follows your every fucking move instead of cutting from one screen to the next.
