serious answer, and I'm trying to be objective here
SotN: rated best game of 1997, really a solid 8/10. it's too easy, gameplay wise there's nothing going on for half the game, and then before you know it it's over and all that's left is a shitty reverse castle. it started metroidvania, but didn't perfect it.
OoT: rated literally GOAT game, really a 9/10. travel is too slow, lots of padding dungeons aren't all that great, too many cryptic sidequests. if you think gaming ended here, try playing something but N64.
DKC2: rated best SNES game, really a 8/10. nothing new for a platformer, level design relies on gimmicks too much and shows its yuro roots.
FF6: rated nearly best RPG ever. really—the first half of the game is SHIT. there's virtually no gameplay, all of it feels like one giant cutscene with tutorials in between, the charactrers are broken to hell and the "exploration" is like one straight coridor. and no, the plot isn't "amazing", it jumps the shark like 10 times during it. it's everything worst about about JRPGs in one package. yes, it "gets good"—after an absolute atrocity movie game intro.
Earthbound: rated "hidden classic", really 7-8/10. the seinfeld-esque humor and atmosphere that mixes modern life and psychedelia is what makes it, but as an RPG it's shabby at best and gets tedious after the 2nd half. though it's a victim of its own fame and the Nintendo logo on its cover, no one ever called it GOAT before VC and Undertale.
Banjo-Kazooie: rated nearly 10/10, really a 7-8/10. too much collecting crap, too derivative of SM64, level design is every bad trend in DKC times 10.
dishonorary mentions: Castlevania 4, FF4, Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage 2, Tomb Raider, Crash 1-3, Conker—these are all 7-8 at most.

Myst. I like it, but it never deserved all the acclaim it got.
First off, it's almost painfully easy. The only puzzles I recall being tricky shit was that elevator you had to hit the button on, then exit and wait for it to lower, and the piano puzzle being tricky since the sliders are so fucking sensitive. People complain about the maze runner, but the game literally gives you sound cues, and there are only 4 sound cues. One for each direction. Shouldn't be THAT hard to figure out. The only other one I can think of that might throw people off is the compass puzzle, but it can be brute forced easily enough anyways. Quite possibly the easiest graphical adventure out there, besides that Inspector Gadget one.
Second, it wasn't all that groundbreaking in terms of graphics. The Journeyman Project came out prior and did the whole CGI graphical adventure thing already. Also had postage-stamp sized videos of real people too. The graphics of Myst weren't bad, but they weren't new.
Third, it severely lacks replayability. Many graphical adventure and even text adventure games prior to Myst had put effort into branching pathways and alternate solutions, giving the player reasons to play again. Without an inventory or alternate methods of solving the puzzles, the only choice the player has is which order they take on the different ages. Compare this to something like Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, where you could leave Germany by blimp then escaping in the attached plane, stealing a plane right off the airfield(requiring you to learn how to start a plane by reading the book in the library back in Venice and remembering the directions), or just grabbing a car and bribing your way past the guards, or getting the car and using Hitler's signature on a travel visa to get past all checkpoints.
I still enjoy firing up realMyst(original release, not the remastered version) and hanging out in the planetarium on Myst island, or the linking book room in the Stoneship age.

As much as I enjoy SotN, it's probably overrated. The gameplay and difficulty curves have problems. I think classicvanias are much better than the design that this game spawned.

WC3. Units are way too tanky, and that + upkeep really dampens the game. Most of the heroes are dwarfed by a few clearly OP ones. Best thing the game did was spawn DotA.

Ducktales. Overrated because people grew up with it. It's nothing special.

Earthbound for obvious reasons. There's just a gay personality type that just loves that game because it's le quirky. It's not bad but fags ride this game's cock too often.

Super Mario 64. It blew my mind when the first demo footage was released. By the time it finally came out, I'd already played 3D games on PC and I could see it for what it was - a boring platformer that's awkward to control. All credit to Nintendo for achieving what they did with no blueprint to work from, but it's just not good. It's the Super Mario Bros. 1 of the 3D games: not fun to control, not fun to play, but speedrunners still love it.

>It's the Super Mario Bros. 1 of the 3D games: not fun to control, not fun to play, but speedrunners still love it.
But SMB1 is the best 2d Mario game. All the useless gimmicks they kept tacking on in the sequels only made them worse.

It's not the lack of gimmicks that makes SMB1 bad, it's that it feels like shit to control. And if you dislike gimmicks, you must despise SM64.

Resident Evil 3. A major downgrade from the first two games with abysmal tedious level designs, yet is praised by all. Honestly I'd say the whole serious is pretty overrated, although the influence of the first game on the horror genre is important.

Ultima IV has tons of critical praise and awards, but I couldn't play it for very long before giving up out of tedium. I tried it a few years ago, not anywhere near release. Maybe I should have stuck with it, but that's the widest gap in my personal experience.
Next up would be Final Fantasy, which I finished somewhat recently. It was a colossal chore and had virtually no challenge nor payoff for my time. I'm not sure if it counts though, because I played the Dawn of Souls GBA remake rather than the original.
Of games I actually finished and were legitimately retro, probably Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. I also only played it for the first time about 5 years ago, but it was rough. Tons of tedium, despite some good features.

I love RE3 but the popular opinion towards it has always been negative, with people saying it's just a shitty spinoff and that CV is the real RE3, even though I think RE3 is better than CV

Anything Zelda or mario. I could maybe give a little on Zelda depending on the game but I legitimately don't understand why people like mario games.

>> No.10504259

>>10504225
I agree with the Mario part. Almost all of his games are solid but they're nothing special just a average platformer. If it didn't have Nintendo's name on it I bet it wouldn't be nearly as popular.
