A nice pipe dream is to learn Japanese someday, so I wouldn't need to rely on translators. I have a huge respect for them (or at least those who do a really good job) for making games accessible for more people, but it would be so nice to just play a game without having to rely on them and worry that they will add their own BS to the mix.

Also, some games never get translated. P2 EP PSP is a good example. The translation was being worked on for 10 years, but someone dropped their own version out of nowhere.

I've been thinking about buying it.

I've heard some people reference Deishuu Kaiki's philosophy on a fake having greater value than the original when discussing Gokinjo Boukentai as a rip-off of Earthbound which is better than Earthbound, but at the same time I've also hear it requires knowledge of the manga series to really appreciate and that is knowledge which I do not possess.

There was nearly nothing left to be translated for that patch. It's the official English Atlus script of the PS1 version with some editing to keep consistent lore terms with the rest of the series and a translated script for the additional content that was already done by an entirely different group beforehand.
cj_iwakura had been sitting on the project and stringing people along to stroke his ego when the guy who actually did the programming just got fed up, did his own script editing and released it. cj_iwakura then had the gall to infer to his sycophants that this patch was "stolen work" so they tried to go after the guy.

With the patch that's available, you CAN play it. The missions themselves are in English. It's the interstitials that require reading a text file.
