I genuinely love exploring this level, most of the levels in Sonic 3D Blast in fact, as they're actually well designed... but without the shield that gives you protection from fire, this can be quite tough.

Reasons such as this game needs a lava level and and ice level. Except we have tons of ice levels here on earth and they're not followed up by an equal amount of lava levels. That's not a healthy expectation. Lava should be rare unless the game is set in hell

I see, I get the hate for it, but it's possible to go at a decent speed if you just go for it, since the ring system is on your side afterall, it's alright to hit things on the way to the end, it's not like we get on Labyrinth or Scrap Brain where you'll be killed, you just get hit and move on once you're more familiar with the layout, and when you go fast it feels pretty nice, also peak OST and look.

I love how Sonic 2 on Master System/Game Gear ditched the traditional platformer 1st level with all of those hills and trees, tons of green, for this lava filled level. It was bold and also iconic, but I think most of that was due to the 1st boss on the Game Gear, the version most people played, was awful on that screen resolution, and filtered so many, including me, but I love 8-Bit Sonic 2 now.
