While it's tempting to give it an element of some kind, the plan was all weapons powered by the silver mana (Pistol, Shotgun, Chaingun) to just fire various flavors of metal. Though the Dreadbolt's projectiles explode on impact, I don't quite count that.

The gold mana (SSG, RL, and Plasma gun) is where the elements come in. Though thinking about it, I don't think angry ghosts count as an element from the Wrathcaster. Damn.

Ultimately I'd prefer to just keep the Chaingun as a metal spewing bullethose.

Any good Doom wads that encourage slow play? I really like E1M2 and those sections in the dark where you can creep around and one tap dudes just as you go around a corner. Sure you can go fast through any Doom level if you want, but sometimes it's fun to just go slow and pretend you're playing a stealther. Something that keeps the weapons and monster types on the low end. The first map of NERVE.wad is kinda good for that too, you can poke around and explore and admire the architecture between each fight.

I'm not really feeling Eviternity 2.
For some reason it makes my potato chug at times, which is just weird but maybe that's DSDA. Nugget doesn't have that issue but I can't currently get that to work with Eviternity 2. Also the maps aren't as good. They're kind of confusing and promote aimless wandering until you encounter something you haven't done yet. The very first map is the worst offender so far, being a huge and empty level with a single monster in the middle for shits and giggles I guess? Then again its just released, and patches will obviously be on the way.

I think the only major issue I ever had with Cacowards was them keeping the "runner ups" to a small column on the right side of the window back in 2018 through to 2020, despite having the cacowards now taking up the full browser window, making such mentions easy to miss compared to the more compact view of the older cacowards. It was almost 3AM when I wrote the other one and maybe I didn't explain it properly. What I meant by "fire themed" is have it's animations show how fast and hot the weapon gets when firing by have it get visibly hot as it spins up, with the barrel tips glowing red and then orange and maybe have some of the shots with a tracer effect of the same colour.
Also now that I'm not sleepy as fuck, it seems a bit too high tech to be gothic-styled, maybe removing some of the lights and making the yellow a bit orangeish to more resemble brass instead of whatever alloy that tries to replicate.

Yeah, the handle is super chunky with that bar on the front to protect the hand it seems. It doesn't look tike there's space for fingers in there.

Having played countless Boom levels in GzDoom which use said VooDoo Scripting, and having also made some Boom and MBF21 levels myself, which I made sure to test in both GzDoom and PrBoom+ (then Woof and DSDA), just to be sure, I will argue that this is not true at all.

What IS true is that GzDoom handles conveyors a little bit differently, and that this CAN introduce problems, but it's not guaranteed to do so, nor is it guaranteed to be a severe problem either. In one of my levels, I made a mildly complex VooDoo script, and I did actually notice that it behaved slightly differently in GzDoom, but it did not break my map, the "script" just executed a bit slower.
If you are playing with some sort of gameplay mod for GzDoom which alters the physical properties of the player though, then that can outright break some VooDoo setups, but that's very much a given, which is also very preventable.

And one equally trivial way to perform that research is to straight-up try the source port with a classic WAD you enjoy and see if anything changes. Worst case scenario, you now have an informed reason for avoiding the port in the future, but you still played a WAD you enjoy for some time.
It's not like somebody trying to convince you to learn a new programming language, or anything that takes a non-arbitrary length of time investment to see some return. It's downloading and launching a program, maybe with some configuration for your WAD of choice. Probably 15 minutes tops. You could test drive a dozen ports in an afternoon at that rate, and maybe find something unique about each of them in doing so. Even sampling a dozen flavors of ice cream carries a heavier burden than that, since you can't delete calories from your body as easily as a folder from your PC.

.deh files are specifically for Vanilla Doom which needs an external tool to actually patch the EXE with the dehacked changes.
Chocolate Doom also needs them via a command line option.
Every other more advanced port loads a DEHACKED lump from inside the wad itself. (even Crispy Doom)
Often the .deh version is more limited than the version inside the WAD (such as abbreviated map titles).
So in short, for gzdoom, you don't need the .deh files, unless the WAD has no DEHACKED lump inside. 99% of wads do though.

Nah. Freelook with no autoaim allows you to be more precise with weapons, which makes things easier. Especially true with rocket launcher, as you'll have more control of where the rocket is going.

Yeah, this is how I play these days.
I think pistol starting is important, as it lets you experience a map the way the mapper intended, but difficulty level? That's just subjective and I prefer to have fun over getting my balls roasted. At least until I git gud.
