Are you a Crash or a Spyro person?

I've only beaten Crash 1 and started Spyro. Crash 1 is janky, but Spyro is just kind of boring and repetitive.

This. My honest thoughts are both were amazing for their time and for kids but yeah that's about it

Yeah, I think Crash for now.

>> No.10514735

I used to think 3D 'formers were unrightfully forgotten, or dismissed because SM64 did it first. but having played most of them, I think none of them really held the candle to it, including Rare. Crash is well-made, but it's basically subway surfers. Spyro is just too easy / boring and went to shit right after 1. Ape Escape could be fine, but the godawful control and tiny stages kill it. Banjo starts off great, but has too much coomlecting and shows every bad trend Rare had times 10. DK64 made history with its backtracking 'tism and minigames. Conker looks cool, but the gameplay is just dull and the humor aged like milk.
it's easy to say SM64 is overrated by tendies and all, and take all it did for granted. but virtually no one in the 5th gen managed to do what it did. no wonder the genre died, surprising it survived at all after Crash 3 and DK64.

Crash. I liked Spyro but I remember playing it for long period made me feel a little ill. No idea why, something about the controls or the camera (I know the control in Crash 1 are kinda garbage and even worse than Spyro but that's just crap controls - it never made me feel physically sick)

>> No.10515505

I like Crash a lot but haven't played Spyro since I was a kid. Is the collectathon shit in those games mind numbing or is it okay? Wanna give them a shot, HLTB says each entry takes like 10 hours to 100% so it shouldn't be that bad

I understand that this has already been discussed to death but this truly is some kind of an anomaly. Like what was the thought process behind the changes made? They completely ruin the game, it becomes literally unplayable. And why not revert everything back in later prints or some shit?

>all pre-64 mario games are just run, jump, wait, run
except not. you can explore up and down, left and right.
in Crash 1, there are levels like Upstream (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK-h4M4Aetg&t=533s)), where you run in a straight line and only time the jumps. or just hog / run away from boulder levels which are basically mobile runner games.
of course, that's not every level—many have 2D / 3D gameplay—, but a significant chunk of them.
it's still well done; it's just a mediocre concept executed well.

Klonoa isn't even 3D, it's more like 2.25D.
Anyway, I haven't played it that much. It's a good effort, the game is very charming and cute, and the moveset SEEMS to promise some cool techniques… but the gameplay just didn't captivate me that much, it was kinda whatever. it's neither much action, collecting, or puzzles. it's slow, the level design is simplistic, and there's little freedom in exploration. after a few levels that felt like "more of the same" I was done with it.
I guess this is what PS owners had instead of Kirby 64. I prefer the latter (though not by much)—I know many hate it, but there's the whole fun of trying all the moves, and it's just a cute, beautiful, chill game.
