10500589 No.10500589 [Reply] [Original]

I've tried the game out on PC recently because I found it in my library and I don't remember buying it. I am enjoying it a lot and soon will finish it, but because I have no frame of reference I would like to see anons' opinions on PC version currently available on Steam and if it's worse or better than the original Saturn version. Obviously I use Saturn mode, I consistently perform worse with HD graphics somehow.

>> No.10500598

The PC port is based on the PS2 port, made by chinese programmers.
The Saturn version is still the best one. Kind of a similar situation with Sonic CD where the best version is the original Sega CD one.
In the case of NiGHTS, the PS2/PC version has inaccurate controls.

>> No.10500710

Always play original. I recommend Medafen and a good analog controller.

I know they patched the controls for the Xbox360 version but I don't know if they did the same for the PC version.

Try playing at a 4:3 resolution as I find the widescreen mode too zoomed in. While you get to see more at the sides you seem to lose some verticality.

Here you can all thank me later, how to get NIGHTS into Dreams for free on steam (legally):
1)Have your steam account signed into your web browser already
2)Go to this link (webpage from sega's 60th anniv when they gave it away)
https://www.sega60th.com/register
3)Register (apparently you can put in any email you want because it doesn't verify)
4)Give it the permissions it asks for on steam
5)It should bug out and go to a url that starts with this: "localhost:3000/register"
6)Replace "localhost:3000" with "https://www.sega60th.com/"
7)Click the button on that webpage to finish registering
8)The game should be in your steam library at this point

ENJOY ANONS!

There's nothing wrong with the PC version that can't be fixed with mods (aside from a bug on certain graphics cards that slows the game down to a halt any time you get the powerup). The bigger issue is that the game's movement system was designed with the Saturn 3D Controller in mind, so it doesn't feel quite right on anything else.

Idk if "saturn mode" fixes this but the one time I pirated the steam version and gave it a go it was really jarring immediately noticing there's many parts where you see more of the level than you're supposed to like often catching in the background that purple glowie shit that limits the level on foot. Save for rare ocasions where you catch a very brief glimpse, you don't ever see it in the original when you're in flight mode.

Also the backgrounds have definitely been tampered with and stretched. For example pic related, that tacked on green lake(?)/grass(?) you see during this section in the remake doesn't exist at all in the original.

This sort of aesthetic fuckery is enough for me to dismiss the whole thing when the original is perfectly playable as is.

What happened is that they made the backgrounds into skyboxes in the remake, versus the flat image in the original. The lake is an additional part of the background that covers the bottom of the skybox, but it's jarring for a level that's supposed to be a desert.

What I found out was that all of these Sonic Team games are janky, frustrating, cryptic messes being blindly heralded by masochistic SEGA autists. In the end, as sad as it is to say, Sonic is still the best thing Sonic Team ever came up with. First and foremost Nights is about maneuverability and timing which the bosses do obviously test. Through the levels there are little enemies that make you waste time, against most if you bump into without charging it locks you into grabbing them until you throw them. This also happens against those secret boxes of blue chips - you lock in grabbing then dash to break them. This is a very baseline mechanic that permeates the entire game and the basic way enemies are dispatched so naturally it carries over into the bosses
The other slightly more advanced ways you can dispatch enemies in the levels is by looping around them or just dashing

The Dragon is literally the only interactable element in the stage, if you try the tail you get hurt. If you try the face it locks the grab and you throw it just like the enemies you bumped into during the stage. It breaks and screams and if you do it a few times you'll notice the tail gets smaller. Is that really not enough feedback to know youre doing something right and should keep at it?
With the cat there are 2 elements to the stage: the cat and the mice. the first natural instict may be to go for the cat but you soon find you can't reach it. as you do it you realize theres 2 states to the mice - static and detonating. you have a go at the static ones, try a grab or dash and nothing happens so you go to the detonating ones and realize you can dash them. Since there's a very finite amount it's probably a good idea to work on dispatching them especially since if you dont they detonate and hurt you

Dragon - grab and throw(you can loop the tail if you know what youre doing)
Cat - dash the mice until you can grab and throw the cat
Reala - grab and dash fails so you paraloop
Bunny - grab and throw
Pirana - use the fish to shoot you(this mechanic echoes those green things in the stages that also shoot you)
Joker - grab and throw
Final - grab and throw

its not mario64 where bowser has nothing to do with the game mechanics

Yeah, the mice boss was challenging in a good way once you understand how the fight works. The problem is at the beggining, when you don't know how the fight works. Bosses don't even have a hit point UI, so it's not easy to tell if you're progressing or not. Also, I believe that you need to conserve some dash energy before the mice boss or you'll be helpless, which sucks. These boss fights would be saved if only the hints were clearer, ah well.

At least Bowser isn't a timed fight iirc, you can experiment as much as you want there.

saturn nights+christmas > modded hd pc port > ps2 > hd console ports

pc mods fix the hd lighting and add 60 fps which is awesome.
you miss out on sonic into dreams and 2 player versus, along with some menu nostalgia.

hd still has inaccuracies when it comes to gameplay however.
wall collisions are different
the floating ideya captures can be at abnormal heights
items have smaller hitboxes
nights is slower and his speed changing momentum isn't accurate
link timing is shorter and makes some scores harder
child chain speed jumping is gone
air brake has to be held, which alters brake loops
enemy ai has differences/bugs and can be in weird places

What an amazingly retarded post. If this wasn't such a bot-like reply, I would've assumed you didn't even read my post.
If you have nothing of value to say about the topic on hand, I think it's better if you just don't post anything lest you get owned for being a retard.

I didn't know that was still going on. That's exactly how I got my copy years ago and I ended up loving the game.

Hopefully one day the Saturn original gets decompiled as free/libre & open-source software (F/LOSS) & an enhanced source port to PC.

NTA, but the 2011 remake made certain hazards harder for no reason and some time travelling spots don't work as well as they did in the original. The new physics don't mesh too well with some sections of the levels. Some of the game screens were made unskipabble for no reason. Overall, all the new stuff is cool, but I think the original is less frustrating. It also sucks that they didn't add a restart button to this game, this game needed it (even the NA version allows you to restart a level by pausing and pressing a button).
