Calm down, zoomer. Japanese developers were well known for licensed Disney games in the 80s/90s.

If I'm not mistaken, the Japanese staff still did the majority of the work, or at least the important work on this right? The quality of games developed by the American staff is a significant step down from Sonic 2

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin
It was the 1st proper Spider-Man video game to ever come out, which made you feel like you're actually Spider-Man, with his moves and all, and with taking photos of foes, resting at home, and getting money for web fluid resources, OST was a banger and it looked fantastic.
I'd still rather play this than the goyslop that we have to deal with nowadays by Insomniac for consoomers to enjoy and forget about in a week.

The ambition of the concept clearly exceeded the ability of the developers to pull it off. I loved the adventure and time/resource management aspects of it, but the central gameplay and general level layouts are a fucking mess. Still worth a play though, specially for the hilarious Sega CD version cutscenes.

True.

>I loved the adventure and time/resource management aspects of it
Same, it's crazy how it still holds up in this regard.

>but the central gameplay and general level layouts are a fucking mess.
I agree... somewhat. I find the gameplay to be excellent, it's everything you could want from 2D Spider-Man, he controls really well. I do agree that level design is the main issue though, and while I don't find it to be bad, it feels like it could've been a lot more, most levels are quite linear and/or short and the length/difficulty of it all comes from figuring out each boss' optimal strategy. It's still a fun time, but could've been a lot more fun with better level design.

Mysterio's Menace plays quite similar to this, despite it coming out 10 years later, but level design is so much more rich there, it shows what could've been.

>Still worth a play though, specially for the hilarious Sega CD version cutscenes.
I genuinely love the moody OST from those, wish I could find that track somewhere. It feels like a bad 90's cartoon, but I guess it fits the character well enough, definitely worth a watch for the laughs alone.

Traveller's Tales happened to be the first Western developer that really impressed me (I knew about RARE but didn't own DKC) because they managed to make a good platformer with Mickey Mania but they were also able to work in a tremendous amount of references. I hadn't seen so many direct references to various shorts in previous attempts at licensed games. People often talk about how Traveller's Tales games made them fans of a particular series, often even before they'd had the chance to see the movies and that was true even back in the mid-90's. Their dedication was palpable. Wish they still had the Disney licence but it would probably be used to make another series of Lego titles.

Nowhere in the op it says "best of"; that's entitled consoomer and/or autistic talk, and this thread is about what people like and feel comfortable accepting as not needing a wider authoritative scope than exactly that.

Disney.
As in, Disney in general.
It's crazy how much quality licensed Disney titles had, on one side you had Capcom in their prime making stuff for the NES and SNES, and then on the other side you had SEGA making their own stuff, sometimes with their trusted western developers, and other times in house, which to me were the better ones.
All of the Illusion and the Magical Quest titles, the film adaptations... it was superb.
