What are your personal contributions to retro games?

Do you dump games? scan magazines? Help maintening websites / spread information ? Make mods/maps/romhacks ? Write guides? Repair hardware for other people ? etc Surely you're not just consuming and not giving back?

Let's find out if /vr/ still has people who care or if it's 100% zoomers shitting on popular franchises and other types of shitposters.
Make sure to remain as vague as you need to be to remain anonymous. This isn't a larping "Please thank me and praise me and be jealous of me" thread, let's not act like prototype hoarders between ourselves.

15 years I dumped a Japanese game. These days every game is listed everywhere but at the time, that game was completely unknown and didn't have a single mention on the western internet and only appeared on Japanese websites. A couple of years ago that game got a translation.
I made maps and mods for games. Also romhacks of other games.
Done some research that I posted on TCRF, only posting stuff that I personally checked for within the game's code or art or in magazines.
Wrote some FAQs posted on gamefaqs, nothing quite extensive but insightful little things acquired by going through the game's code
There is more but I'll stop here to remain anonymous

I dumped a few isos missing on archive, some of them i even bought off ebay just to do so.

I rescued like 50+ PCI/AGP graphics cards from the scrap a couple of years ago (pic is a fraction of the lot), along with a few other pc hardware from 95-2000ish. Haven't had the time to check they all work, but some of them certainly do. I wouldn't call that 'doing something for retro' but I'd give them to people who'd appreciate them. If any of yall need a diamond something hit me up at Anonymous

I compiled the high quality manual scans that were released by Sega, Konami, and Nintendo for the mini consoles. Nobody appreciates manuals, but they always contain information that will make these games easier to play. I think a lot of people play old school games blindly and if they cant brute force their way through a blind playthrough they just assume the game was designed to be impossibly hard to beat. No, in fact, the games expected you to reference the manuals because how else will you learn what the fuck is going on?

My father set the policy in place that every thrift-store immediately throw away any floppy disks into the garbage upon receiving them.
You'd think it was to protect people from data mining, but no, obviously not since it's not uncommon to see used CD-R's in thrift-stores. No he just hated floppy disks.

Dump games (most formats, tape is pretty ghetto though and I don't have a 5.25'' disk option), mags, audio CDs (music, dramas). Have kept up a few collections until others could mirror (still keep them up-to-date).
Also dumped books related to companies artists or writers, but that's not so much /vr/ as it is whatever general it fits in. Translated a few games too.
Still plenty of cheap shit to dump, especially if it's Micro or "modern" PC stuff. Pretty easy too.

I keep a number of full romsets on soulseek in case archive or http websites are down and somehow soulseek ports remain open. Also have my favorite gamefaq guides and a few official PDFs available too.

Always wanted to make a faq but my favorite games have pretty much perfect ones. Can't think of anything I'd contribute. Last time I checked, Dragon Quest wikis were really bad, ran on fandom (so lots of ads and bad ui), and had tons of missing info. Maybe I can make a simple DQ wiki that runs on HTML 4 with no css or javascript.

In essence, yes, but also no.

I tracked down a whole mess of memory addresses that manipulated aspects of the game, I have no doubt that this inspired research into other AC games where similarities were found.

I've found a way to manipulate not just AP and energy levels, but ammo counters, weapon types, what projectiles a weapon in a given slot fires, how much damage it does, whether or not it costs ammo or energy, whether or not it has recoil, raw player velocity addresses, map coordinates, behavior, appearance and RGB color of most projectiles, even what parts of a player's AC even display to begin with and where on the AC they display (including a mess of unused hardpoints), and even the particulars of AC1's chase camera behavior.

All found through RAM editing and nothing but. I disclosed what I found, where I found it at, and I have no doubts that inspired others to check stuff out for themselves. From the mouse-aiming hack to the dual analog hack, I take credit for nothing other than maybe being an inspiration. I don't have that much talent, just talented in pattern recognition.
