10576634 No.10576634 [Reply] [Original]

Imagine the sheer disappointment when this came out after the first Metroid. Clunkier, terrible music, no level design to speak of, and completely lacks in soul. Seriously why did they not do a full on 8 bit one, when the first was a huge seller?

Metroid 2 was, is, and will continue to be well regarded and you will continue to be a dumb faggot.
It's better than Metroid 1 because the small areas, linearity, and relative lack of identical repeating corridors mean the absence of an in-game map is not a huge con like it is in the first game.

Metroid 1 is so bad gameplay-wise it's only thanks to surrounding merchandise that it got a sequel. And it was rightfully curbstomped in every aspect by this monochrome game boy title.

>> No.10576835

You may have a point about the claustrophobic atmosphere, but this isn't intentional and is only due to the smaller screen of the gameboy.

>> No.10576837

>>10576835
Are you sure? The music seems to me they knew they were working with a small screen and used it to their advantage. Also the fact every Metroid fight is effectively a jumpscare.

>> No.10576838

>>10576808
Agreed. More metroidvanias should have no map, relying solely on checkpoints, memory, and in-game directions. Maybe even the ability to draw your own map. As a matter of fact this should apply to open world games as well.

That was the appeal OP, no one expected a Gameboy game to be a 1:1 with a Nintendo game in 1991. You're retarded and should be ashamed of publicizing your opinions.

Doing a deep dive into it right now. I may have to give it another chance. One thing I like about it is that is has soul due to the more claustrophobic screen.

Metroid has always been one of the more overrated series. SM on the SNES was good but anything before or after has been forgettable. I used to have Prime on GC and it was so boring. It was basically a 'one-classic wonder' franchise.

Yup. We were blown away by how deep it was for a game boy game.

and as for
>why did they not do a full on 8 bit one
Because they'd already did one on the NES, were planning an eventual sequel on the NES' successor that was going to be the big technological leap and in the meantime they wanted to sell more Game Boys

the spider ball was pretty memorable

>> No.10578965

>this isn't intentional
Irrelevant in my opinion. So much good shit of old games came about due to compromises, technical limitations and just unintended jank. Super Metroid's sound design, that really elevates it's atmosphere, could not be repliacted today due to higher quality audio.

>> No.10578976

>>10576634
It was disappointing to me because of the reasons you said, but it was actually a popular and well regarded game. But, the original game wasn't an especially huge seller. Also to note, Metroid 2 had plenty of soul and introduced some Super Metroid elements.

>> No.10578981

Having beat it for the first time last month I think it's a great game.
If I had gone from Metroid to Metroid II I think I would have seen it as an improvement in every way, except the loss of color.
>clunkier
This is how you know OP is shitposting. Metroid II added the ability to aim down while jumping, spring ball, spider ball, and space jump, which are all objective improvements to Samus' moveset.
>terrible music
Subjective complaint. Music is interesting and nowhere near as grating as in the first game. Yea the first game has iconic melodies but they're on short loops throughout massive areas. II is more horror focused and moody.
>no level design
Also a shitpost. Each zone is very well laid out and leans into the philosophy of leading a player to an upgrade that opens up exploration of the area: the design philosophy that basically characterizes a Metroid game.
>"lacks in soul"
It might be the most soulful entry in the Metroid series.

>Be a real person living when the game boy came out and not a hallucination made by OP
>Wow I'm glad I have this game to play on car rides in order to have fun instead of staring out the window
>Decades later some sperg who played the game in passing will lecture the world on how everyone in the 90s shared his 2024 opinion.

You could have just said "I don't like this game and therefor it is bad." and you would have been less retarded. At least you would be acknowledging you are talking about your opinion instead of doing a really shitty attempt at trying to falsify history. You could have even said "When this game came out everyone hated it and went to nintendo HQ and took a dump in the parking lot in protest" and it would also be an attempt to falsify history, one just as obvious, but it would at least be funny.

I played 2 first and found 1 extremely disappointing. Samus looks fucking stupid, runs like a spastic, can't even shoot across the screen without a powerup, the colors are all garish, the music grating and the bosses boring and lame.
