Ffvii every fucking time. Better mechanics, chocobos, better secrets, better character archs, better story, better music, better world to explore, better vehicles, it's better just in every way. But it should be compared to chrono cross, not trigger. Ffvi should be compared to chrono trigger, and In that case everything I said about ffvii holds true for ffvi vs chrono trigger.

FFVII by a reasonable margin. The feels I get playing 7, even as a 35yo are intense. This sounds fucked but playing FF7 has been one of the best parts of my whole life. It's a really pleasant revenge fantasy.

FF7 by a wide margin.
Don't get me wrong, CT is a great game, but it has an entirely different goal and design philosophy from FF7.
CT has great execution and pacing with few/no flaws, but it's not very deep. Bland characters with little development and a basic plot. 7 on the other hand goes all in. great plot, amazing characters with tons of depth, development and interaction, awesome music, great aesthetic and style, and fast, flashy and satisfying combat. 7 has it all.

Well JRPG bros... I think I'm one more step to officially throwing in the towel. Got halfway through FF8, loved the setting, most of the characters, ost, setting, the SOULFUL backgrounds... and like with every other JRPG I try without action elements, the gameplay became tedious. I don't get how DQXI managed to avoid this, but it's so aggravating to love so many elements of JRPG's but get bored to tears with the gameplay. I will always envy those of you that can into that element.

I think I'll make Breath of Fire 3 the final hill I die on. I just wish I could understand why I loved DQXI so much and yet can never get into the gameplay of any other JRPG.

I'm just so annoyed with it. To love every single aspect of a type of game... except the actual gameplay. I get about halfway through each JRPG I attempt and eventually I just dread each encounter and only push through them to see more of the game and story. Also, after some thinking on it, I think the auto battle, and ability to fast forward might have been a big reason why I liked and finished DQXI, which is kinda sad.

That's a very fair criticism. The biggest problem with many jrpgs especially is that by mid game you're strong enough that most random encounters have no challenge to them at all, so all it's doing is wasting your time. I used to really like rpgs but over the years got bored with them.

If there's a game I would recommend it's Lunar Eternal Blue original on Sega CD. It stuck in my mind as one of the greats over the years and replaying it now it holds up in ways many other since haven't. There's never a spot you need to stop and grind but it remains challenging all through and you have to pay attention to things like enemy positions, who will act first and what skills to use when.

I do not recommend the PS1 version in any way. For one, the balance I spoke of is completely gone and it's piss easy. Besides that it is just overall one of if not the worst remakes of a game ever. Sega CD is easy to emulate so go that rout or stick with BoF3, which is not a game I love but it's way better than the Lunar remakes.

Ohh I know. I remember well Nick Rox whining on message boards that he couldn't get past Borgan in the US version which is why you don't see anything past that in his Gamefan review. The up in difficulty is one of the few changes Vic made that I really agree with. I held the game up as having near perfect balance for years and now replaying it if anything it's better than I remember.

Regardless, the remake is awful in all sorts of other ways. Dungeons being severly shortened or changed. Illusion Woods being a perfect example I've brought up here so many times. The original is an awesome sprawling dungeon where trees have hidden passages that lead to underground tunnels connecting to different parts of the forest. In the remake all that is replaced by a tiny hedge maze that doesn't even look like a forest and has no illusory doors hidden in trees. A dude just moves a bush out of the way for you.

The entire remake is like that, lazy and shitty everywhere. In the original there are all kinds of little touches and details, like doors having an animation when they open and bars in towns having their own music. Missing or chopped down cut scenes... All gone. It really is one of if not the absolute worst remake of a game there has ever been.

Because they are console gens apart, ffvi is not, ffvi is more closer in aesthetics and mechanics, ffvi is also more closer in terms of advertisement and hype. Ffvii is 3d not a 2d game, ffvii has 3d cinematics and gameplay. The only thing comparable about ffvii and ct is that they are both jrpgs. Chrono trigger is better compared to something in its lane like smrpg, as even ffvi outclasses it in most cases. I'm not stopping anybody from comparing ffvii and ct, but it's not a good match up. NTA, but I'm almost done with Saga Frontier 2 myself, filtered me as a kid, way easier as an adult while also using a chronological list of events/missions so the story makes sense now. Impressed with how it seems to be your everyday magical fantasy, but it's actually sci-fi the deeper you go. Also how easily they kill off even major characters, not gonna say which (spoilers and all that), but damn there's some brutal Game of Thrones shit happening. I'll finish it this time, final boss is going to be a bitch and I already know it, but worst case scenario - GameShark. Screw it. I will have to say however that I'm playing at x2 speed during battles using an emulator's fast toggle and fuck me would the battles take ages otherwise. That's a massive problem with jRPGs in general I think, long ass battles. Way better if you can just toggle the speed up a notch.

I decided to keep going with 8 but delving deep into the character building and finding the broken spell combinations and that's finally making the combat fun. I remember hating playing DnD with my friends, but they all loved my acting/characters so I kept doing it for them, but one friend caught on and showed me how a big part of the fun comes from the skills and finding broken combinations/countering enemies and now that I'm on disc 3, FF8 reminds me a lot of that too so I wonder if I just oversimplified RPG'S into the most basic aspects of the combat and just getting through it rather than learning how to have fun breaking it and countering enemies. (Squall and Rinoa definitely deserve each other)
