you can do stuff like Ashes or Blade of Agony or Total Chaos in GZ. so on paper at least it can do whatever. but with complex maps, at some point you're just spending most of the effort fighting the underlying map format. to go with your nail vs grenade analogy, it becomes more like sweeping the floor with a hammer.
Godot has Qodot, Unity has RealtimeCSG, Unreal still has the old BSP/CSG stuff (I think - haven't used Unreal). so you can do brushwork almost anywhere, the basic workflow hasn't changed much since Quake.

Those work for HL, BS, and OF. Decay was never officially ported to PC, so either emulate it on PS2 or use one of the mods that re-implements it. Regular Decay also has the issue of needing to manually move both characters around when playing SP, which can make certain puzzles and combat sequences very much harder, but there's the Singularity mod that makes everything SP-suitable, or Solo Mission that does a bit more redesign work but is only about a third done.

So I'm playing Doom for the first time, and I'm trying to figure out why Crispydoom still looks really different compared to gog version.

Pic related is gog version with very strong contrast between lights and darks, darks are much deeper in general, and the fade to black effect with distance will make things in the distance look true black instead of bitcrushed like in crispydoom. Also the acid looks greener, and the light illumination from the acid looks more green/vibrant too.

As a follow up..
Ive done all the ground work and debugged the crap out of the map, replacing chairs with 3d models and dividing sectors properly. To finish this it would take about a working week, to populate and create balance. The police come soon, then the swat team around half way. Its time restricted, as youll get sprayed down if you dont make it in time.

The doors arent done properly yet, but theyre the major sections to unlock as you need key passes to finish it. Itll also have to be co-op.

I got plenty of texture checking materials from the net inside the school and outside, so it will look damn well close to it.

Those weapon animations aren't very good. The vanishing point for the rifle thing looks like it's aimed off really hard to the left. It kinda looks like a shotgun too, where the hell did you get that thing? That double barrel shotgun isn't too hot either, the character's left hand gets completely deep fried during the reload. The pipe bomb toss looks really awkward with how static the hand is.

You'd be better off using some cenetered weapons for the rifle and shotgun, there's plenty of assets out there.

Theres a bunch of graphic glitches going on on the gun models. The weapons and items are totally accurate to what was used, and if you select another player your rifle is replaced with a tec 9 and the pipe bomb a molitov doing the same same. If theres easy fixes to make them nicer Id do it, ill leave fine details last.

Those guns need work, neither of them had anything remotely as nice as a Benelli M4. Their guns were actually quite poorfag, a Hi-Point 9mm carbine, a Tec-9 Mini, the shotguns being generic Savage and Stevens ones which they hacksawed.
They also basically only had 10 round magazines for the 9mm guns (as this was during the Federal AWB), they had one 15 round magazine for the carbine I think, and maybe one 50 round magazine for the pistol, which didn't want to work and which they ditched.

Their bombs were very crude stuff, of the 89 pipebombs they brought with them to school, 30 of them detonated. Their two biggest bombs were made of propane tanks and had an electronic timer, they were hoping to detonate them ahead of time in the cafeteria, but they failed to go off.

They aren't, their shotguns were a pump-action one and a break-action double barreled gun. You're also missing the 'cricket' bombs, which were little 12 gram CO2 tubes filled with gunpowder (which is as effective as it sounds).

The left-handed Benelli M4 which doesn't even animate I'd say is pretty out of place. Actually, it looks like it's ejecting rifle casings, so perhaps it's supposed to be a substitute for the Hi-Point 995 carbine, but that would still be wrong because it uses the same 9x19mm Parabellum ammunition as the Tec-9.

The original Doom.exe can't handle too much shit in a level so a limit-removing level or port uses only the doors and switches that exist in the original games minus the crashes when levels are too big
Most of the big name mappers use Boom format so a source port that calls itself vanilla or limit-removing (crispy/chocolate) will break any custom elevators/doors

tl;dr use Woof for 90% of levels, PrBoom+ is the most basic Boom version you could use but it has some edge case bugs that make it not worth chasing the pure experience dragon

I use mostly DSDA-Doom and GZDOOM, I don't play Quake.
DSDA-Doom, it's lightweight, it has enough customization available like a hud.cfg, it supports MBF21, rewind is useful when you're training in a map.
GZDoom for anything that requires it, it's compatible with most wads.
I have Eternity Engine as well, I downloaded it for Heartland that I have yet to play, but I guess there are other cool exclusive wads.

They should all behave Vanilla (except the Sword and Saw), and the sprites are all paletted. Maybe I could do some kind of truecolor version some time, because working with the green range for the plasma for instance, drove me up the goddamn walls, so that could maybe be a bit better, but that'll have to be some sort of distant maybe.
I actually worked very consciously with the palette for Phase 3, which is why the weapons don't look like absolutely washed out shit, so there wouldn't be a lot else I'd change there for something like that.

Primarily they're built on the Decorate version of the 94P guns, so there's the bulletpuff effects and ejecting casings as cosmetics (which won't be in the MBF21 version, obviously). If you dislike those features, go comment them out, it's very easy.

But I'll humor you and say that most of these faux-retro FPS games cite Doom, Quake etc. as their inspirations but don't actually understand what made them good in the first place, so they end up being caricatures of those games that are only similar on a surface level. It's not actually that difficult. Most modern Quake ports have third person built-in in the form of the chase_active command (and a couple other commands that control camera offset that I forget). The Malice total conversion from 1997 even has a fully adaptive third person camera that you can switch to at any time.
Using FTE engine with the Quake 3 map format (precise collisions) would make a platformer extremely trivial.

Just finished Thy Flesh Consumed for the first time. It was hard as fuck, specially going in blind and in UV. Perfect Hatred was the most intense shit, Romero forgot to put ammo in it. I didn't hate it though, it would probably become much easier once I know where all the secrets are. The only map I really despised was Against Thee Wickedly (E4M6), it was not as hard as the first two maps but the level layout where you have to constantly drop down to the lava and take the teleport in different angles was a pain. Other than that, I liked the episode overall, some really fun maps in there.

It's kind of a proto-Hexen. No RPG elements to speak of. Just one spell with infinite ammo and two limited special attacks. It's a lot slower than Wolf3D, enemies are all melee until the final boss and your normal spell is pretty weak. Level progression is not entirely linear, some levels have multiple exits and there are branching and looping paths. I'd say it's worth a playthrough for historical interest alone, it's short and not very difficult.

Years upon years ago I played a really great Hexen wad, it had a map that used the Darkmere tileset and fog, and it was like a big stone tower surrounded by swamp you climbed, at the top was a big floor with stained glass windows all around you could break and fall through while fighting the mobs. I know it's late (another busy day + writing it at 1AM while I remember before falling asleep) and I apologize for that and rough sketches, but here I go anyway:
Blue area is opened after using three secret buttons on marked places or somewhere nearly (depending on what's best for the map's current structure and such). Red mark in the area should open the way to the red area, obviously.
Both zones should feature significant amount of fireblu: you're allowed to mix it up with other texture to your liking. Same goes for any geometry details and additional decorations. Only thing I would mention is that red area should include difficult fight (Cyberdemon or Archviles) with a corresponding reward.

Malice fans (or haters), I've taken the code from the patched moddb release and doing some tweaks to it to try to smooth out the rough edges of the game. So far I've got:
>game no longer forces FOV changes on you (some cutscenes may look odd, haven't tested fully)
>crazy enemy health scaling by difficulty removed and replaced with +10% faster think rate per skill level + some per-enemy behavior tweaks on different skill levels
>shotguns no longer consume double the ammo they logically would
>explosive barrel health cut from 120 to 40 so they're actually worth shooting
>turrets will actually swivel towards instead of just snapping you so you can dodge them
>magazine ammo tracks correctly per weapon instead of resetting for various reasons (might try to figure some CSQC hud stuff for a magazine ammo indicator)

If you've got any ideas let me know. I'm not trying to do anything too crazy though, just trying to make Malice a bit better since it's pretty overlooked.

It's because Malice sets a somewhat higher cl_forwardspeed, and a much higher sv_maxspeed. This effectively enables a Doom-like diagonal running. If you put 'cl_forwardspeed 360' and 'sv_maxspeed 600' into regular Quake you'll get the same effect.
If I do anything to it, it will be to try to make the always run setting work more like you would expect, but I don't want to change how movement actually feels.

There are a few things that I noticed while tweaking it:
1. Having the face have a centerline pixel, as opposed to having it doubled over evenly, makes it near impossible to get anything resembling normal eyebrows. At this scale it either looks too far apart, or too close.
2. Lighting. It looked like you were shining a flashlight on freedoom guys face.
3. Musculature. Doomguy has a strong face, promounced features. With so few pixels you kinda need to or it looks like you're a potato. No room for subtlety which leads to:
4. Dithered stubble. That's stilly. Don't do that. It might work at a high res, but at 32x32 pixels it's pretty rough.

nightmare difficulty is completely different (halved max hp instead of turret ogres).
settings default to no viewbob, no viewtilt and no weapon sway. an idiotic graf-ism, but can be re-enabled through the menus.
sounds are different, sharper - not sure if higher fidelity or if it's just the mixing. the included soundtrack uses de-emphasis, which is likely incorrect (sounds a bit muffled).
maps got re-lit with colored and bounced lighting, and initially there were fuckups with it (rooms intended as pitch-black not pitch-black anymore). I think that got fixed though. some levels got minor updates to geometry.
not sure, but I think the logic runs at 60 instead of 72 fps. I remember how setting the framerate higher resulted in some weird jittery movement interpolation, but I can't seem to replicate that now, so maybe it also got fixed.
kex crashes with some mods that work fine under winquake. possibly has to do with red text in messages which got repurposed for language support purposes.
