The best part about these old PS1 graphics is that they are not hyper realistic. Lots of modern games don't leave room for your own imagination and hinder escapism I think.
I also like their pixelated "dirty" textures, which create the illusion of more geometrical detail.

It's guided by the technical limitations of the medium. Something with PS1 "aesthetics" is 32 bit 3D models that renders under the total of 90,000 textured tri's with a texture size limit of 256x256 with 4 or 8 bit color depth (16-256).

Like >>10503672 stated these limitations drastically changed between the start and the end of the consoles lifespan. You could easily get high quality models that look 6th gen on the PS1 with a bit of thought and trickery.

I kinda wish there was more of a homebrew scene for the PS1 with better tools. Because the PS1 is a good 'jack of all trades' system, with some 2D capabilities, early 3D capabilities, interesting 'mod tracker' music audio capabilities, FMV video , etc. Plus, the fact that PS1's are so much more accessible than the Saturn, given that there were like 90 million units sold and PS2 backwards compatibility.

I love the aesthetic in general but something about it's use in horror games feels so right. While it's been neat to see indie devs try to recreate the feeling of them I don't think they quite "get it" really. That balance of having a vague comprehension of the physical shape of what you're looking at but the textures and detail being so primitive that it keeps it relatively vague is a hard balance to reproduce.

The atmosphere is 10/10, but the adrenaline system prohibits you from ever pausing to take it in. You never get to stop to take in the ambience, which is a fucking crime because that's literally the game's strongest aspect.

Faggots like you are the ones obsessed with what's "objectively" good and you will be like this for every thing you take part in and if there is something that is not "objectively" good then you are forced to perform mental gymnastics to come up with why it's good instead of just liking something for what it is. Actually being old enough to have played the game when it was contemporary (shocking concept on nu-/vr/, I know), I can tell you right now it never looked like a real movie. More so than anything before, sure, but the difference was always clear.
In that same vein, I can tell you that even some of the base shader presets look close enough to the real thing at a normal viewing distance. When you're not leaning in to inspect every individual phosphor (something you'd never do when using a real CRT), the most obvious difference is the lack of glare.

>Do not worry about beating the game perfectly because you have to mess up and learn what is ok and not ok.
After dying countless times, I realized I can continue infinite times so its not that bad. Also downloaded VR missions to get the hang of the controls and game mechanics.

Ramblings of an idiot. How can you quantify an era of aesthetic? And entire thread of people waxing lyrical about what appeals to them versus one fat retard saying “stop liking things I don’t like”. That’s the observable dataset from my position. Why the fuck are you wasting precious internet tubes (you) farming? Go back to /v/ if you can’t provide anything of any worth. Even if you’d prefixed your gibberish with “I think” you wouldn’t have stood out like a moron.

> objectively good
What the fuck are the win conditions for something that’s “objectively good” in this discussion? Something you, personally, sign off on? Because I strongly suspect you are a cunt and being as far away from sharing your goddawful opinions is an objectively good quality to have.

You’re the one making the claim; use YOUR words to explain to the class why early 3D is “shit”. Lead by example.

By late 90s 2D wasn't exciting anymore. Same genres over and over again, same game mechanics over and over again. What do you want to play, 2D beat up number 223, this time the new mechanic is you need to HOLD the button for a super attack but other than that it's the same exact beat em up you've been playing for 10 years? Or a 3D game in a genre you've never even seen before, with mechanics you've never experienced before? Yeah it's easy to see why there's "fetishism" for early 3D. It was fucking exciting, it was a brand new world

Game were designed with the "errors" of CRT reproduction and video cables in mind.

See: Dithering. Play Dino Crisis or RE2. You are *not* supposed to see the dithering dots. The blurring from the CRT technology took care of that, and some games that used interlacing or dunno what was the name to do great visual effects like sonic.

It can be recreated tho'. The other anon is just an anal boomer.

>just feel the recent fetishism of early 3D and the dismissal of 2D
the people who fetishize early 3D are exactly the same who fetishize pixel 2D. Matter of fact almost all retro 3D games are lowkey pixelshit games.

And they are fucking right. Bilinear filtering and it's consequences have been a disaster for gaming graphics

I get what you're trying to show and yes the HD shot generally looks better but bilinear fuzzed native res without a CRT doesn't really give a genuine idea of what it looked like.

Damn you sure proved me wrong by posting something completely unrelated to the discussion.

Btw I was defending emulation there, retard.

>>10512284
Doesn't matter, jaggies are not a problem CRT display tricks could solve and the 6th gen was born during the LCD era that had "perfect" display so they just stopped using any visual techniques.
