What's the worst port of a good game?

Hard mode: No games that are in name only and play entirely different.

Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra.
The Snes port is not only slow and clunky, but teeming with glitches and poor design choices.
Some of the worst include:
The maximum party size being reduced to six AND the number of items you can carry has been reduced from 18 to 14.

Worse yet, items can only be traded among party members with the "discard" command. Each time you must decline to permanently discard the item and only then can you transfer it, one item at a time!

That last one is especially problematic because the system will not allow you to "discard" key items. This means any plot item a character picks up becomes a PERMANENT part of their inventory! The same limited inventory used for their equipment!

Personality stat gains from items are glitched too. Instead of raising Personality, they increase Intelligence instead. The seriously handicaps Clerics and Paladins.

Speaking of Clerics, the "Raise Dead" spell is supposed to lower Endurance by one point. Due to a bug, it instead reduces Endurance down to just one point (HOLY SHIT!)

AFAIK, these and several more bugs and faults only appear in the Snes port. Such a pisspoor effort, I can only wonder why they even bothered.

This shit. Wow, it's a beat em up called Bad Dudes so it must be 2 players, right? Nope. Would have forgot about this game entirely if not for the amazing intro cutscene, because the game play is garbage and it's a single player console beat em up. Well, I think it might have been 2 player but not co op, changing turns on death. Then like over a decade later I download a mame romset and I'm looking through it and I see none other than Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja. Could it possibly be the same Bad Dudes(well Dude, because only one of them os on screen at a time) that needed to rescue the president? It actually is, to mu surprise the NES game was a port. So I fire it up. Wow, it's not terrible. It's decent, a little repetitive but sounds and looks pretty good for what I'm guessing is late 80s. Not incredibly hard or unfair. Bad Dudes on the nes was one of my first beat em ups and it almost turned me off of the style. The NES version isn't inherently bad, it's just boring and the difficulty feels cheap, and everything looks and sounds like shit.

As a programmer, it sounds to me like it was random placeholder text he was using while experimenting with different aspects of the game. "Boy Love" was testing out the text cipher and the bible verse (one of them, at least) was testing an alternate text display method.

Most likely using "Boy" and "Love" because he needed an eight character word containing a space, so he just put down the first three and four letter words that popped into his head. (I've used things like "four" and "knife" when I needed a random word, just because they happened to pop into my head when I needed them)

>> No.10585567

>>10585425
that's quite a stretch, even ignoring the words themselves, why would placeholder text be accessible behind two cheat codes and a cipher not used anywhere else in the game?
the bible verses could be argued like that, considering they're just in the rom but no longer connected to anything (the tcrf page explains how they would be displayed, but the code around them was changed so they no longer "work", which is different to this boy love text)
not to say it's impossible though, taking into account it shows up as a skill level, maybe they planned on a secret skill level which was never completed (the game itself is very unfinished), though i don't know why a secret skill level would need obfuscation in the rom
the tcrf page doesn't say if that "skill level" actually changes gameplay at all, though it would not be very useful information considering the unfinished nature of the game

>TED CAMERON
It looks like the developer was trying to hide a friend's name in the game as an Easter Egg and was playing around with different methods to do it. BOY LOVE was probably testing whether he could hide text in the game without it being noticed by other developers (which explains why it's such a strange phrase, since he'd want someone to ask about it if they found it). Ultimately it looks like he settled for just typing it into an unused line of code.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (SMS/SGG)
It's an 8-Bit port of an originally 16-Bit title, so it has a lot to prove from the get go... and it fails at it so miserably. It controls well and looks good if you take the hardware into account, it's got quite a similar structure and bosses to the original, so I thought it all looked good! However when I really got into it and realized how awful both the level design and enemy behavior was... it just sucked.

I think what really kills this one is that there are no lives, nor continues, you have a single health bar, that you can refill by resting at home, which will take time off from your real time 24minutes timer, it's a short experience, but a terrible one, also the Symbiote/Venom suit being locked to its hardest difficulty setting, appropriately called "Nightmare" mode, is downright sadistic aswell.

Wasn't this port so bad that EGM gave it complete zero ratings, whereas their lowest-rated game prior was Superman 64?

DK was by Coleco, and yeah, it was shut to make the Colecovision look better. Pac-Man, however, was all Atari, and came out shit because it was rushed and they cheaped out by not using a bigger cart size.

ah no DK sucked for the same reason--Coleco only wanted to pay for a 4k cartridge. the programmer said that was what happened.

>MK3
>Good
Yeah no. It was objectively the worst in the series with some of the most awful finishers and lazy character designs. The combo mechanic was certainly nice but it's the finishers that really make or break a good MK game. MK2 was the absolute peak of the original trilogy. Somehow MK4 though gets shit on despite being the best aspects of MK3 and MK2, while MK3 gets all the praise.

On the topic of Spider-Man, we had Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six on NES, which was just fine, but nothing great, and it got ports on SEGA Master System and Game Gear. It should've been either better, or at least on par, they had quite a superior hardware afterall, but enemy behavior, or lack of, and also bosses AI and behavior, made it way more frustrating, the jumpkick sucked too.

I played the PS1 version and that was bad enough. What makes the Saturn version worse than PS1 (or 3DO, for that matter)?

>> No.10593081

>>10593067
PS1 bad? Only if you don't like the music. Since the Saturn is forced to a wide resolution, the game has borders and the main gameplay looks off. Also there are more slowdowns that the PS1 didn't have. At least the movies aren't choppy (the PS1 FMV has framerate issues for some reason, as the extracted files play normally). Also the 3DO one was cancelled.

Grand Theft Auto for the gameboy color, it's not even that I think the port would be terrible if it weren't for the lack of inputs on the gameboy or the small screen with basically same field of view. If you haven't played an actual gbc that's not front lit in a while you might not appreciate how hard it can be to track small objects on the screen, and on foot you and your enemies are all small objects.

Add to that the butchering that was Captain America and the Avengers by Realtime Associates, what a poor job they did. And on the other side, there is that awful World Heroes port for Genesis made by a western SEGA branch.

This is where I learned that PC ports can be different from console ports. I still beat the fucking game, because I had nothing else to play.
