Hey guys, know any cool shmups for consoles/handhelds/computers/not Dreamcast?

Post'em here.

Much like my retro platformer thread I want to make a list of recommended shmups that are underrated, obscure or just interesting.

>You can find the list I made for platformer thread here:

This is a neat little PS1 shmup called Harmful Park. It's pretty weird. You play as these two girls in some machine and your different guns are potato, pie, ice cream, and jerry (whatever that is). The levels are all set in an amusement park, so it's interesting. I'd say it's worth checking out.

Air Zonk isn't obscure by any means, but it's often overlooked because of it's platform. Also has a fantastic soundtrack:

Also, the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 has a TON of obscure shmups, some better than others. >>1048371 is a great example, just like Nexzr, Sinistron/Violent Soldier, Rayxanber II/III, Soldier Blade and Spriggan, amongst others.

Uchuu Keibitai SDF is a really great Famicom-exclusive shmup developed by HAL. Much like Konami's Crisis Force it uses a special chip, but comes up much less than that other game or Summer Carnival Recca 92. Definitely check it out if you get a chance to, it's right up there with those two games and Gun Nac.

it does belong here, because it's definitely underrated, but there's a good reason for that, it was bad

I have extremely mixed feelings about it, because even though it sucked, it had a certain atmosphere about it that was typical of all snes shovelware. certain things done very well, and certain things done poorly. it was a time period when even really shitty games seemed pretty special just because old ideas were being juiced up with more bells and whistles

I remember copying it and then immediately deleting it because I was running low on floppies

still, thanks for reminding me

I got it at a fleamarket and ive never heard of it. I noticed it was made by square, so i thought it might be an rpg, but it's a shmup.

>> No.1052620

>>1052572
It's a good game.
Acts just like an overhead shmup. Bonuses come in the form of faster shooting, faster speed and more powerful "bullets". They are found by destroying various environment obstacles (walls and fences and the such). If I remember correctly, nearly everything can be destroyed on screen. Enemies also appear out of things you destroy, this makes it impossible to simply spam fire at point blank range on items, lest you die.

All in all it is a pretty good shooter with a great idea in swapping out a ship of some sort in favour of an RPG like character(s).

I remember starting with the knight and if he dies you then use a wizard as your next guy. I can't remember if there was more.

Much better than 194x but not as good as other top view big name shooters but well worth the play and an excellent buy as you don't really see it floating around... ever. .

To be honest, PC-98 Touhou games are still pretty obscure, even among the series' fanbase. Most fans I know start with the first Windows game, what's-it's-name. I'm blaming ZUN for the state of modern shmups.

>>1052456
I played it myself and, to be honest, I wasn't terribly impressed. It plays like one of these example shmups included in Dezaemon titles.
But then again, I did some research and I've found out it's one of these love-it-or-hate-it games. I think it should be included in the list solely because of that. By the way, should Dezaemon games be included on the list?

>>1052620

KOLIBRI
SEGA 32x

Basically, you play as a humming bird. There's all peace and smiles. So, when you start, you need to get some nectar from the flowers, but it seems your neighboors don't like you, so you can't get nectar from the flowers they are eating.

Then, you find a very alone flower. You approach to it and start to suck it, but then A FUCKING CRYSTAL CAME ON FROM THE GROUND, FIRE YOU A LAZOR AND GAVE YOU POWERS!

Now you're a humming bird who can fire bullets, and you fight the evil bees who took possession of the flowers.

(Samurai) Zombie Nation. In addition to the completely fucked up premise, it's also one of the most visually impressive games on the NES, and the music is unlike anything else on the system. The character has momentum behind him (moreso on "Hard"), and as such, some people give this game a bad rap because of it. There's an interesting PS1 shooter called Night Raid. It had a really strange option firing system that would bounce around between enemies and pretty decent presentation as far as music and graphics go but the scoring system really set it apart. You could get positive or negative points according to whether or not you caught the garegga-style falling medals and the negative points would actually detract from your score past zero. So the game had three scoreboards, one for positive scoring, one for negative scoring and one for getting your score as close to 0 as possible by mixing playstyles.

I have to agree with this guy on the Saturn section. Many of the games there are some of the most widely known and appreciated shooters. Battle Garegga is considered the best shmup ever by no small amount of people and the Donpachi series is also a shmup fan favorite. Radiant Silvergun is pretty well known as well, not to mention Batsugun and Darius Gaiden.

The Strikers 1945 series and Gunbird are also fairly well known but I'd say they still fit since they're not really first choice material for shmups.
