CS has kept up with the times, 1.6 has fallen out of competitive relevance compared to CS2. It seems the base of CS has a timeless appeal.

The last time I played 1.6 (last Summer) I was on a server with a decent map rotation with a friend and everyone around me was talking about getting checked up at the doctor, their fathers' cancer treatments, how a friend had a stroke. Funny, playing CS2 I feel old, but around those guys I was still young.

UT2K4 is a poor man's Q3 because everything you mentioned is meaningless fluff. The actual mechanics of the game are garbage. There's a reason Q3 has had a competitive presence for over 20 years, meanwhile UT2K4 has been all but forgotten. It isn't as cerebral as Q3. The maps are not designed with the same sensibilities. It isn't fast and brutal, the physics sucks, movement is sluggish and floaty, the weapons are impotent. Q3 is a more refined and streamlined game.

I also think it's funny that any time a 2K4 faggot tries to defend this game, they list off all this quantitative bullshit while purposely neglecting everything Q3 provides with Team Arena. Outside of vehicles and a campaign (which is BS anyway because we both know UT2K4 """campaign""" is bot match just like Q3 and every other arena shooter), Q3/TA has everything UT2K4 has and more. Extra weapons, tons of game modes, gigantic maps with bases etc, team powerups, all sorts of modifiers, even "mutators" exist in the form of console commands that let you do shit like lower gravity, fly, increase running speed, spawn bots of different skill levels mid-game, and tons of other stuff. Bizarrr you'd even bring up mods since the modding scene for Q3 is so much bigger it isn't funny.

Q3 has it all. It has the quality, and the quantity. UT2K4 is a slow, casual game with peashooter weapons and no substance. It doesn't hold a fucking candle to Q3.

Must have been in Europe? I tried to play CS 1.6 a few years ago in NA, and there were absolutely no servers left to play on, other than SA servers that run 24/7 dust2, infinite money, and are just so bogged down with mods that flashbangs didnt work

Nobody cared about the tired old game modes by 2004 for a reason. Collectathon "deathmatch" with Q3's soulless peashooter weapons (nice job projecting, Q3's weapons are dogshit feeling compared to 1 and 2) isn't any fun. Really sad to watch, the hostile attitude and inferiority complex of quakeniggers. A grim fate of getting mogged by their immediate predecessor (Doom) and a following rival (UT).

Yeah, Q3 is basically the perfect multiplayer FPS. If you disagree, you haven't played enough to fully grasp the mechanics.

Strafe jumping allows good players to hugely increase their speed, and it isn't easy. You also have to balance it with aiming and air control.

The weapons also aren't in "tiers" like other FPS games. The shotgun is best in many situations. Plasma is best in corridors for high DPS. Rocket launcher is good at short-medium to medium range. Lightning gun is best at short to short-medium range. Nothing is the "best."

Not only that, but you need to time powerups and route the map. And for every engagement, you need to consider your powerup stack, what you think your opponent has, the weapons you have and the best ranges, and the weapons they have and the range they want to engage in.

It's surprisingly complex once you start implementing all these mechanics.

Bingo. What Quake 3 nails are the mechanics. The feeling of movement is fluid, the weapons all perfectly complement one another, and the maps are designed to reward speed, reflex, movement, timing and deep knowledge of how various areas of the environment are linked. There is no FPS ever made that is as "perfect" in its systems as Q3A. If you want to experience the absolute best of competitive shooting, this is it.
