People think this might end up with a D1200 because because it's named RG556 (meaning 5.5" screen, 6th generation chip), and anbernig bossman previously talked about a RG506 that would have a D1200. Basically this hinges on the 6th gen anbernig chip remaining a D1200.

RG arc is awesome just needs a better chip for saturn. Might as well give it the analog triggers though I don't think it's needed.

Also, there are zero good ps1, n64, saturn, or dreamcast games that need the stick AND the dpad. You can just assign the dpad to emulate the stick for dreamcast and 64.

Already did it on other devices and the dpad is totally fine for all those games like ocarina

Yeah I was hoping to pawn it off to someone unawares and was willing to go lower, but losing nearly $100 is just a big no-no for me. I'll just stick with it for now. Gives me more incentive to go through the retro library I guess. In the meantime I'll keep eyeing the deck/ally and see if they drop in price further. Might make more sense to keep a portable retro emulation like the RP3+ for quick trips and a bigger deck for more permanent gaming.

Tedious shutdown procedure before you can power off.
Game saves on writable system SD card, so its easily corrupted.
It's a good formfactor, but it has some definite shortcomings.

My XD is a much better clamshell handheld, but it did cost a fair bit more.

Pretty good in that x86 machines are the only source of reliable emulation, but I still think the OLED Deck is a bit steep and the defective by design screen is retarded especially for retro. Might want to consider the Ally whenever they fix the spicy SD reader for the VRR and Freesync in that case. I've heard varying reports about the quality of the buttons though, so no idea there.

I got my Steam Deck a few months ago and have already beaten Wario Land 4, Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Mega Man Legends, Tron Bonne, Parasite Eve and Jumping Flash 1 and 2 on the thing. Galileo G8 telescopic controller.

The finest phone controller I have ever used. Perfection. I guess the only criticism I could make is it's a little big but I don't play games on the go and shit so it's fantastic for gaming in bed or at my desk.

I just watched a video on that. Handheld windows looks pretty clunky. Makes me think of how often my gaming PC running windows shits the bed of "just fucking boot into playnite I want to use a gamepad for everything" forcing me to hook up a mouse and keyboard I don't want to be there.

I have been considering removing that HDD and putting chimeraOS on it for a more pad-centric UI.

How often do you have to use a mouse/touchscreen/keyboard on the odin?
Can you take off windows and put on ChimeraOS?
(Can you order easily replaced sticks like for the deck, for if/when you start getting stick drift?)

Niiiice, didn't want to put to much effort into the side content if it wasn't gonna carry over. So far I'm stunned how well everything is running on the A54 considering it's supposed to be fairly middle of the road.

Playing the OG .hack games feel as good as I thought they would on mobile. I think from here on in I'm gonna be investing in phones for my mobile gaming. If this is considered middle of the road and already doing this well up to the ps2, then I really don't need much more. Only gribe is the virtual controls, but if the backbone is as good as the hype leads on then I'm gonna be a happy camper.

the game has a lot of filler content and not much storyline across all 4 titles
your total playtime across four individual games that you would have been charged for in the early 2000s is going to be about 40ish hours, which is fairly low for even a single jRPG of that era
virus cores are pretty obnoxious, especially in conjunction with balancing infection level and having to data drain data bugs
the item system is rather annoying because the game bombards you with skill scrolls but doesnt give you the inventory space to support them
the combat system is bizarre because its "action" based but you actually just spend most of the time menuing or being locked into place by skills
the ai is non-existent, and party members will likely spam ineffective skils or just plain do nothing until you issue commands
the phases are pretty awful design in so many ways; only skeith ever really felt plot relevant across all of the .hack media AND it has the best design (spooky humanoid that glides around and literally crucifies you and puts you into a coma) as opposed to a lot of the others (a flat fuck png slab, a fucking leaf, 2 heads, etc) and cubia isnt hard just long drawn out fights
idk i can go on and on about how the game lacks in so many ways even for a game of its time
but god ill always love IMOQ and early .hack for the vibes alone

Android is borderline useless, has issues detecting L2 and R2 on native games, dual booting method they use on stock will corrupt your SD.

I don't really care to play Gamecube or PS2 on a small screen, so with that in mind: Which Retroid would you recommend as a first time emulation handheld purchase? I was looking at the 2S as it can handle up to N64/ Dreamcast/ PS1 and thats as far as I'd go, but it has a 3.5" screen which a lot of people complain about, but honestly I was okay with that on a 3DS back when. The 3+ doesn't seem to make sense now with the 4+ around the corner from what I read and the 2S is virtually the same device just better designed and a smaller screen. So really, would I be okay just going for a 2S and saving myself $100 or is the bigger screen THAT good.

Truth be told, while a bespoke OS was comfy, that's not really it, especially since Daijisho makes the OS feel pretty much like a linux handheld.

I think it may just be that the horizontal form factor feels "modern" to me. PSP, 3DS, Switch Vita. And I know DS isn't exactly old but I was a broke fuck so I got it late enough that it felt old to me.

Playing retro on vertislop just FEELS right. GB/GBC were exclusively vert, and the most popular GBA was the vert revision. In turn that made retro console games feel right in vert, since GBA is where a lot of retro games got their first proper handheld ports.

I'm aware this is almost entirely nostalgia, but it's hard to deny that, despite 2S being the more powerful budget system, I still kinda look at the Miyoo Flip and RG35XX+ longingly

I love my RG405M. It’s the perfect size and weight imo. Only complaint is the inline shoulder buttons but it makes it way more pocketable so it’s not a huge deal in my opinion. I hope they do an RP 4 Pro level of performance update this year and make it more comfortably capable of GC and PS2.

Just look up Odin Lite videos on Youtube, there's plenty of testing for the chip already. Short answer is it can do like half of the catalog well and half struggles. The Pro will probably be the better choice if you want everything mostly flawless.

Oh I didn't know the Odin-lite had the same chip. Looking it up it seems like all of GC is good with minor tweaks, but PS2 is hit-or-miss and still needs tweaks. Guess I'll wait to see the retrocorp reviews, but it's looking like I'll be skipping the RP4 and Pro then and going straight to the next price point like Deck or Odin 2.

After a couple of days with it, so far the A54 is very decent with emulation up to the ps2. If you can get it for the sale price (around $150) and need a new phone, it's worth it for a budget emulation handheld as well. So far it's running almost every JAPANESE ps2 game at 1.5x resolution at the proper framerate (I was surprised DMC3 ran at a silky smooth 60 fps), and it doesn't run hot either or absolutely destroy your battery like some anons said in the previous thread said.

Now for the negatives, for some reason western games that are more demanding usually run bad. So far I've tried a couple and most have to be turned down to standard resolution and lower some of the graphics settings to make them run "okay". It's weird because some of the Japanese games have much better graphics so I guess that's just a testament to "optimization"(?)

GameCube emulation is also super hit or miss. If it's a first party Nintendo game developed in house it runs just fine, but so far everything else I've tried has some significant frame drops and there's not a lot that can be done to fix it.

So I guess if anyone's curious in the future about this phone and it's emulation capabilities and if it's worth it, there you go. Good for everything up to ps2 and most of the ps2's library, some GC games work as a bonus.

Dunno if there are other phones out there that are better for the price, but at least this'll tide me over for the Retroid Pocket 4+ or whatever that's gonna be.

It also taught me the importance of a handheld being "pocketable" as that was something I didn't think was all that important until now.

My point was linux is just a pain in the ass to scrape boxart for, while daijisho makes it relatively pain free. Dang, look at all the shit that's come out this past week.
GB300 is the basic Famiclone we all know and hate, but now it's been released as an actual emulation device that can do SNES and GBA apparently, cheaper than an SF-2000 (in more than just price). Look at those silly shoulder buttons, oh my god.
Next one just seems to be a stand-alone version of a battery pack famiclone without the phone charger.
Dy14 looks like a silly copy of the LG Wing/AI Unicorn/RGB30/etc but those buttons and d-pad do look good tho. Shame the analog stick is in the wrong fucking spot.
A20 looks to be the old powerbank/phone battery charger famiclone with new colours and Switch analog sticks now.

That's fair, just figured it was worth documenting as I've seen information on this phone all over the place. I was using a hacked vita before this and so far this is much, much better for emulation. I also find myself using this a lot more for gaming while I'm out and about as it's very easy to just pull it out and start playing on it when I'm not busy. I also like how you can accept calls while you're playing and it's a very inoffensive little pop-up that also let's you put the call on speaker or Bluetooth without pausing or closing the app.

The sad thing is that I think the backbone is probably going to kill its pocketability and I don't think I'm going to be taking that with me everywhere, and using the touchscreen as a controller still doesn't feel good on any 3d games that arent rpgs, but we'll see.

All DotEmu emulators are superb and share the same User Interface, once you learn one you learn all. You can find the cracked APK, but it is worth paying for these, to buy a beer to the dude, this is amazing quality.
All of the emulators they make are great.

Lemuroid is also great, it even scrape the covers by itself, but you must have the correct ROMs for that. It uses Retroarch Cores and will run most emulators in a single APK.

Perfect, the only issue with the deck is how "portable" it actually is and it's battery life. So the backbone, so far it's super nice as advertised, but there are some gripes.

When/if you ever decide to give a new controller a try; I cannot recommend the G8 Galileo enough, no controller I have ever had (gamesir x2, backbone, kishi v1) beats it. I wanted to like the backbone; I really did. But the G8 feels so much sturdier and the usb-c actually flexes a bit for cases and such and its cheaper than the backbone's retail price.

That's one thing that I'm happy about with the backbone. The A54 is relatively large already, and with the backbone on there it's still pocketable, but sticks out a bit. It's just a bit smaller than a switch length wise, but it's thin enough that if you needed to you could quickly pocket it... but, as that's not ideal, the controller itself is small enough that you could just throw that in your other pocket if need be or leave it in the car. I think the retroid pocket 4+ is still gonna be king when it comes to a GC/PS2 you can comfortably fit in your pocket, but like I said earlier, while I'm waiting on them to iron everything out with the initial release or a really good sale, this is a very nice alternative.

Also, the GKD Mini seems to have far better hardware and buttons than the GKD Pixel. They were really just trying to make a better RG Nano to upshow Anbernic, which they successfully did, but at this point anyone who doesn't have the Miyoo Plus or the RG35XX is likely going to want the RG35XX Plus. These novelty nano/micro devices have started to wear out their welcome with only feasibly being able to play NES/GB/GBC games simply due to their size, even if they can technically run GBA/PS1/even DS and N64, the resolution is scrunched or the pixel density is too intense for the human eye to fucking see it. And even then, people enjoy it for a novelty for one or two minutes at a time and won't actually want to play NES/GB/GBC games on something unless it's at least the size of an official GBmicro.

Did you install emudeck? That should do a LOT of the setup for you. Watch a video on how to install it and it'll take care of all the emulation and settings for you. Also, retroarch can be a tad intimidating but when you play around in it a bit it really isn't that bad. A tad archaic maybe, but very straight forward. Trust me bro, it's not that bad, but even if it is for you, just let emudeck handle everything. It's one of the best things about the steamdeck.

My issue with it is I only use the Deck as a PC instead of a handheld, and every time I try to understand how to configure a controller to a specific game I end up quitting. No and they never have been. There's expansion packs, there's downloadable content, there's locked content, and then there's microtransactions.
An expansion pack would be like getting the Halo 2 map pack.
Downloadable content is any additional content that wasn't already in the game.
Lockable content is content already part of the game but you have to pay additional fees to access it.
Microtransactions, with literally "micro" in the fucking name, is when you pay a small amount for additional resources/unlocking locked content faster/easier. Loot crates are microtransactions. New skins are dlc. Entire companies pushed to make an entire generation believe it's all the same thing.
