Seeing this guy in New Pork City was pretty damn cool, especially after talking to that NPC in the theater mentioning "your leader" and if you say you don't know who he is, he goes "well maybe you aren't supposed to." I think meta jokes are stupid most of the time but the Mother games usually pull them off better.

You know psp plays PS1 games and emulates a bunch of shit too? and the better comparison would be DS to psp and 3ds to Vita. In both cases you can play the previous gens, plus emulate. I personally own both because I like both Nintendo and Sony produced games, but I guess if you're a console warrior, I can see how you will use underhanded and disingenuous arguments to give your console of choice higher praise.

Hardly comparable with DS backward compatibility, a system that was still relatively new at the time. And PS1 isn't handheld and the games don't feel handheld, often rather slow-paced, systems upon systems, loading times, a lot of text, etc.

No, I get what he's saying. Prior to Pokemon, most of the "big" Gameboy games were tie-ins to console franchises or licensed shovelware. Kirby and SaGa are the only two major franchises I can think of that debuted on the thing (and NA had so little faith in SaGa that they marketed it as a handheld Final Fantasy). After Pokemon, the industry's view of handhelds shifted from an accompaniment to home consoles into a viable platform in their own right.

...A massive understatement!
Mystic Quest is what a 'watered down' game looks like. LA is a full 2d zelda with 8 dungeons that doesn't skimp on dungeon or exploration. It's on par with alttp, a SNES title (well honestly it's better), meaning it's basically a console title, for a portable.
If Pokemon popularity brought people to portable, LA's an additional exclusive that saves it from being a 1-game console.

Battle Wheels for Atari Lynx is shockingly fun for a handheld. A mix of twisted metal and FPS, you can eject and enter abandoned cars if yours is disabled, run people over, flame thrower them, deploy mines, multiplayer bots to play with.

It would have been basically impossible to find multiple humans to daisy chain together and play this back then, but it's a fun time on a emu now.

Well, you can tell LA started out as a port of ALTTP. It's obvious if you look at the map and realize that most major landmarks are in the same place as an equivalent Hyrule location.
Mabe Village = Kakariko
Mysterious Woods = Lost Woods
Kanalet Castle = Hyrule Castle
Graveyard = church
Face Shrine = Eastern Palace
Rapids Ride = Zora's Domain
Tal Tal Heights = Death Mountain
I agree that there's not much similarity left though and that LA is the better game.

Sonic has a surprisingly superb handheld career overall, maybe even better than his console one, because when his console titles started to drop in quality, we were getting both the Sonic Rush and Sonic Advance series on DS and GBA, still my favorites are still Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 on SEGA's Game Gear, especially the thing with finding the emeralds in the levels and exploring, really fun!

P.S. Sonic & Tails 1 and Sonic & Tails 2 are also a good time, just not as good for me, the former has levels that are too short and easy, while the latter makes the emeralds a pain to really get.

It's clever, but I actually prefer designs that look tiled.. that's the whole appeal. What started as a limitation quickly became an aesthetic. I don't think anyone can argue that having everything nicely ordered in squares has some kind of appealing, pleasing effect on the brain. I mean, Minecraft became ridiculously successful while many competitors that tried to offer more variety than just cubes flopped hard.
