It's fascinating how people still discover new things to this day. Since this year marks OoT's 25h anniversary, I'm gonna dump some of the latest (no dying soldier or fisherman's hat)

You may post whatever you got too

I love this because the game heavily implies that you fight alongside the sages, like how Impa walked ahead to Bongo Bongo or how Darunia's son points out that you destroyed the dragon with him

The videos waste your time with sluggish pacing, glitches and humdrum things like chickens not being able to reach you or the carpenter's pants having a tiger print. I separate the wheat from the chaf and edit them. It's obviously also nicer to have them in a thread and in webm form

Hoping the controls/checkpoints aren't too outdated (would be playing GameCube version). I'd say losing a lot of progress is the #1 enjoyment killer for me when playing retro. Not new but I've seen people contest that Zelda was always inspired by Tolkien. It oscillates between subtle and right in your face in Ocarina
>literally starts with a spider (Ungoliant) that poisons magic tree (Trees of Valinor) at the behest of devil-stand-in Ganondorf (Melkor)
>world is a creation of space elves (Ainur)
>story about nine heroes of different races and cultures (nine heroes of the Fellowship) defeating unambiguous evil
>Kokiris are simpletons of small stature hiding in the woods (Fallohides/Hobbits)
>Gorons are brawny hotheads (Dwarves) mining in Death Mountain (Mount Doom) until they rouse a fire monster (Balrog) and find themselves suffering at the claws of a dragon (Smaug)
>Zoras are their obvious counterpart (Elves to Dwarves)
>Gerudos are a swarthy desert tribe with red hair (Easterlings with red headscarves)
>villain covets nothing but (the Triforce of) power (Ring of Power), distorts the natural world, takes up residence in a black tower and commands brutal but simple Moblins (Orcs) and creatures as strange as Morpha (Watcher in the Water)
>the wizard-looking guy who tells you about Sheikah as well as Sheikah (Blue Wizards) themselves are dressed in blue and sent to contest evil but "disappear in the East"

I played through it recently after most of my playthroughs being ages ago and only getting as far as the Fire Temple.
It's manageable. Granted, I was playing the PC Port, but the dungeons generally do a good job of guiding you and, as long as you remember to save, I think the only big issue is getting back to where you were in in (I don't think the puzzles and whatnot reset unless it was one that'd reset if you left the dungeon anyway). That said, I think the GC version is prone to freezing, so save often.
> the water temple took them hours and hours to beat on their first playthrough
Yeah, that one's one of the exceptions. As long as you do what you can on each floor it'll still guide you for the most part, but there's a particularly infamous bit about it the key inside the center that is easy to miss. Swapping the Iron Boots on and off is also a reason it takes so long if playing the standard version.

The masks the redeads are wearing are a form of branking and mirror punishment—a penal form of poetic justice that reflects the nature of the crime in the means of mental punishment. They were likely meant to be removed eventually, but since the Sheikah were no more, there was no one left to do that.

>SM: The designers kept this in mind, and tried to create scenery that looked like it really existed. There is no particular model used. However, we did use data material from all around the world, such as a photo collection of German castles. There may be parts that reflect the real world.

>"The Shadow Temple, located in the Kakariko Village graveyard. It is a place where the Sheikah, entrusted with the lives of Hyrule's royal family, have historically taken enemies of the royal family to be interrogated or worse. Because it stands as a symbol of Hyrule's dark history, it is taboo for the royal family to speak of this temple and its horrific purpose."

There's some QoL (with bugfixes taken from elsewhere too) for Ocarina vanilla and can be used with a special patcher too to patch in whatever uncensor or censor you wish for:

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5138/

At the end of the page:

"But what if you want to have the censored Fire Temple in OoT Redux, and not exclusive to the Master Quest patch? Or you want the censored Gerudo textures, or you want a higher text speed (like 3x) or want certain features, and not others?

That can easily be changed, thanks to an amazing software called Patcher64+ Tool, which allows you to toggle whatever feature you want on or off according to your liking, so you can create your own custom Ocarina of Time / Master Quest Redux ROM! You can download the software here if you want to customize your own ROM patch:

Patcher64+ Tool

The tool depends on a computer with PowerShell support. Windows 10 is recommended, but other OS that can install PowerShell could also be used."

I like what they did in Gothic 2, where you have an open world but if you venture to far into the wilderness early on you just get rekt by big monsters. You can choose your affiliation, but the basic story and progression of objectives stays the same and is largely linear. Those kinds of things. BotW just fucked it all up.

I like it. Some people are anal-apocalypsed over it here because it was originally behind their Burger King cool kid's club on Discord. While I agree locking shit behind servers is fucking stupid, nowadays it's publicly available on their github. Fully customizable controls+HUD along with shit like the option to put stuff on the D-pad, tunics/boots being equipable as items, enabling the cooler 3D models for items, and locking the game to a steady 30 FPS (or higher, if you're weird) is all really nice. There's a lot of other little options and weird shit you can fiddle with, the enemy randomizer is fun, especially when a Deku Baba in the Deku Tree gets replaced with a fucking Iron Knuckle.

TL;DR yeah, it's cool.

>Why does it take up so much more space than just an emulator
(mostly speculation:)
Probably because it's a native port of a game designed for a single specific machine (N64) that now has to be adapted to run on many different machines and graphics APIs.
SoH also added features not included in the original game.
You could probably make a build that's stripped down but only runs on your specific hardware+software combo. And use the direct source port repos instead of the SoH one.
In either case, I don't think the port has been completely handwritten or optimized yet. Lots of it was machine translated where the goal was to match the original ROM, not to produce the most optimal PC game. It's possible they could rewrite parts of the code to produce smaller binaries.
Lots of emulators are old/mature as well so they've gotten closer to perfecting themselves over decades where this native port is relatively young and imperfect.

Reading the instructional booklet and seeing all the 3D models of items and descriptions for them was mega kino. I spent so much time in Kokiri Forest, and got filtered after getting to Gohma (I didn't realize you had to "find" her on the ceiling: everything is so dark and muddy in that chamber/lair), so Kokiri Forest and the Lost Woods is still probably the most soulful and wondrous part of the whole game for me. Just download either the Mupen64 or ParaLLEl core in the Retroarch settings. IIRC, Mupen64 is better for accuracy and ParaLLEl for enhancements (high res). Most people probably prefer the latter, but since some of OoT's texture seams blow up in high res and it has some pre-rendered backgrounds, I personally lean towards the former and upscaling like 4x/downscaling 1/4 + a soft CRT shader

The games are unironically so good that any way to play them is fine, even 3DS/Citra

>XGN: Sonic Adventure did not age well at all. The camera is frustrating and the voice overs are very weak. People who are looking for nostalgia could buy this game but even they should wait for Sonic Colors to come out.
>GameShark: There's almost nothing to like about Sonic Adventure. It's clunky and awkward at best, painfully buggy and broken at worst. Its most unforgivable sin, though, is that it's just not fun.
>VideoGamer: Sonic Adventure doesn't just make you realise its age, it also makes you question the world we live in: just how did this ever become the most successful Dreamcast game?

You can even tell he's read that guy's list because he says "(no dying soldier or fisherman's hat)", but doesn't give any credit to anyone but himself, meanwhile zelda secrets anon credits /vr/ with helping him every time he posts that list. OP is indeed a faggot.

Oh, I took "fighting alongside" too literally I guess. Yeah, Darunia fights the dragon while you rescue the hostages, and Ruto explores her temple at the same time as you. It would have been cool to see them more than once, and Saria and Impa at all.

I remember Twinmold being really easy the first time I fought him, then on subsequent playthroughs kept running out of magic. Does this fight basically require that super lon lon milk or whatever that gives you infinite magic?

Because I didn't want to get banned for advertising a Youtube channel, something I was accused of even without mentioning it. I also don't even understand this hoggish, uncharitable mindset of expecting credit and recognition for every stupid thing you do. I love seeing people simply share stuff I made

Rendering techniques have gotten more accurate and less aesthetically pleasing. Better technology does not translate to better aesthetics, and discourages artistic talent/effort because more of the creative process can be offloaded onto complex simulations for lighting, physics, etc.

I feel you. An actual 3D game with this early prerendered look would be amazing but it doesn't even seem like something indies have on their radar. It's all about intentional outdated PS1 graphics for some reason

Also, probably already mentioned ITT but there is a unique skeleton outside Ganon's tower that looks like it could've been a ferocious underling of his. OoT 3D, besides making it look less scary, even went a step further and made it unmistakable that it fought and died to a Hyrulean soldier

On one hand, a BotW style remake makes a lot of sense and would be interesting. On the other hand, Nintendo knows fans still want linear Zelda and a remake can't be that hard to make, so it would be an ideal traditional Zelda to squeeze in between their open world slops. It could still be a lot more open and denser than the original OoT
