I feel like it was intentional. The more obnoxious "best sellers" cases you see in this thread for the older consoles were much maligned at the time. Most people hated getting a game and having the art ruined by adding those huge logos and making the box a different color.

There were a few games it worked out well for though. I have the "greatest hits" version of MGS4 which looks really nice in an all red box.

I have never, in the history of anyone or anywhere, heard this or seen this until I came to this board years ago. No one in person, and I've had realtime exerpeince with many different groups over every generation. Why does this board care so much? I think a lot of them look cool. Not the silver ones to me, but the alt colors were eyecatching in a good way. Never met a human being in the flesh who cared in a negative way.

I know that for some games, the Player's Choice/Platinum/Greatest Hits version of the game is a later revision. Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen's English release had a display bug in the initial release that took species descriptions in the pokedex and cut off any words after the first, so Squirtle changed from being the "Tiny Turtle Pokemon" to being the "Tiny Pokemon" along with like twenty other Pokemon that were "Tiny x Pokemon," and the Player's Choice releases fixed this. Tomb Raider 1-3 (and maybe 4, I don't remember for sure) on the Playstation had Demos for other games on the disc starting with the Player's Choice releases (with Tomb Raider 1 having at least FIVE different Player's Choice revisions, with each one having different selections of demos), but AFAIK the main game is identical.

Weird to see how many people seem to not know what these labels actually meant and how games got branded with them.

I loved the green PS1 labels. Really made the game feel more special, despite later figuring out that it meant that if a game reached 1 million units sold, then it gets a reprint as a GH release. Wish they stuck with it, because it got worse with each generation after PS1. PS4 GH copies feel like a cheap redbox rental I found being sold at Krogers

PS1 Greatest Hits were 150k (and eventually got changed to 250k) sales, not 1m sales.

>The Player's Choice line was introduced for GameCube titles in January 2003. However, the sales barrier for games was decreased from 1 million, down to 450,000 by June 2003 and eventually only 250,000

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Hits_(PlayStation)#History
>When Sony introduced the program for PlayStation in March 1997, games could become Greatest Hits titles after selling at least 150,000 copies and being on the market for at least a year. Minimum sales required eventually rose to 250,000. When the program came to PlayStation 2 in 2002, games could become Greatest Hits titles after selling at least 400,000 copies and being on the market for at least one year
>To qualify as a PlayStation 2 “Greatest Hit,” a title must have been on the market for one year with 400,000 copies produced, proving to be a force in driving software sales and the demand for the hardware that supports it. PlayStation “Greatest Hits” game sales must be in excess of 250,000 units during the life of the product

>Platinum Range titles were recognisable by a platinum/silver coloured band on the game's casing, both the front and the spine. The PlayStation design used the same logo that was introduced in early 1997 for all PAL region game cases,[2] the differences being the colouring and that it indicates itself as Platinum. The PlayStation 2 design of the platinum games had a silver band to act as a border and to contain the game's original cover, which is shrunk to fill about 75% of the platinum cover. The early platinum games that were released prior to 2003 had the PlayStation logo repeated twice on the front case, once on the platinum border, and once on the original game's case. (with the original game's case dropping the PlayStation logo after 2002.) In 2005, a new featured layout was introduced; these have a black border, and silver outlines around the shrunken original game cover. There is also a red orb located at the bottom of the original game cover with the words Platinum The Best of PlayStation 2 and for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable games respectively. The platinum band can also be seen on the manual.

>PlayStation and PlayStation 2 platinum game discs do not feature any of the original game disc design; instead, it is replaced with a simple silver design – which, along with the copyright notices around the edges, features the game's name in the centre surrounded by a black outline.

>To become a Platinum release, it was initially required that a game have over 500,000 sales in its first six months of release.[3] By 2006, the requirements had been revised to over 400,000 sales after six months on the market[4] (PAL region sales in particular; games that sell over 400,000 units in another region alone, such as Japan or the U.S., do not necessarily qualify for a Platinum title).
