Lanes are interesting, it filters some. I do prefer KoF gameplay to FF in part because of it but I have no problem with it, it's just not as much what I'm used to.

When it comes to that though, it's not because people couldn't have liked it had they given it more of a chance, it's just because SNK dropped the ball in getting games to the masses, so a lot of people didn't play the games as much. There were hardly any SNK fighters available on home consoles anybody actually had like SNES, Genesis, and Playstation which severely limited their playerbase unlike SF and MK.

My big issue with Real Bout is the simplified moveset. Only three normal attack buttons is just too few for a 2d fighting game. Lane switch should have been A+B, and the player could have the standard four attacks.

Really, the gameplay style of the Real Bout games is so Street Fighter-y that it needed a full six button layout. This was actually possible on the Neo Geo but it would not have fit the system wiring standard, thus making the game not as easily interchanged with other Neo titles.

RBS isn't even the third best Fatal Fury game
Even regarding just planes, RB1's system is a lot more interesting, while RB2's is refined and done well. RBS's two full planes don't give you that many options besides plane abuse with C attacks, which is why Billy in particular is so strong

I feel like in pretty much every Fatal Fury games Terry is a good option. He's got a nice array of special moves and they're not very hard to perform if you've ever played other 2D fighters before, but they also deviate from the shoto formula so it's a little unique.

As long as I'm here, Krauser's "Blood is thick, but syrup is thicker" line also makes sense in a weird way. The Japanese line is "It seems blood will tell after all", talking about how Geese and Krauser are half-brothers. The English flips that around and has Krauser point out that while blood is thick, there are a lot thicker things out there. It's goofy as all hell, but there is a point there.

I know it's broken for some characters like Duck but I always found the way RBS handled plane switching the most fluid and useful, switching planes is faster than in FFS and you can do anything from either lane without the game automatically pushing you back to the front lane after a few seconds like in RB2
