I hate how Doom fans get so upset about console ports. I grew up playing Doom on the 3DO, which was supposedly the “worst” port. But I loved it and still play that version to this day.

When I had a SNES, I didn't even notice the slowdowns. Looked normal to me.

This was the first version of doom I played. Getting a little farther each time I played is a special memory.

It's a shockingly good port for what it's running on. The SNES was really punching above it's weight class. It's nobody's favorite version but if you only had an SNES you'd have a decent option.

That's not nostalgia, it's Stockholm syndrome.

It used the SFX2 chip that's way more capable than a stock SNES.

I remember renting it. It wasn't a huge amount different to the PC because my PC was shit anyway. It was noticeably different, but it wasn't terrible or anything. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I got to play the 2nd and 3rd episodes too because at the time I only ever had the shareware version on the PC

The best thing about Doom is the wad tools. Doom was big before but continued to grow long after. The best Doom is the sandbox game.

That's not really relevant. That's a native feature of cartridge consoles. It'd be like saying your desktop PC isn't "really" doing the work because you have a GPU installed. The expandability is the point, right down to larger ROM chips. A stock SNES does nothing but display a black screen until you plug something into it.

Finding out the SNES Doom supported Deathmatch via the X Band blew my fucking balls off, that's insane. Sadly my family didn't have internet until right after the X Band's lifetime, otherwise I would've begged my dad for one.

That is cool.

Funny how the E1M1 music sounds itself sounds laggy to match the laggy visuals. The instruments sound all out of time with each other due to the misused effects. It creates a sort of seasickness like feeling. I think if I tried to play this I would need to play with the music turned off.

>supposedly the worst port
Because it struggles to go above 10 frames per second most of the time. It's outright a hackjob which was pieced together in a ridiculous fucking hurry by a single person in the span of 10 weeks, and he'll tell you himself that it's a bad port.

>>10585526
That's the good part of the 3DO port. The chucklefuck who initially arranged the 'project' to port Doom to the 3DO turned out to be a pretty decent musician, so he could at least make that contribution (since the 3DO port was based on the Jaguar port, and lacked much of the code for the music). A few years ago he was also put on trial for touching kids, but that's another story.

Anyway, it would be really easy to use the 3DO soundtrack with a PC sourceport.

More like just accepted it. Always liked Goldeneye, but every now and then, the times when Goldeneye dropped frames a lot, I'd wish that it didn't.
Doesn't ruin the game, but when there's a lot of explosions and smoke it's a bit obnoxious because it's harder to roll with the punches.

>>10585471
That's really only so much help, it's still very anemic hardware for a game like this, hence why the port is so impressive. It's still rough too, but it's ultimately playable, and there wasn't exactly much else on the SNES like it.
