People on /vr/ rave about earthbound but few have actually played it.

It's considered good for every aspect besides the gameplay, and I think that's kind of ironic in a way.

I am talking about the word 'gameplay', which I believe is the single most useless and misleading word in videogame terminology. But let me explain myself before you start booing.

Consider the following sentences:

This book has good bookread.

This record has good recordlisten.

This movie has good moviewatch.

So yeah, I've just made up three new words: bookread, recordlisten and moviewatch. Now these words may sound stupid to you, but that's not all there is to it. These words are also useless. To demonstrate this I'll rewrite the above sentences without using them:

This is a good book.

This is a good record.

This is a good movie.

Nope, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is essentially this somewhat infamous indie rock album by a band called Neutral Milk Hotel led by this guy Jeff Mangum. It's worshipped over on /mu/, half because it is a pretty good album, and half because there's just so many jokes to be made about the lyrics and Mangum himself.

I think he made the comparison because to him Earthbound as a game is as prevalent and discussed both as a quality product but also with various jokes (usually about its place in the market and being overpriced by sellers) being made, like with ITAOTS on /mu/.

Huh, really? Shame, the first Bubsy is worth playing. I feel people will call it a horrible game without playing the game -- those that have given the game an honest try whether they stopped at the first level or just watched the Jontron review (which, it should be noted that he clearly stopped at the first level.
