I've been using ZSNES for... well, years now, I guess.

Are there any other SNES emulators that are considered superior? What does /vr/ use?

>> No.1058014

There's a link to the emulation wiki in the board's sticky. Check it, it's really, really useful.

I use Higan.

i use bsnes, but on low-tier setups it can be slow.

Just download RetroArch. It has bsnes and snes9x cores, as well as cores for practically every other system you can think of, and it can update itself so you'll never have to worry about downloading newer versions of emulators ever again.

Just remember to change the audio settings to xaudio2 so you won't have any sound crackling issues

I still use ZSNES 1.36. IT JUST WERKS.

Someone's making an emulator with ZSNES UI and SNES9x' emulation engine, so I might switch to that when it's done.

My fucking nigger.

Snes9x is the best general-purpose SNES emulator (i.e. works "fine" on basically everyone's machine).

You should really be using bsnes if you can, though.

/vr/ doesn't like ZSNES because it is not "accurate". So it depends on how much of a purist you are. ZSNES was made to just reproduce the SNES output without really caring about how close to the console that is achieved. Its biggest problem is that is hasn't been updated in a long time anymore. An example of a flaw is that it can't show transparency properly.
I see that pragmatic: Changing then when a game is not emulated properly, otherwise I don't give a fuck.

Second question:
EVERY OTHER emulator is considered superior. SNES9x should be sufficient for your needs. the other ones are just needed if you really want to be as close to the original as possible

>> No.1067602

I download zmz because everyone said zsnes was shit but I like the interface. Unfortunately I get crackling audio and can't figure out what to do.

Don't listen to these hipster faggots op, ZSNES is a damn fine emulator. The core is written in mostly x86 assembly, for you non-programmers that means shit is wicked fast.

People will say it's not as accurate, but given that that means it doesn't always push virtual electrons at the full 59.9Hz, whatever. It never affects the framerate or gameplay.

ZSNES also has features that other emulators don't have, like fully compatible save states, rewind, netplay, and full multitap support.

TL;DR, hates gunna hate.

>> No.1068205

>>1057994
higan/bsnes uses some bullshit rom setup system; just configuring it up so it works the way I like it would take longer than the amount of time I play SNES games a year (given that all the SNES games I care about have gba or ds). Zsnes I already have set up and it just werks for the occasional use.

Accuracy is cool, but none of the games I play are really affected by it, and Byuu is way too much of a smug bastard about keeping things super accurate for me to care. I fully acknowledge that his emulator is better and that his work on it is super important though, I'm just not affected by it in any way.

>> No.1068232

>>1068205
So Byuu is an asshole for making sure that his emulator actually, you know, emulates properly?

>> No.1068243

>>1058405

I tried RetroArch. It seems to not come with any of these all-important cores? I see that I can download source code for the bSNES core. Is there a way I can just get a pre-built package of this stuff (for Windows), and maaaaybe even some kind of simple explanation of how to configure and run the thing? I'm a programmer, I can build from source, but see I'm here to play games, and since I'm not autistic I don't experience Linux as a game. Any help or should I just go back to ZSNES, the neurotypical's emulator?

>> No.1068269

>>1068232

Requiring that you put every ROM file in its own directory or whatever, and that you use a SFC file rather than an SMC file, has nothing to do with accuracy of emulation. An SMC file in a random directory can be emulated with perfect accuracy. Unless I'm wrong. I haven't written any emulators after all.

He's not necessarily an asshole though. He might just be unconscious of how stupid things like that seem to an ordinary person who just wants to play some games. If his thing weren't free then he'd find out soon enough, but it's free to use and seems to mostly lack competition, so it's also free to suck (in every way that doesn't involve accuracy).

>> No.1068296

>>1068243

Oh okay according to the wiki in the /vr/ sticky you are supposed to use the "phoenix" version of the RetroArch executable. Which I can't do because it crashes as soon as I run it. Well, they're only on version 0.9.9; I can't expect the program to actually run or anything. That's conventionally not covered until the 0.9.9.94 release, according to my understanding. ALL RIGHT welcome back into my heart lovely ZSNES.

To be honest I don't like playing /vr/ on touchscreens. It just feels so clunky. But there's people that get used to it.

Turn-based RPGs would be good, since you don't need to be moving all the time in those. But fighting games, action RPGs and platformers sound really hard to control.

Not sure I'd say it's superior, but snes9x has been nice to me over the years.

Really, if zsnes works for you, why change up? It plays the games, that's all that matters.

>> No.1069042

>>1068828
in my experience on this board, if it's not the MUH ORIGINAL HARDWARE argument, it's an inferiority complex that has to be bolstered up by saying things like
>bSNES/Higan/9x/RetroArch/etc is clearly superior and the only truly accurate option for emulation
>anything but (insert the emulator you're talking about using) is an acceptable form of emulation

saying things like "it plays the games, that's all that matters" allows for there to be options for different people depending on their needs/desires, and such a concept is not acceptable here.

In the latest version of higan, you don't need to convert anything yourself. All your .smc and .zip games will work just fine. Just go to Library -> Load, select your game, and play. Never have to worry about folders or .sfc or anything like that again.

>> No.1070108

bsnes is the most acurate, but SNES9X has filters and turbo buttons and shit which bsnes doesn't have.

>> No.1070126

Retroarch using bsnes core with crt-geom shader and ntsc-svideo filter custom set to your tastes.

Best accuracy, and you can get that filter + shader combo to be minimally intrusive, just enough to give the feel of a real SNES hooked up to a tv, with out going full retard mode (extremely curved screen, 100% scanlines, over the top dithering, etc. That shit hurts to look at.)

Seriously, this is the most satisfying way to play.
