I feel like I missed out on the PS2. I was in love with the PS1 throughout my childhood, and I played pretty much every notable game for it, even if it was just by the demo disc or a Blockbuster rental.

I got a PS2 for christmas one year, and I was in love with it too for maybe the first year or so; but it was also around that time one of my friends showed me stuff like Unreal Tournament and Red Alert 2 on PC. I was instantly converted, I moved on and forever became a PC gamer.

I regret it, Anons. I remember how excited I was to open that box up on Christmas day, I played Jak and Daxter and Red Faction for weeks when they were the only games I had for it. But I know this system had so many great games, and I only ever experienced a handful.

So I am going to make it right. I want to know, Anon- What were YOUR favourite PS2 game(s)? I don't just want the games from internet Top 10 lists, I don't care what MetalJesus thinks are "hidden gems"; I just want to know what games YOU loved the most, for whatever reason.

Why can't you people just enjoy your consoles? Why do you have to come on the internet to say how bad the other ones are?

I think you might just feel bitter that you missed out on the system too. Maybe you should listen to the games other Anons recommend, there's nothing stopping you trying them out now you are a grown up and these games are all freely and easily available.

You should at least elaborate on why you think it is "stale" and what aspects of the games made you feel that way.

That's all your arguments ever are, from your camp. "Numbers! Statistics! Inevitability!" But games aren't numbers. Enjoyment aren't numbers. Every time I explore the PS1 library I find more and more delightful and enjoyable surprises that are experimental and original in nature, on top of being fun and engaging at the expense of almost nothing. Everything is uniquely itself with nothing to prove or to conform to. Yet the more and more I revisit the PS2, I realize more and more of the games I used to gawk at are actually shallow experiences and are more just shoveled on there to get a product on the shelves and stay within the newly formed lane of black/brown/gray "cinematic" games that all wear the same sheen of dreariness and obligation. There are exceptions on the 2, but the amount of things that the library got right in 1 is astounding, when it was something I previously dismissed. Meanwhile, my once adoration for 2 continues to subside into "well, I guess," with the number of exceptions dwindling. Thousands of acceptably mediocre titles don't outweigh hundreds of great and dazzling ones to me, often with entries from within the very same franchise.

But that's just me. I used to be part of the PS2 hype years ago. Now I've come to find its taste ever blander as time goes on, though those exceptions do exist, I can no longer agree that it's the rule everybody says it is.

I don't know how well they hold up in 2024, but I remember loving the Thrillville games. Basically imagine Rollercoaster Tycoon, but along wit building and managing the park, you get to actually play the games you build, train staff through minigames, do quests, etc.

We are interested in the good games here, it literally doesn't matter at all how many bad games there were. You can safely ignore them. Every single console ever released has way more garbage than it does good stuff. That's why OP is even asking.

It didn't. The hype did. People calling it the best thing ever, untouchable, for 20 years, really did a number on it. There's that word again. Number. The sales number. The game numbers. That's all anyone points to. If everything were the same but it had a few less games and didn't sell 150 million, so it's on comparable footing with everything else, there'd be no reason for the praise to get that out of hand.

Didn't even mention bad games. Just the ethos of the whole library is painted in one or two broad strokes that loses its appeal rapidly, rather than having actual variety and individuality.

Hell yeah man, I feel like the PS2's been there every step of the way thru my growth as a gamer. We got mine the year it came out when I was just 8 years old, Tony Hawk games were all the buzz and SSX was the snowboarding heir apparent and it carried me into my teens with RPGs like FFX, action games like DMC.

Flipnic ultimate pinball, a game by sony themselves that has these multi-dimensional pinball levels, various tables built up with mechanics constantly changing, in one level you'll be blasting apart aliens with a laser while pinning back and forth, in another you'll be playing roulette wheels with a shitheaded monkey behind a waterfall. It's like the punctuation to the concept of pinball, a great time. SCE made it themselves and it has all the beauty you'd want from a first party game and shows a real love for the genre from clearly passionate people.

Next would be Firefighter FD18 which I've always heard about and even remember seeing way back on G4 20~ years ago. It's a slow paced third person shooter where you trudge through burning buildings and fires to rescue all kinds of people, collect items and defeat the fires. The best thing is the fires are all presented as types of monsters which makes them all really fun to fight. The story is another fun one too where the guy you play has clearly hates the news media, the game itself feels like it translates all the concepts laid out by the old Human Entertainment SNES game "The Firemen" to 3D despite as far as I can tell, sharing no staff.

Lastly would be Sky Odyssey which is an awesome adventure in simple planes in forgotten lands. The way it makes gameplay scenarios out of all these concepts from dumping all your fuel for more altitude to having your engine explode and having to use the lift in your wings to carefully navigate down a ravine makes it a totally unique and fun experience.

With the PS2 there's something for everyone and there's always more to uncover too, it's super rewarding.

It's one of those games that doesn't get boring no matter how many times you play it because there's so many different ways to play.
If you sneak up on monkeys it's a really fun stealth game.
If you charge at them net in hand it's a great, challenging action game.
If you use the power-up costumes and the giant robots it's a power fantasy.
If you want a real challenge there's a well-implemented time trial mode that's fun to speedrun.
If you want to play something totally different there's piles of minigames and other things to do.
If you're a lolicon it's a must-play because it's got the cutest sexiest most erotic loli ever in it holy shit she's so hot

I think the problem with the PS2 from a "retro2 perspective, is that while it had a lot of great games, most of them are still pretty well remembered today. The best stuff from the PS2 has pretty reliably been ported and re-released over the years onto PC or modern systems, so even if you think you m missed out on it at the time, whenever you try to dig into the PS2 library you just come across a lot of games you have very likely already played in one form or another.

It's ironic really, because I was never a fanboy of any one particular system, and I never liked the idea of console exclusives, but over time, those exclusives become the only genuine reason to revisit an old console. If you can plsy the same games natively on modern hardware, why bother?

This is why the 360/PS4/ and onwards will likely never matter as a "retro" system no matter how old they get. Pretty much every title of note is out on Steam or GoG etc anyway. The software has transcended the platform.

Sly Cooper (aka Sly Raccoon) is also a great and very unique stealth/action platformer with a very cool visual style and presentation (as long as you don't hate furry stuff, because it is peak furry.)

It had those shooting sections and the atmosphere scenery of war in the late 20th century in an urban landscape, and had aplenty of impressive loading screen with shit ton of bullets flying around (wich in on itself is a commentary on how many bullets are wasted in our contemporaries) and even includes the option for stealth and granades. Anyway, best PS2 games in no particular odour:
1) God of War 1 and 2 (best hack and slash action adventures, better than any of the Devil May Cry capcom trash)
2) GTA Vice City (best soundtrack & style in the entire franchise, although 'Scarface The World Is Yours' gave a solid try)
3) TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect (best arcadey first person shooters on the console, like improved versions of Goldeneye & Perfect Dark)
4) Resident Evil 4 (the best survival horror by default, but Cold Fear is a decent alternative)
5) Tekken 5 (best 3D fighting game in terms of combos, gameplay, graphics, & stage designs)
6) Beat Down Fists of Vengeance (completely underrated/overlooked open-world beat-em-up & even more fun than the repetitive Godhand)
7) Beyond Good & Evil (solid action game about some lesbo taking photos to fight some evil bad guys...it's a lot more interesting when you play it than reading about it)
8) Prince of Persia Warrior Within (the best in the entire trilogy...great combination of fun time-warping platforming, blood pumping metal soundtrack & sex appeal)
9) King of Fighters Orochi Collection (the ultimate 2d fighting game experience since it has a bunch of the old classic 90s KOF games)
10) Burnout 3 Takedown (this was the golden standard of arcadey street racing for the 2000s era)
11) Sniper Elite (one of the best 'sniper' shooters of all time...they made a bunch of sequels later on for the PS3 or something but the OG was all about WW2-era headshot goodness)
12) Sly 2 (the best in the action platforming/stealth mascot series....1 and 3 were okay but the 2nd one perfected it)
13) Fight Night Round 3 (probably the best boxing game you can get on PS2)

I really want to like Black, it has really satisfying, punchy guns and just overall it's always fun to see those really polished games that come out late in a console's cycle and push it to the limits. But when I try to play it today, I find it has unbearably sluggish controls. It's not input lag, because shooting responds instantly, but aiming and movement has like a full half second delay between input and response.

In general though I think it would have been an amazing game if it came out about 3 years earlier. But by 2006 it was already getting mogged by PC and 7th gen shooters. Call of Duty 4 came out like 6 months later and PS2 itself already had games like Killzone, which I think has actually aged better. Black just never had a time to shine.

Having said that, some standout PS2 games of mine are:

Dragonball Budokai Series
Star Wars Battlefront Series
LotR RotK and Third Age (Yeah Third age was unfinished but I loved it anyway)
Crash Twinsanity (ditto)
Burnout 3
Shadow of the Colossus
Tekken 5
James Bond: Agent Under Fire

Looking back, the quality of these is a mixed bag. But all these games give me comfy vibes of Saturday nights in my room under a blanket with a few sodas.

I missed out too anon.

Right when the PS2 came out I got into the house party scene in high school and my weekends turned into drug and alcohol fuelled adventures primarily revolving around meeting girls to have sex with.

I think Vice City and NFS Underground would be the only games I actually played during that time.

I was in a stable relationship when the PS3 came out and got to experience that generation to the fullest though :)

One thing I always thought was weird about the PS2 is how many of the biggest blockbuster franchises from the PS1 days all kind of fell apart when they made the transition.

There's plenty that made the transition successfully, like MGS, Gran Turismo, GTA, but it feels like the console had a lot of its potential squandered when so many of the most beloved series like Tomb Raider, Crash, Spyro, Wipeout, etc all kind of crashed and burned.

And there were a lot of good series that simply never made the jump. Stuff like Syphon Filter, MediEvIl, G-Police... It makes me sad games like those got left behind.

Ya ps2 was an absolute shredder for many franchises. I believe its due to the fact that the PS2 was much more difficult to develop for and the fact studios feel they had to up the ante for the new gen which did nothing but detract from what made many franchises good.

I just got a ps2 and softmodded it and I'm combing through the library and I'm not finding it hyped as everyone says. Tons of the 90+ rated titles are just overhyped sports, dudebro or wigger games that weren't particularly groundbreaking or innovative. I feel like it was a middle ground where the industry was still creative and striving but was also starting to fall into bad habits of over hype and IP whoring and movie games that really started to become evident with 7th gen.

rpgs, puzzle games maybe, where your inputs don't need to be exact or timed. you should get a controller though, any pos that works is better than a keyboard. i use a wired 360 which covers most things but there is a few games that use analog controls that the 360 controller lacks for face buttons which can be tricky.

"get it to work on the console" Let's just agree to disagree here. You don't understand what I'm telling you. You can't compare storage size to capability. Go look at the sonic games. Something that simple shouldn't be running at 30ish fps on the ps2 but they just do.

I feel the same too. Since I quit video games around the time the Dreamcast run ended, I feel like I missed out on a lot of PS2 games. There were still some standout games I enjoyed on the system, but the magic wasn't really there for it. I did spend the most time on the PS2 with games like Klonoa 2, Victorious Boxers, Skygunner, Capcom Vs. SNK 2, Culdcept Second, Shadow Hearts, Silent Hill 2+3, Rumble Roses, Metal Gear Solid 2+3, Flipnic, Chain Dive, Ibara, and Virtua Fighter 4, but also a lot of ports/remakes from older systems that they adapted to the PS2.

Gonna brag a little, but working at a Gamestop right at the end of the PS2's life was absolutely nuts. We had probably over 1000 ps2 games in our store from absolute shovelware to the rarest jrpg's I still regret not picking up to this day. I played and bought so many games. On top of that, I still have a copy of Rule of Rose somebody randomly traded in one day (though I'm all but sure that copy doesn't work anymore). It was one of the few fond memories I have of that awful place.
