For the translation I said there was plenty of empty space left in the rom, but I'm starting to run into space trouble in many cases. A couple of banks of packed and those are used a lot for text.

See here for instance I had to reduce "points" to "pts" which doesn't look very good. I'm hoping I'll free up some space later so I can come back to it.
Also I often have to do some code changes to change the placement of certain things in some strings like names, numbers, etc it's the second time I managed to pull a code change which uses up the exact same number of bytes I'm replacing (I can't even seem to afford to jump out/in in those cases), though both times I had to do without LDY 00 thus assuming that Y is always going to be the same number when reaching my code. Which seems to work, so far. We'll see!

>> No.10552464

>>10552460
That's fine, don't worry about it. Original translations back in the day often had to truncate or simplify English dialog to fit in the ROM since Japanese text is more compact.

I always wanted a port of Shamus for the NES but then I considered that a Master System port might be better as it's easier to do soft sprites and diagonal firing with it. However there's no existing Z80 version, most versions of the game were on 6502 machines so the code would have to be totally rewritten.

Here's the source listing for Centipede. This is 6502 so it's much easier to port this to NES than Pac-Man.

that is the annoying PITA about NES code. Everything has to fit in 32k pieces and you can't stretch the code to however big you want like on the Mega Drive.

What's the current best way to boot ISOs off a hard drive on ps2?

>> No.10553989

Just finished Full Quiet, it was pretty great and looked nice for an NES game. I think I either missed or accidentally skipped some dialog though.

What is the deal with Ferris and the rest of the team? I'm pretty sure the dreams you get are out of sequence and reference past events, same for the radio transmissions. Sometimes everyone works together as normal, but a few transmissions seem to imply he's responsible for Tolah getting trapped in the parallel dimension, breaking the relays, and I'm pretty sure a present vision of Oannah states that he crossed to the other dimension but "changed form" somewhere. Did he pull the entire team into it as well? It's extra confusing because Pap at the shack in the plateau says they never would've made it this far without him, which is certainly a present event and not in the past.

> Running PS2 ISOs
You'll need FreeMcBoot before you do anything. Burn it to a CD, run it, and then copy the files to a memory card so it boots every time.
After that, you can use ELF to load games from a hard drive, USB drive, or Ethernet which is the best but most annoying and complicated option. You have to connect to a Windows PC running SMB file share (an antique and jank ass protocol)
USB and Hard drive don't have as fast of a data throughput as Ethernet, so you might run into stuttering FMVs and slower speeds, which is why you want to set up Ethernet if possible.

Setting is cosmic horror sci fi, Alien xenomorph expy villian protagonist.

What logical method could exist for power stealing when your protagonist is a tiny pink neotanous xenonorph? Does he burrow into people's skulls? Secrete mutagenic saliva? Clearly can't swallow enemies.

Enemies are humans with flamethrowers, ice guns, swords, etc.

I've made a lot of progress, I believe I'm about 80% done on the translation. I've found more scenes that were cut from the US release including 2 mini bosses.

When I'm done with the translation there are two things I'd like to try to do, first increase the walking speed, because it's faster in the US release (I believe it might just be because they cut the step sounds), and also see if I can import the US battle theme to the JPN version because it's about the only thing that's better in the US release. If I succeed they'll be optional extra patchess.

Ok, once you can deal w the attribute table properly you'll have to store where you've been in RAM, and when you re-enter a room have it check what to load onto the attribute table.
Now, this could be kind of a problem with the 2K of RAM the NES has: You could think about targeting a cart with an 8KB memory expansion like MMC3 or VRC6.

Keep you a list of the rooms in the map, and for each room, it has a number for what palette it should be (and keep it updated as you go in and out of the rooms)
Also every tile has a number for which room it belongs to. When you go to draw the tile, you look up what color that room should be and set the attributes to that color.

Pretty much the only thing I have left are the list of enemies (there are actually 2 lists, though sometimes the names are shared between the two), and their moves in combat. Due to my process (I do everything empirically, editing things live while playing; yes I'm aware this is prone to forgetting things but I'll figure that out last) and the fact that a lot of enemies aren't the same between the 2 versions, this is going to take quite a while for few strings.
At least I found the RAM value that sets which enemies spawn so I can just spawn wherever. Hopefully I can manipulate what their attacks are in the same way.

The game is actually very much able to spawn 3 different enemy types at once, unless one of the enemies is bigger sized. Something it doesn't utilize a lot.

I managed to replace the "got X pts of damage!" by "takes X damage!" btw

Other than that I only have the intro left

Nerdy Nights is still the best tutorial probably, it does some outdated and dumb stuff, but it will get you printing graphics and moving sprites on screen.
After that i would get the heck away from NESASM3, buggy ass piece of shit, but fine to learn the basics on. ASM6F is great and i love it.
> what next
You can try these NEShacker videos, they seem good to learn from, but were made well after i already knew how to do stuff.

I've never done a romhack, so this question may sound silly, but it's just a curiosity:
is it possible to write a new NES game from scratch?
If not from scratch, at least without starting from an existing game and modding it.

I know that it's simpler to mod levels and sprites, but I have this question because I was thinking about indie devs, and how they make better games than bilion-dollar companies.
In the future years, wouldn't it be nice to have devs making new NES games, that we could play on original (or compatible) hardware, or with emulators?
I've seen wonderful mods, and since the NES is simpler than the SNES as a platform, it could be used as a standard for future games.
Of course, it could be doable if we could arrive to the point that a new game could be made with some high level language like C, instead of writing NES assembly.

no
we already have that with romhacks and its free, and more importantly free of IP rights and copyright bullshit. anyone can do anything they want and none of it can ever cost money.
absolutely free
as for indie devs, they already do make more "simplistic" or "oldskool" games simply out of necessity. the difference is theyre not bound by 30yr old hardware limitations/idiosyncrasies, and most important, can read and write their own code

also the last thing id ever want to see incentivized in the vidya industry would be lazy devs swapping a few sprites on a 30yr old game and calling it a new title. cuz you know thats exactly what theyd do: the bare minimum, fuck it, ship it, theyre idiots and will buy it anyways, etc.
we already have that problem with endless remake/remaster drivel, this would just amplify it.
any sort of new idea would die immediately as any studio would see it as a total waste of time, money, and resources. we would just get the same games over and over again, with minor tweaks, for full price

if were bothering to think about those AAA jerks in the first place, my ideal scenario would be a future where more devs release some sort of toolkits for their games. its very obviously just a good idea. so many game series have become "evergreen" infinite moneymakers for studios. look at bethesda, theyve released fuckall for over a decade at this point, yet they can still get people to buy their old broken games every few years cuz muh mods

>> No.10589973

>>10589890
>i imagine you could also kneecap the emulator to only run your game
this was actually the difference between bleem and bleemcast
bleem could run any PS game on PC, so long as you had the legit disk it COULD potentially run bootleg games too, but you needed to patch it.
it was decided in court that this, ultimately, was not illegal. but they still got brought to court for it constantly anyways. so when bleemcast came around they decided to make it so only "packs" of games would work with each release, in anticipation of more lawsuits
if you wanted to play MGS on dreamcast, you needed a copy of bleemcast MGS, a legit copy of MGS for PS, and a dreamcast.

in fact what actually did them in wasnt even emulation related at all
my exp with bleem was with the PC version, but it was still a pretty beefy emu for the time. you could upscale to higher resolutions, apply bilinear filtering etc.
they wanted to show those features off, so they put before and after pics of sonys games on their packaging. THAT was the part that was deemed misuse of IP, and they were ordered to pull all the copies of bleemcast and repackage them. which ultimately just ended with them going tits-up, as they were barely hanging by a thread from all the prior lawsuits

>> No.10590215

>>10589527
What the hell are you talking about? Emulation itself is highly precedented as being not in violation of intellectual property law, and if neither the game nor emulator code contained copyright or trademark violations then it wouldn't be "their shit" to begin with.
Distributing a first-party BIOS with the emulator would be a clear violation, but that goes for any other emulator too. Whether something is being sold for profit or not is not relevant to making a case for it being a copyright violation.

If that gets him to move on to something more original, then that's a net positive in my book.

Isn't source code available? Maybe someone else can finish it.

Thanks for the heads up, anon. The link for the patcher he posted has been archived, and here is the latest version (Portal 64 v0.15.0) pre-patched for everyone: http://files.catbox.moe/1pjzv0.z64

And here is the Portal 1 vpk file (portal_pak_000.vpk) necessary to patch the file, in case you need it or want an older version of Portal 64: https://files.catbox.moe/vm0z9u.vpk

The majority of the users in romhacks.org prefer suck each other dicks on discord than actually pay attention to the site. Spike "the owner of romhacks.org as well cdromance", has very little enthusiasm to run his site

I, too, am jealous of their ability to code a game.

I learned C++ at 16. I have developed my own games that did not involve me stealing others works.
You can do it bro. Stop the projecting posts and just learn instead of being useless.

Do you plan on hacking aladdin? I reverse engineering for years and write some hacking notes to help future romhackers

Personally, no, though I could just make some of those codes permanent for convenience. I was just pointing out for anon that this was indeed the right thread to post his codes.

Pretty nice work there too, anon, I don't do proper coding or even hacking in general for Genesis, but that looks like it could be useful. Like, those moving ground spikes don't look out of place in the world of Aladdin at all.
