The Chaingun and Shotgun are roughly on par in general utility and damage output, but they have strengths and weaknesses against each other.

Chaingun has far longer range and is the only good weapon using its ammo type, and with its constant rate of fire (be that by hanging on the trigger or repeatedly putting out rapid two shot bursts) it has quite a considerable advantage versus certain enemies in certain situations.
Meanwhile, the Shotgun has a higher instant damage output and pain potential by the virtue of putting out seven hitscans absolutely immediately (the Chaingun takes much longer time putting out seven hitscans), with a spread that's tiny at direct distances and still generously tight at a decent distance away from you, and you can often count on getting most if not all of your value from each spent shell against small groups or wider enemies. The strictly horizontal spread of the Shotgun also gives you a handy margin of error in tracking and shooting at a quickly moving target, or a static or slowly moving target while you yourself are hauling ass, making it helpful for hurried hit and run.

Then there's the old "In-Out, In-Out," aka the Peekaboo, where you strafe in and out of cover and take repeated shots. You can do this with the Chaingun, but its not its strong suit as it does DPS over time and you'd be leaving yourself open for longer for comparable damage output, while the Shotgun immediately puts its 7 hitscans out, and then you can quickly step behind cover to rack the pump, and you're ready to step out again with the same immediate output. Distance to your target is a big factor here though.

Versus the Super Shotgun, it does offer more damage per shell by the virtue of putting out 20 hitscans for two shells compared to 7 for one with the normal Shotgun, and that's a very serious consideration, but the Super Shotgun also has WAY shorter effective range overall in all kinds of situations, spreading its 20 hitscans wide both horizontally and vertically, which at times is ok against larger groups, but missed pellets happen often, and at medium distance are guaranteed, so the dual shell expenditure can easily become very wasteful.

Overall, I'll agree with the other anon and say that the player being forced to use the Shotgun OR Chaingun against Barons and Knights often is not the most fun design. They don't have high enough damage output that this is efficient to do and it easily becomes tedious, you need to either just do this rarely, or the player needs to be able to use stuff like infighting or crushers as a means to help deal with these. Optionally the player needs to dodge and flee them until he can find a suitable big gun.

Frontloaded damage from shotguns and bolt actions is always nice and will always make fighting other hitscanners fun (Doom RNG ranges add to the tedium of shotgunning anything with more than 60 health, though). I'm not sure what "medium distance" is but this feels like it to me: Not out of autoaim range, not "in my face", still able to waste pellets unless it's a group of enemies, and at that range that "group" better be nothing more than imps and zombies.

I also agree that it's not much more fun chaingunning groups of pinkies, cacos, or heaven forbid barons. The weapon pickups become more interesting as the encounters do, then the level or episode ends, our inventory resets, and we get an excuse to use all these "lame" guns against all these "lame" enemies near the start again.

Adding more to something doesn't make it more interesting, rather more artificially complicated. Why have a slide-crouch-stupid movement in a game? Why have a double jump at all in some games? Etc. etc. Doom simply managed to hit the sweet spot of "completely easy" yet "engaging". Games after it added more variables to the equation, thus changing the almost complete balance.

So, I'm done the first two episodes of Eviternity II. The first episode was what I expected with the standout map being the one with the water raising and lowering. The second episode is pretty frustrating (the first level is ROUGH) but it gets completely redeemed by having an incredible secret level. Some real fucking wizardry going on there. Since when can a Doom level change / stop / start its music?.

My only real complaint so far is some levels run like shit unless you really lower your res, even on a powerful machine. Poor Doom was never meant to do any of this.

Decorate is also old by itself, dating back to the 2000s, originally it was just a very basic coding language for adding basic decorations to ZDoom without having to sacrifice shit with DeHacked (thus the name), but capabilities expanded pretty fast. Around I think 2006 or 2007, Xaser gathered up a pile of old leftovers and scraps by guys like Malcolm Sailor, Cory Whittle, Scuba Steve, and others, creating Zen Dynamics, a short ZDoom mapset which used Decorate and ACS to create and showcase a wide variety of advanced weapons and monsters.
This was kind of ground zero for a lot of modding because it showed off ZDoom's capabilities very well, and it was easy to learn from.

That's not DecoHack, DecoHack is a program that lets you write pseudo-code in a very Decorate way, and then the program transforms that into DeHacked gobbledigook nonsense for you.
This can be either for standard vanilla DeHacked, or the expanded DeHacked under the MBF21 compat.

basically you're using unity for skeletal animation instead of using literally anything else. yeah that's bonkers.
even if you "like the shaders", you should be importing an already animated model, and then using some free screengrabber from the asset store to render in sequence with transparency.
depending on what you mean by cropping, it might be a totally pointless step. just use the same dimensions on everything, or even the full screen frame.

ultimately, all steps can be done in blender. create shaders, place camera, animate, apply filters & effects in compositor, render animation as frames with transparency.

You don't need to do either of those things for ZScript nor Decorate because you can just define the number of hitscans, their spread, and even the puff type, with the hitscan call.

Undecided on the source port I wanna use. GZDoom is a given for anything that can only run on it, and specific gameplay mods, but I'm torn between Woof!, Nugget, and DSDA. These are all considered vanilla, correct? Woof! seems to only be playable at a low res and DSDA seems higher, and Nugget actually has options, but DSDA is the only port I've seen of these three that actually has demos on the title screen? Jim Bagley blames Carmack for being anal about rendering, and Carmack admits that the outcome was not good and that he should have allowed for more experimentation to arrive at a better solution. I think the reality is that though Bagley is by no means a bad programmer, he was probably busy with more stuff and hoping to knock the project out quickly as just a contractual obligation, using a less than great renderer (which was fast, but almost certainly not 60fps fast), and that this was then stonewalled by Carmack not wanting the game to look floaty and un-solid. Carmack really prided himself on Doom not being all wiggly and floaty like many 3D were.

That entirety of the Saturn port of Doom is actually very wonky and awkwardly put together as a whole, the way it handles sound is just weird as fuck. I suspect that most of the people working on it were busy with other things and gave it minimal attention.

Gzdoom doesn't have the pixel perfect low res widescreen such as Crispy, Woof and Nugget. Also gzdoom has slight lag on my older computer and I have no reason to update my machine, because I'm not interested in new games.

What comes to mapping, I'm never going to map for gzdoom, because I like making vanilla or boom maps and gzdoom has nothing it could add to Doom maps. Slopes are only cosmetic and voodoo scripting is all the scripting I need.

Howerer I'm glad gzdoom exists. Golden Souls is awesome and the gzdoom engine is perfect for making stuff like that, that breaks off from vanilla to something completely different. I use gzdoom when I want to play Golden Souls and other very undoomy Doom wads. Howerer I would never play gzdoom wad, that's for gzdoom not because it would use gzdoom features, but because the author is too noob to even target a correct source port. Noobs make bad maps.

But I'll be honest, to this day I have absolutely no idea how to set resolution in gzdoom properly.
You have Custom Width/Height. Clear and reasonable. Except you can't even see them in simple options menu.
Then you also have Resolution Scale which does god knows what, have multiple resolutions to choose from except you already have Custom Width/Height so how the fuck do they work together, also it has some other arbitrary options that are equally confusing because you've already set the resolution but now it changes this resolution or some other resolution or god knows what.
AND you also have Scale Factor which ALSO changes your resolution somehow except this time it actually changes your Custom Width/Height BUT the values you see in the menu will only be changed after you restart the game.

So let's say you selected 2560x1440 resolution and set Scale Factor to 0.5. Now your game is rendered at 1280x720, which is half of 2560x1440, good. BUT Custom Width/Height still says 2560x1440. BUT if you restart the game now it says 1280x720, which is kinda true, but the Scale Factor is still 0.5 because you set it to 0.5, so now it's 0.5 from what and where and how the fuck.

Seriously, what the absolutely everloving fuck is this horseshit. I can't even. It's good and nice if you just want to play at your display resolution but good fucking luck tinkering with low resolutions.

I remember that biting me in the ass when I somehow managed to set my resolution to ultrawide 4K and was wondering why my FPS was getting too low in places. I genuinely don't know what the resolution scaling is supposed to achieve in GZDoom and I'm not at my PC to check if maybe the HUD size is affected compared to just changing the resolution. Can you disable vertical mouse player movement as a constant, but make holding Mouse2 engage it, like with mouse strafing?
Presently if I disable mouse player movement, it still works when I hold Mouse2, but only for the horizontal axis, unless I enable vertical sensitvity, which makes me slide around even when I'm not holding Mouse2, which sucks.

Snowfury, a single map set on a snowy castle. Played on Woof.
I'm not really used to Doom, I'm more of a Quake and Half-Life guy, so I don't really know how to critique the gameplay. I finished it on HMP, it was manageable for a relative noob and actually pretty fun.
The best part is the map itself though; it looks pretty good, has a fair bit of doomcute in it, and the snow effect looks convincing enough. Also the FF Tactics music is nice and fitting.
I recommend it, if only for the wintery feel. It may pair well with Angelic Aviary too, gotta try that.

On a somewhat related note, are berserk packs useful against tougher enemies in tight spaces? Are they not meant to be used like that, or do I have a skill issue?

Having a weird issue that I've not experienced before. When turning dynamic lights affecting sprites to off, I get weird colours like this. When I fire my pistol it goes away for the duration of the gunshot. Items are this colour too. Doom 1 shows all items as red instead...any advice? I played Sigil 2 with no issues and when going to any other wad now I get this. And when I boot back into Sigil 2 it now has this problem.

It was an encounter on that map I played. To be specific: at the end of the library section you get boxed in a tiny room with a revenant and a baron on either side. In the large room before that, there's a berserk pack in a high location. I'm confused by its placement, it didn't seem feasible to get to it before dealing with the horde in the lower parts and there wasn't much time left in it by the time I got back up to the exit into the tight room. I just assumed it was meant to be used there because it made the most sense.
