i grew up with the 8bit ones then moved onto the 16bits. I remember the last Sonic game i got was Sonic 3d. For some reason i was a massive snowflake and always asked my folks for the spinoff sonics, so i had sonic pinball, Sonic tetris and Sonic 3d. While i rented the main series.
I never got over the story of Sonic and knuckles ending abruptly, i always expected a Sonic 4 that would continue the death egg plot. Thats why i dropped the series,

Not really. Sonic has just become too much a part of pop culture multi media. Just like there's always going to be some new TMNT or Transformers crap, Sonic has joined that rank.

It's sad his games are now almost just one piece of that rather than a focal point, but the fate of Sega as a whole has become that sadly. But it's almost true of most of the A list names of retro gaming too other than Nintendo and their Disney-like corporate presence and cultish brand obsession. Look what happened to Capcom, once a monolith synonymous with quality, now just "the Street Fighter makers". But that's why modern gaming sucks dick, and why people like me only play retro games. Gaming truly died when arcades died out, the spirit was gone, but that can be said of most culture going forward from the 00s as well. Games, animation, films, comic books, popular music, all of these things either became soulless, or had their last hurrah in the 00s with very few exceptions of something new being genuinely inspired.

I'd even go as far as saying that we're in a bit of a Sonic Renaissance. We have successful movies, a 3rd film on the horizon, aNetflix show with a few seasons that's still going, a 2D hit (Mania) and a few 2D compilations that are selling well, along with Superstars which sold well too and doesn't have bad reception, also Frontiers which is really the only 3D Sonic since Adventure 2 that's sort of captured the physics and momentum from the classics, with spindash jumping and all, and the IDW comics are going strong, way stronger than the Archie comics were at the end of their run...

It's not a bad time to be a Sonic fan, as someone who's been on this ship since the start, there are way worse eras I can recall, this is probably one of the better ones, and what's best is that... the future's looking somewhat bright for Sonic, and I haven't been able to say that in quite a long time.

Indeed, of course SEGA is SEGA and could completely mess it all up, maybe the 3rd film ends up mediocre or bad, the Netflix show gets cancelled, the comics lose popularity and the writing gets worse, Superstars had mixed reception already and there's no guarantee they'll actually built up properly on what Frontiers established... it could all still happen.

I wouldn't be surprised, it's SEGA, but as you've said we're better off than in the early 2000's. If they managed to top THAT period of Sonic, then they might aswell pull the plug on everything.
