is that webm supposed to convince me? the game plays itself. you just watch knuckles run. this is a huge problem with SA2 in particular. it's repetitive as hell too.
I'll admit though that until recently, I was unaware that SA3 generally was considered the best one. I played it, and it was a step in the right direction, though it was no Genesis trilogy. but at least you can't just hold right to win, and I felt like I had reason to play it after a few hours. too bad that the artstyle is uglier than 2.

I think this has to do more with memorization than skill. I look at that .webm and shudder at the poor soul who had to memorize that huge, hazardous, unfun maze in a handheld screen.

>> No.10457965

>>10457926
Who's to say that memorization isn't a part of skill? I think it's a ridiculous notion that trial and error is an illegitimate way of designing a game. Ever play Prince of Persia? Wizardry? Castlevania? Ninja Gaiden? I don't like people who only play uber-polished Nintendo games that anyone can beat on their first try implying that games that do otherwise are somehow poorly designed. Maybe I enjoy playing the level multiple times and testing out alternate routes to see which one is the fastest, and maybe I enjoy exploring the level.

I hate how the sprites don't feel like they're connected to the world, like a flash game. I always felt this was a poor direction for Sonic, no longer does a step feel significant, and every bounce in the game world no longer feels like you're really there kicking off the ground.

This isn't relevant to your clip or anything, the games are still fine but this is something that bugged me.

>> No.10458028

>>10458005
I don't get what you mean. In what way are the sprites not connected to the world? Like, what's the disconnect between the character sprites and the level terrain?
Only problem I have with the sprites in this game are the springs and capsules. They're using the rounded redesigns from Sonic Adventure, but those were made for a 3D game. The more square designs of the springs and item monitors from the Genesis games work better for 2D games. Especially the springs, because you sort of expect them to behave like the springs in the Adventure games (meaning they activate if you touch them from any angle), but they still act like the Genesis springs (you just push against them from the side and you actually need to hit them from the top)

congrats, even your vid shows the level design is just one big rail where you hold right but (gasp) occasionally jump. this is the 7th level of the game, so yeah, they at least try to pretend it's harder.
this game entirely misses the variety and challenges that made the Genesis games good. when you remove those, all you have is holding right and jumping occasionally to watch the hedgehog go fast. which, surprise, perfectly describes SA1 and 2.

Video game player here, you don't have to memorize anything in that level, you can pick pretty much any path and it will go somewhere, it just might not be the fastest or easiest path. Just how a good sonic game should be. I play that game a lot and I doubt I've ever done the route from the OP image, I prefer taking higher paths.
The level before it is much more of a maze, and a vertical one at that, but it's (literally) separated into sections so it's pretty clear if you've made progress.
