that makes me think of how the metroid prime remasters have less good lighting. The shots in the gc/wii originals have a lighting effect that follows them and lights up terrain in a small area, the remake doesn't. The devs said it's something about how the gc handled lighting making that easy.

>Doom's music is MIDI-based. This means that the music can sound vastly different depending on the hardware used to play it. Most PCs in the '90s played back Doom's music using low quality FM synthesis but superior options were available. One example is the Roland Sound Canvas SC-55, a piece of professional MIDI synthesis hardware that was originally used by Bobby Prince to compose Doom's music. For this reason, the SC-55 is sometimes considered the "canonical" playback format for Doom's music.

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/131340-does-anyone-know-what-tools-bobby-prince-used-to-make-music-for-doom/
>Also, keep in mind that he used a Roland SC-55mkII (along with a Ensoniq EPS) when composing the ost, so he made it with that module hardware in mind

https://equipboard.com/pros/bobby-prince
>"Own a part of video game history! This Roland (aka Edirol) SC-88 Pro was used to rough out much of the music I wrote for early computer games, including Doom, Duke Nukem, Rise of the Triad and many more.
>The SC-88 Pro has all of the iconic sounds of the SC-55, and many more! It is compatible with all MIDI files composed on the SC-55 -- it has an SC-55 Map button. It was designed to be a complete orchestra/band in one unit, with numerous digital effects.

Doom is Wolfenstein's child. Wolfenstein is Hovertank 3D's child. Who fucking cares about them? Doom introduced the shitty breadcrumb of the FPS formula and games like Build ones iterated on it, making it better and better until culminating in the perfect shooter that is Half-Life. Doom's """gameplay process""" didn't age well and is good only for historical and archaeological purposes. Anyone who still unironically plays it and even makes new levels for it made them might be irreversibly mentally ill. Given that Doom's current community consists predominantly of trannies and amerilards, it's very likely true. Anyone who could make Doom's gameplay better (mentally healthy people) already moved on to create original games instead of sucking and jerking an outdated game over and over.

Half-Life achieved just as much, if not more fame than Doom, and unlike Doom this fame is well-deserved. Doom, just like Isaac Newton, belongs to the history books, so that people knew it as the archaic game that paved the way for much superior successors. Its gameplay design and setting screams early nineties jank, while Half-Life is timeless and believable in both 1998 and 2023. If you show Half-Life to anyone I can guarantee you that this person will be engrossed by the level of atmosphere that not even modern videogames manage to reach, and if they drop the game then that says more about their IQ and attention span than about Half-Life. I was born like a week from Wolfenstein 3D, so I was in diapers at the time of Doom, but even though I thought Quake 2, Terminator : Future Shock, and Goldeneye were all cool games as a little lad, Doom, which was older and sort of less advanced, was something else.

I catch a glimpse of it first when I'm maybe 7, and woah, there's a game I had never seen before. Doom 2? My brother ushers me out of the room and tells my mom I can't play it or watch, it's too violent, way more violent than Quake 2. The images burn into my mind instantly though, it's got cool guns with powerful muzzleflashes, but it also has a lot of occult and satanic imagery, the enemies aren't robots, cyborgs, aliens, or terrorists, they're evil demons from hell (and sometimes also cyborgs), and dead soldiers possessed by evil spirits.
I was mad into Diablo, which I was also way too young to play, so naturally a combination of sci-fi shooter action with satanic demon enemies captivated me instantly, and the detailed gore was fascinating, if also disgusting.

Funnily enough, the graphics was one of the things impressing me the most. I thought it was weird that you couldn't look up or down, but the guns and monsters looked super-realistic to me, with their photorealistic lighting and shading, and I had never seen that before, so to me, Doom 2 had better graphics than Goldeneye and Quake 2.
I was really too little to get any kind of good grasp on the gameplay or appreciating that aspect, but the visuals and music had me coming back repeatedly. It was a spooky and intimidating game, even with cheats, even playing with Simpsons Doom, which is what I managed to haggle as a deal with my brother.
The Simpsons was really funny to me, even if I barely understood that either at that age, so I got a lot of enjoyment out of that setup, but because regular Doom 2 was so cool to me, I would frequently go behind my brother's back and play it normal.

I would eventually come back to games like Doom as a teenager, after my brother convinced/strongarmed me into trying to play through Half-Life without cheats for once, which was an eye opener. That was SO much more fucking fun than playing with cheats, what else have I missed out on? Duke Nukem 3D turned out to be really great too, and eventually I come back to Doom once again, but playing through it legit this time, and it wasn't just cool to look at and listen to, it was cool to play as well.

At the time, I often thought so, sometimes for reasons exactly like that, but growing up more and being less of an obnoxious little crybaby shit, I came to become increasingly good friends with him. He'd show me all kinds of cool movies and games which I really was still kind of too young for, but which I was far more emotionally and intellectually equipped to both handle and appreciate.
I kinda thought horror movies would not be for me, after all, why would I want to be scared? But he showed me Halloween, and it was maybe slightly scary, but more importantly it was exciting and thrilling, a little bit like Terminator but without the gunfighting and explosions.

I didn't get all my tastes from my brother, but he opened my eyes to a hell of a lot, and really the guy's a fucking rock, he's been there for me and helped me with so much, I really don't think I could ever repay all his kindness, but I'll try to whenever I can.

His levels are liked, but it varies, there's no one big consensus beyond that. Some think his levels are the best ones, some even arguing that his levels are the only good ones, and a rare few will even extend that to arguing that if a Doom level wasn't made by him, it's impossible for it to be good. There's all kinds of people.

Personally, I think that E1 is slightly overrated, because Romero does WAY better levels in E4 and Doom 2 by an enormous margin.
Sigil is a lot like if Romero made E4 all by himself, with the mean difficulty to match, and while a few people were overwhelmed with seething that he didn't just make another Knee Deep In The Dead, I thought it was a great little set of levels which makes the most out of the first game's comparably smaller and simpler bestiary. Nothing revolutionary in terms of design, but extremely competent.

I expect the same from Sigil 2.

Okay so there is a 12 byte header at the start of the file which identifies its type then tells you the number of entries and location of a directory. You seek to that location then read the given number of 16-byte entries. Each entry specifies the start, length, and name of the item of data. So for each item you want, you can seek to its start, and read that many bytes.

Ideally, yeah. You should absolutely, 100%, play at least one episode vanilla before even dreaming of installing any gameplay mods. For maps, it's not as important but still, play vanilla at least once, that way you can appreciate mods properly and will understand the changes made by them.

IMO play E1 E2 E3 then as much of Doom II as you can stomach to learn the game (some people get super bored of Doom II, it can be an acquired taste). Skip Ultimate Doom E4 until you are more practiced.

Which, inevitably, are the best ones.

Man it's funny, I had to look up the level author lists again, it's been a while, wanted to know who to give credit to and who to throw shade at. American McGee did Quake DM4 which is my favorite deathmatch map ever, and I was gonna say maybe it was on accident cause it's a "blue" map and all those blue maps in ep4 were a total slog, but no actually American's levels were alright, if a bit concept-heavy. All that ep4 shit was... Sandy. lol.

Props to Willits though, Romero did (still Quake) E1M1 which is great as always but I also really love E1M2-5, love the natural feel of them and they're great to deathmatch on as well. Servers that would just run the 1-5 rotation instead of the actual DM maps were tons of fun, they were especially great once grappling hook play took off.

Interestingly, Willits also did E4M1 though, which I always thought felt notably different from the other E*M1s (he really likes water, huh?). I will say something nice about Sandy though, the lighting in E4M2 Tower of Despair is top notch, that room you drop into with the shammie and all the crisscrossing beams is the iconic symbol of Quake's lighting style in my mind. All things being considered it really is an interesting quirk of these games that we know who the authors of the individual maps were and care about it so much and can recognize their styles and trends. That kind of shit sure doesn't exist anymore in modern gaming.

If you think Doom is "boring" its probably not your thing and never will be. Why come into a thread celebrating its 30th birthday, knowing that there's a large subculture that cares a lot about it, and get all shitty? You could just like, not - and be totally fine. You should consider not doing what you're doing, because its lame, and gay.

These Anons are coming into a 30th Birthday Doom thread and saying contrarian things for the express purpose of annoying others in the hopes they will click on their post and reply to them, either with confusion, or more vitriol.

Yes, type this command into the console (bring up the console by pressing tab), then change the number. So for example type fluid_reverb_level 0.20

In addition, here's an edited soundfont I made that adds reverb to the drums ad makes them sound way better instead of that flat midi sound. There's a video there so you can see what it sounds like.

Lemme help you.
https://files.catbox.moe/e6eiz8.zip

I put together a quick Doom starter pack.
>Woof sourceport, v.12.0.0 (plays classic, can also play Boom and MBF21 format levels, which is what a lot of people make these days)
>comes with Doom.wad, Doom2.wad, TNT.wad, and Plutonia.wad (the last two are like standalone expansions to two)
>comes with the spritefix patches and blood color patches
>has stuff like 'screen recoil' enabled by default, which isn't in the original game, but I copied off of my config and I like it, turn it off if you don't
>also an .sf2 file which imitates the Roland Sound Canvas 55, the machine which Doom's music was composed around
>binds already set up for WASD+Mouse and all, but setting up a gamepad is easy if you want that
>Doom plays pretty well with dual analog sticks, you can even use the left side of a gamepad and a mouse if you really want

Also added in DoomLauncher, which is a program that helps a lot with handling files. You tell DoomLauncher where you unzipped Woof, and then you add whatever .wad files or .deh files you want available.
So starting DoomLauncher and selecting say, Plutonia.wad, you then select Woof 12.0.0 as your port, and then you could add other files into the current load order, perhaps that one .wad which adds new music for Plutonia's levels, and then you press play. The launcher will remember your choices for Plutonia.wad too.

Oh yeah, Plutonia on UV is not where I would go as a novice, it's really good, but it's also designed for people who beat Doom 2 on UV and thought it wasn't challenging enough.
One of the devs described Plutonia as its first map starting with a level of difficulty comparable to Doom 2's late game, and then escalating to harder and harder as it goes.

It does have difficulty levels implemented though, so you could try a lower difficulty.

>can i get an autistic explanation on how hitscan enemies work?
So the basic way a hitscan works is when the enemy fires, the weapon traces a trajectory in front of the player and instantly affects whatever the line intersects with first. This differs from a projectile weapon, whose bullets are independent data objects with a known position and speed that the game actively tracks and checks against potential collisions.

Put simply, when a hitscan enemy fires its gun, if it was going to hit you, it hits you at the exact microsecond they fire since there's no projectile to miss and it's more like a lazer. This is the cultists in Blood are so deadly because their guns are all hitscan weapons and they react to you extremely fast which means you don't dodge their shots, they just have to miss you.

The clay model for the Baron Of Hell.

What Adrian Carmack would do is coat a posable wood art doll in clay, and then sculpt it. Putting it in front of a white screen and lighting it with a spotlight, they'd get shots of all eight directions with the video camera they were using, and that way get a very consistent graphic with a photorealistic kind of lighting.
But oops, the spotlight warms up the clay, and these shitty wood dolls have extremely limited range, so these ad-hoc claymation figures occasionally fell apart when they were using them, requiring repairs (which leads to a few subtle irregularities for some frames).

Overall, though the end results were good, this was really time consuming and bothersome, which is why they hire a professional for an alternative approach.

Don Ivan Punchatz was the artist they hired to paint the cover for Doom. When he learned of their troubles with their models, he suggested they'd hire his son, who worked with puppets and miniatures for movies and other stuff. So they did.

Gregor Punchatz would sculpt pure clay figures based on Adrian Carmack's design drawings, and then make a casting mold of each of them. With those molds, he sprayed the insides with foam latex, which once dried were fitted to a fully posable steel armature, then the latex skin was painted.
These held up for posing and lighting, but latex being latex, a lot of these skins have rotted and degraded away over the years.

That said, Gregor Punchatz still had the casting molds stashed away in his garage in Texas, and a year or so back he dug them out, cleaned off the dust and spiderwebs, and made models with them which he scanned. He's been working away at modified digital versions of the models as well, and he decided he would make a clay model sculpture based on the demon on the cover art his late father painted so long ago.

Clay models by Adrian Carmack:
>Doomguy
>Zombies made by retouching, Chaingunner by extensive modifying and retouching
>Baron Of Hell, Hell Knight as a recoloring
>Cyberdemon

Latex skinned models by Gregor Punchatz:
>Spider Mastermind, Arachnotron as a scaled down and retouched variant
>Mancubus
>Revenant (differed significantly from Adrian's original concept, would then also be considerably retouched as the gritty meaty texture did not translate well to a low resolution)
>Arch-Vile
Pictured, unused demon. This design would be reused by Midway for their version of the Pinky in Doom 64.

Other:
>Cacodemon was painted by hand in Deluxe Paint II
>Pain Elemental was based on the Caco, with thickened Imp arms, Cyberdemon horns, and an early Invisibility powerup as a base for the eye, Lost Soul inside its mouth is actually made from the unused frames for a cut "Blob Monster"
>Pinky was painted by hand, would see a considerable redraw using a capture of a Jurassic Park dinosaur toy to reference its legs
>Imp was in part painted by hand, using some of the used and unused Doomguy frames as a base
>Lost Soul was made from a digitized medschool skull model, saw considerable redrawing
>Icon Of Sin was originally a pencil sketch by Adrian, which was used for a texture in the first game, then saw significant editing to make Doom 2's final boss
>SS Trooper was drawn by hand in DP2 by Adrian back during Wolfenstein 3D's development

Unused and unfinished frame for the Arch-Vile.
One of the things which Gregor Punchatz didn't quite account for was resolution, which is why even though he was faithful to the face which Adrian had drawn, this doesn't convey on the finished sprite.
This results in a more skeletal looking face for the final sprites (which I personally like more than the actual intended design), and this is why the Arch-Vile marble wall relief, which is made from that sketch, doesn't look like the actual sprite.

Punchatz describes how when he was sculpting out the Arch-Vile, he was doing so while having the movie Pumpkinhead playing on VHS in the background, and I'd say that the inspiration for the Arch-Vile's body is telling.

A quirk on the Arch-Vile is that his lower legs are actually too short for his body, which Punchatz said he regrets, and the reworked digital model instead has digitigrade legs much like Pumpkinhead here, but I think the awkward anatomy works in their favor. The Archie is by far the spookiest monster design in the entire series, he's sinister, weird, and fast.

How the Revenant looked before they decided to retouch him. The detailed meaty texture doesn't translate well at the game's resolution, so they opt to repaint him to a more bare skeleton.

It's more that they were meaty skeletons, the notion was always that they were something reanimated (hence the name). The initial sketch on paper here is a tall and lanky fuck with armor and both an SSG and whatever this gun arm is.
At some point they decide on giving him a skull head instead, and with the model not quite working out, they retouch him to a plain skeleton with some gore on him.

I recall Romero said that he really wanted something like the Revenant in the game because he though it would be funny as fuck, whether he meant the original concept or what it turned into, I don't know.

Pic related is two closeup shots of the actual model, which is at display at iD's office, among some other stuff like this. The armor piece is absent in photos some time after the release of Doom 2, and has been that way for a long time, I'm not sure if it broke or they lost it or whatever.
I think the big skeleton covered in gore and veins like this is actually a pretty cool design, but this kind of fine detail is difficult to translate and convey at the intended scale and resolution, so I can see why they just painted over it.
