I think there's nothing WORSE in our hobby than a genuinely good video game that happens to be difficult... why? Oh, it's simple really, it's because IT'LL KICK YOUR ASS AND PUNCH YOU IN THE BALLS... and yet you can't put it down! When it's fun, truly fun, to play something, you'll want to do it even if you're losing... does that mean that you won't get frustrated? Oh, that's the tough part, you do get frustrated anyways! It's just that you keep going despite that, it's a mixture of odd feelings that feel like they contradict each other completely, but it works. We all have memories with a titles that left an impression due to this...

I thought it'd be fun to discuss what those titles are for us, also just discuss the odd relationship between difficulty and quality in video games, as it's DEEPLY related, but there doesn't seem to be a perfect formula, as it's all subjective, but also because there are many factors into what makes a video game good or bad, and what makes difficulty good or bad. I feel that, for retro stuff, the main difficulty archetypes we have is arcade, that usually lasts 30 minutes at best to finish a run, but you're SENT BACK to the title screen often, and NES hard, where you get unlimited continues, but it's JUST THAT HARD anyways.

Out of the ones I've struggled the most with, the majority were due to their arcade style of limited lives and continues, so back to the title screen it was for me... ALL OF THE TIME. It's frustrating, but you know that you might get further on this next one, and a run lasts less than 30 minutes... so why not? I got my ass KICKED by Aladdin and The Lion King, which feels ridiculous since they're Disney IPs, you know, FOR KIDS? Anyways, these are brutal at first... but then that's where this arcade style is fun, you keep getting better at it, and eventually you not only beat it, you get so FREAKING GOOD AT IT too. It feels so sweet.

I was surprised when someone told me MM2 is the hardest Mega Man game. It doesn't even feel that difficult, because it's designed so well. I feel many shmups and probably Castlevania also fits this category

MM2 is one of the easiest which is why it's the most popular.

MM1 is the hardest by far, that's why everyone skips it.
