I actually love this puzzle. I consider it the single greatest puzzle in the history of horror games, if not all video games.

It intuitive, unlike so many point and click adventure games where the solution is to back track to a random place, pick up a seemingly unrelated item, and then drag the item over to the piano and watch some hijinks script out.

It isn't a mindless baby-tier ""puzzle"" like the ones in Resident Evil which are 90% matching keys to doors and jewels to statues (the video game equivalent of inserting the square block into the square hole).

And it doesn't go too far in the other direction requiring you to have a math degree like Riven (which I still respect).

It isn't a generic "video gamey" puzzle like all of the block puzzles in ocarina, which break ludonarrative Dissonance and don't make any attempt to merge gameplay with the themes and atmosphere of the story. It blends naturally into the world instead of standing out as nonsensical video game bullshit. It's easy to believe a classroom would have a piano and a poem about birds.

PS: Plebbit spacing isn't real, so don't even say it.

The puzzle some hints to remove other possibilities but you cannot 1:1 translate every hint to every key you need to press, so you still need to bruteforce your way. Let's say that 20 million people played this game, then some of those who bruteforced their way got lucky and some don't. When I tried to solve it, I didn't realize that "birds without a voice" was a reference to "limit yourself to muted keys", what I thought was "you need to play the piano for those who cannot do it themselves" otherwise it would be pointless to do it in the first place, and every puzzle that involves an instrument expects you to play music, not to not play it, so I assumed the muted keys where traps.

Now you can have two different experiences, one like this anon who spent three months to solve a game which I guess it's ok back then when you could neither emulate nor acquire more games, I too spent a lot of time trying to beat Broken Sword. Or like the Dunning-Kruger around here, got luck bruteforcing the puzzle and pretend you were just more intelligent than the rest.

It's a great logical puzzle.
It's not a very organic puzzle though.
(push these piano keys using hints from a poem to make a silver medallion drop from the wall)

Adventure games often struggle with balance between logical fun difficult puzzles and making the puzzles feel organic (puzzles that would make sense in the real world and aren't "game-y"). But horror games often get a free-pass from organic puzzles, since the MC is bat-shit crazy. So it actually makes sense that you have to enter his insane pattern-noticing schizo mindset.

How?
That's literally the first thing I connected.
You have a piano with - very noticeable - keys that don't make a sound. Then you see a poem called "Birds without a voice" near it . Does not take an Einstein to activate the neurons and notice a connection.

I think then I simply brute forced the rest after the pelican which is obviously the first white key.
