It's great. Only downside is 80% of the library is Japan exclusive so there's a lot of games that are unplayable because reading is required. Fortunately it's also the console with the most SHMUPs which is a genre that doesn't require reading so even the JP ones are perfectly playable

I'm sure you'll be cheesed with what I am about to sure. You, yes even you, can play most PC-engine games now as a text hookable emulator is available for this system. For this system it is mednafen, but if you are someone desperate enough to use MTL, you'll likely have survived enough lab experiments to be able to use it.
Can you play through games with text in them? Yes. Can you play through RPGs? Yes, provided you can read out kana or find a tool that also outputs romaji so you can see where it fucks up. Should you learn Japanese if you are already at that point? Yes, but you won't due to your crippling self-destructive behavior.

4th generation was the peak of the medium for me, though 3rd and 5th generations were good too, 6th was the beggining of the end and both 7th and 8th were the zombie eras, still ongoing.

I came totally new to vr around 2020 and my entry was the mini consoles. Never played SNES or MegaDrive before that, and was unaware of the existence of the PC- Engine.
At first I was contrarian and wanted the PCE to be me favorite, just because it was the underdog. I still love it. But my top is MegaDrive, then SNES, then PCE. This is mainly due to the depth of the libraries for each and also I find the SNES to be a bit floaty and lacking for the arcade and shmup games I prefer.

Uhhh, a bit? Better? I'm not an expert on shmup so I can't compare it properly
You have your basic weapon and you have 3 powerups (non stackable) that you can pick up. The powerup rotates and depending on which powerups, they can shoot up, down, left or right, the fire one is left or right only IIRC
If you hold the fire button, a meter charges, when you stop holding fire it shoots homing missiles
It's a shmup where you feel extremely powerful, you get power ups on death every time too. Each stages are cut in 3 section and you can even continue at the section you game over'd at
I picked it up because of the awesome soundtrack, but the game was pretty good. Because of the extremely lenient continue system, you can definitively beat it

>and was unaware of the existence of the PC- Engine
Same. I had no idea what that, the TurboGrafix, or any of the many Japanese PC platforms were. I also didn't really understand what a Neo Geo, Pocket or otherwise, was. The only time I had every heard of a WonderSwan as a kid was in some US Digimon magazine, and the way it was mentioned made me assume it was just another kind of v-pet platform.
Now I have a general idea of what these things are, but haven't made the jump to actually learning how they work or what their libraries are like. When I look up a game and see it has a ton of ports, I'll usually just grab the SNES one out of convenience/laziness.

Nah, it was ridiculously short-lived and it was mostly just FMV games. Most of the 'good' games were just serviceable ports of PC-98 or x68k games, and the few exclusive releases usually ended up on the playstation.

If you're an insane NEC and/or Hudson fanboy, maybe get one, but it'll be mostly a thing you stick on a shelf rather than a thing you play

Yes very good. SNES is way better, and the Genesis is also better, but not much.

PCE/TG16 is hindered by the four button controller which doesn't' allow for very complex games, but it has some bangers. Lots of solid titles that are fun to play after you've gotten deep into the SNES and Genesis' libraries.

Has a grand total of about 10 good games that aren't better somewhere else. And that includes scroll shooters, a lot of which are just arcade downgrades. People love to defend it because it's the contrarian move but let's be honest here, even Neo Geo has more good games than this.

I don't know anon I just went through them and the only one that stood out for me was Download. The rest are either better in arcades or just seem generic as hell. I don't need another version of 1943 in my life, don't need a cute but janky game like Magical Chase, don't need something as generic as Super Star Soldier or Final Soldier or Soldier Blade. This is the part where you say I don't like scroll shooters and when they're as mediocre as this, I really don't. But there's a lot of good ones too, from the same era, in arcades
Not including CD games here, just the OP pic

And speaking about arcade ports games like Gradius 1-2, R-Type, Darius 1 or Salamander are arcade perfect with very slight changes to my knowledge.
