Don't ask me to explain it as I don't fully understand it myself. At some point I just started playing SMB1 way more often than 3. Judging by youtube, streaming and speedrun content, it looks like most other people have as well.

Actually, it has extraneous fluff like music, decorative graphics (like that hill and bush in the OP picture) and cutscenes ("Your princess is..."). Just another extravagant movie game.

I only finished the All-Stars version from start to finish, I can only finish the OG one by using all of the warps I can, so in 1-2 and 4-2, while going by all of World 8. I love it, but I suck at it, just being able to finish with warping, and saving in the All-Stars version, took me a lot of time and effort... I still did it though, it only took me what? 20 years to pull it off? Anyways, I saved Peach, so it's fine.

P.S. Peach is cute! CUTE!

I try to get all of the 1-UPs I get, I just lose them a lot more often than I find them, so I get a Game Over anyways. I just really suck at Mario.

>>10489860
It does? Well, that kind of changes things a bit, I've always avoided the code because it felt like even more of a cheat than warping, but if the manual encourages then that's something else.

>>10489875
It really does, besides saving, continues are what make the All-Stars version so much more doable.

SMB1's perfection is that it has everything you need for a great platforming experience and not a single thing more. You can just focus on what's directly to the right of Mario and get into a great state of flow, which is addictive.
SMB3 has more novelty but once the novelty wears off the added complexity just makes the platformer more puzzler-like, which isn't necessarily bad but you can no longer play it purely by feel.

>> No.10491557

>> No.10491718

>>10490547
This is a pretty good summation. SMB is just a pure platformer. Just go to the fucking right, that's really all there is to it. I prefer 3 for the variety of the levels and themed worlds, but SMB is still a damn fine game.

For some reason after like 15 years I decided to play this and Mario 3 with a keyboard again. This played way better with a keyboard than 3 did. Maybe I had more hours playing it on keyboard than 3 and it's been stored in my muscle memory all this time idk.

as much as I like the idea of lives and gameovers really mattering smb1 is so stingy with lives that it does borderline feel unintended or undeveloped. like a single death on an early stage will be curtains for your run if you haven't memorized the handful of 1up spawns or use an infinite cheat.

>>10491873
I feel the same way, and this is one of the worst cases because Mario is so fragile, a single touch of an enemy can take away one of your lives, so getting more of them more often is a priority in an adventure that barely has them... it's why I'm only using warps and I don't feel bad about it...

>> No.10492491

>>10492290
There's your mistake. Warping means you're missing heaps of 1ups on the easier stages. Even if you don't find them all you still rack up a bunch of lives from coins. At least play it straight until the second warp zone, but even then you're just skipping half the game and what's even the point in playing?

What do you mean? The point... is to save the princess, anon. No matter what it takes, using all of the resources given to you, without outside ones like Game Genie and such, it's ALL for the sake of... protecting that smile, Peach's smile.

P.S. Jokes aside, I get your point though, and it's mostly due to me enjoying the mechanics and all, but not enough to play the whole thing through.

What you can do when you get to World 4 is use the warp in 4-2 to get into World 8 and at least try to finish those last few levels to finish the adventure and save Peach, World 8 is a pain, but also a nice burst of challenge after you get the hang of it better and remember the layouts...
