Quesrion:

Has there ever been a piece of consumer technology that was phased out this quickly before? CRT TVs were phased out in a matter of several years. In like 8 years after Flat panel TVs were introduced in 2008, most CRTs was totally gone by 2016.

Meanwhile we still have radios. We still have mp3 players. We still have most electronics from when we were kids. Hell, freaking vinyl records have made a comeback again!

Why are CRTs the only piece of technology that got phased out so quickly??

So bizarre.

A lot of the stamping and tooling used to make such large glass tubes are lost or destroyed, and the lead glass neck is basically illegal to make in most countries.
>Why are CRTs the only piece of technology that got phased out so quickly??
Supply and demand. People were happy to throw out their sub-480i displays with a widescreen 720p TV that is half the weight. Unless there is enough of a demand to warrant the upfront cost of making a production line from scratch, nobody will do CRTs again.
It's a shame that we never did get the true sequel, surface-conduction electron-emitter displays (SED).

“In a general sense, an SED consists of a matrix of tiny cathode ray tubes, each "tube" forming a single sub-pixel on the screen, grouped in threes to form red-green-blue (RGB) pixels.”
At best, this means getting digital-like geometry uniform of pixels with the pros of CRT tech (infinite contrast, instant frame response). We'll never know what the actual end result would have looked like.

The giant hole on top of the case goes without saying ankn. It's been smashed, but obviously it's a rare thing to see that level of damage.

For me, I've seen too many CRTs for sale online and Thrift stores where any plastic door or plastic bits are ALWAYS broken off. It's way too common in my area, and I get so annoyed seeing it. It just shows a lack of care, and made it tough for me when I was looking to get a few used, but decent condition CRTs.

I can replace flybacks and, do cap kit replacements. But finding a replacement plastic door for a specific 1998 16 inch Toshiba CRT? What a pain in the ass. It's nearly impossible. No one sells that kind of thing.

Well generally the start of the flat panel era commercially is taken as 1997 anyways. Flat CRT TVs were fucking popularized just to look less obsolete beside plasma TVs and LCDs. Absolutely no one who was over 3 years old in the mid-00s thinks flat panels didn't show up until after the Xbox 360 was on the market, that's blatantly retarded.

I was 12 in the year 2000 and I only know one person who had an lcd or plasma tv before 2009. Everyone else, including me, had either rptvs or tubes. Hell, the first time I saw a flat crt screen was probably 2006 or 2007; that in itself was pretty glorious since it was also running component video. Working class people stuck with old shit.

>most people
Most people still don't have smart speakers and spotify accounts which is why radios and CDs are still being sold. There's absolutely no relevant comparison based on when LCDs were adopted by "most people", it's already over at that point. If you want another example of why you kids are dumb in more than one way, DVD players went on the market in 1996, were basically "what the fuck is a DVD player" when the PS2 was announced in 1999, finally overtook VHS in 2003, and once it had reached that point killed it so fucking dead they stopped releasing movies on VHS entirely in 2006.
