This game is so fucking good. I hate arcade games, but I've been playing this nonstop since I tried it at a barcade. How is this shit even possible?? Why is this not talked about in the same breath as PacMan and Donkey Kong, this shit beats the dick off of every other game at that time.

The world of Joust is so unique and cool! I've been unironically looking for Joust fanfic just so I can h ar someone's take on what life is like in a world where they fly birds around and joust and there's dinosaurs and lava ghosts and knights are born from eggs. It's just so fucking sick

Welcome to Joust, newfag. Enjoy your stay.

Joust has ALWAYS been based and has always been beloved, but for whatever reason the license holders let the franchise rot. You’d have a lot more people posting in this thread 15 or 20 years ago. One screen games besides Pac-man have basically all been pushed out of the cultural zeitgeist. Newfags have no familiarity with it because they have never been exposed to it, but it was on top of the world at one point.
Joust is definitely one of, if not the best arcade games of all time. Sincerely timelessly fun. So fun Nintendo straight up copied the game 1:1 for balloon fight.

I have actually written an extremely detailed outline on how to make a new Joust on this board before. In short, it requires turning it into a rogue-light and you transition to stages seamlessly on a balloon fight-esque “balloon trip” with occasional boss battles.

It’s a shame so much time has passed that Joust has been forgotten to younger generations (not that I’m super old), and a reminder that the never ending march of time will trample us all to dust.

>> No.10443868

The modern indie arcade game Killer Queen took some obvious inspiration from Joust, you might want to try it out.

My previous job (retail bullshit, enormous store) had a 1up arcade machine in the breakroom with this on it, and I played the shit out of it. Fantastic game. The other gamers at that job were lame as fuck though. They'd bring their Switches in to play at lunch, and I started doing the same. They mostly ignored that cabinet in favour of playing Animal Crossing or faggy RPGs on their Switches. Nothing wrong with Switch, but holy hell I think those "gamers" were allergic to anything that required even the tiniest amount of skill. They couldn't fathom why I'd want to play games like Outrun on my Switch, or why I was looking forward to the upcoming Metroid Dread. After all, paying full price for a 10-20 hour game is foolish when for the same price I could get 80+ hours of grinding and farming, amirite fellower zoomers??

It’s got a real “Heavy Metal” vibe. It’s very unique and not afraid to be corny, therefore making it genuinely cool.
Late 70’s/Early 80’s is full of awesome shit like this in fantasy and sci-fi, nobody is brave enough to do this kind of thing anymore. Newfags make everything gay.

Look at any of the marquee and cabinet art for arcade classics. They take strange sci-fi or fantasy concepts of their little beep boop games and make them absolutely epic.

Joust was mishandled through the years, they needed to keep it in the public consciousness.

As far as the concept goes for knights riding ostriches, perhaps they took inspiration from “Wizards”.

Joust is not a /zr/ approved game. The perfection of the simple elegant controls is beyond my comprehension, hence bad design. Being able to hit by a skilled player I'm trying to steal from, or just happen to get in the way of with my random spastic mashing, is artificial difficulty. There's no training stage. Just a short tutorial that shows me how literally everything I need to know works. BEFORE THE GAME!!! How the fuck was I supposed to know I wasn't supposed to just press start and start rambling to my youtube viewers about how I'm a clueless fuckwit? There's no DLC, no items with a marketplace to sell them. No loot boxes. Literally nothing that makes a game worth playing. Not even achievements. Some larping 30yo grandpa told me there are bonuses for not dying, by enemy, getting in the way of a skilled player, or an heroing. He's a fucking lying ass lying liar. I never seen any of those.

based, really fantastic game. I'd say Vs. Balloon Fight is also good and similar, with an arguably better mini-game
I think it'd be better if Joust was widescreen so there was more flying space, but that's about all I could wish for
as for the design of the game and how they settled on ostriches, lava, eggs and everything, I'm pretty sure they did it the Nintendo way where you come up with gameplay ideas first and then worry about aesthetics after

One problem might be that Williams games were more unreliable than some other arcade cabs of the period (Namco cabs in particular seemed to have much better durability which is why they often stayed in use for decades). Guy on Arcade Museum forum believed it was because Williams liked running their boards at speeds that were too much for the components used in them.

Midway did put sinks on the RAM on some stuff like Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man boards. That may actually be why Ms. Pac-Man machines proved unusually sturdy and long-lived compared to a lot of contemporary arcade cabs and they were still a regular sight into the 2000s. Seriously 4116 RAM was not known for being dependable and anything you could do to keep them cool helped.

still remember in 2003 when i was 15 and i played one at a flea market, it was at least 20 at that time. got to the banana board on one quarter before i died. of course it helped that the game has a notorious collision bug where you can just go through the ghosts sometimes and it doesn't register a collision. i know that bug happened to me at least once when i was playing it.

Efficient, simple, and endlessly enjoyable gameplay that is engaging for newbies and veterans alike, an intriguing setting that encourages imagination, and appealing readable graphics. All the necessary parts that make any truly great game great. Anything beyond that is window dressing and should not be factored into the overall quality of a game, unless it's in a negative way because it distracts from or otherwise lessens the impact of the aforementioned parts. Balloon fight is a joust clone. It's cool I guess because you get 2 balloons.
