Anyone ever owned/played one of these? Any thoughts or opinions on the last of the NEC consoles?

Never played one. One of the mystery consoles you'd see in an EGM every once in a while.

>> No.1041173

Apparently, due to it not being released in the west and having a niche market and hardware, mostly only eroge games and text-heavy, obscure RPG's (that often had eroge elements) were published for it. Didn't really live up to its daddy.

That'd be great if I wasn't on 56K. =) Broadband's not available in my area.

Yup... So many times I saw that thing. The later versions made me think it was a 'computer' for really cheap and didn't understand why.

Yeah, I remember it being advertised for sale by some importers in EGM mags from the mid 90's. From what I've seen, it's very heavy on FMV games. Lots of eroge, like it was made for otaku. Seems like I also read somewhere that NEC had some policy against driving/racing games for it.

I emulated Pia Carrot.
It's not an impressive system. The video capabilities are alright but the resolution is lacking.

Apparently there were many homebrew games made as well. I'm reading that NEC marketed their own development kit for the system. NEC PC-FXGA/98IF

I have one. Unfortunately something is wrong with the drive and I can only get one of my four games to halfway load.

I doubt anyone ever did.

Anyways, Mednafen PC-FX is a great emulator for it.

Even on developed countries, there are some area where telecomunication companies have little/no interest at all, so they just leave a shitty telephone line from the end of the 50's (well I'm saying this but these lines are still more reliable than the ultra-fragile optic fiber ones).

>> No.1044938

I have one. It's okay but HW is obviously pretty outdated compared to its competitors. It has some cool SRPGs, dungeon crawlers, platformers and one great SHMUP (and one not so great but pretty funny FMV fighter) but majority of games is FMV "games" that make Dragon's Lair gameplay look complex. It's cool console to have if you can find one cheap (and it plays burned games just fine) but unless you can read Japanese you will be playing like 10 games at best. And those 10 games are really the only ones worth playing on PC-FX. Also gamepad and mouse are pretty cheap and crappy, build quality is nothing like the PC Engine gamepads.

>> No.1045072

Why didn't the PC-FX get any Viper games?

>> No.1047153

Never played any PC-FX game, I don't even know if there's any emulator other than Magic Engine FX, but even that is probably pretty bad.

I think it was a little relevant in Japan. IIRC the PS1 SDK was compatible with it, along with Windows 3.11/95.

You'd think they'd be able to at least provide dual ISDN or IDSL easily enough these days.

Youtube seems particularly terrible with aggressively streaming everything, but maybe it might be worthwhile if it could be downloaded?

Weird cards.

>> No.1047178

The PC-FX failed because NEC focused too much on FMV quality, which had long since died by that point. Also, most people who owned a PC Engine already moved on to the SFC and/or PSX, as most the good devs stuck to those platforms, even Hudson.

I don't think I really miss having NEC around as a hardware developer. It was Hudson who handled most of the PCE hardware anyway.

Can you import the libretro mednafen core into RetroArch?

>> No.1047215

I've been interested in these Japanese consoles lately. So is this a later version of the PC98? Ir is that its own thing entirely? If it is a later version is it backwards compatible?

>> No.1047221

>>1047215
I think you're totally lost there. And it has nothing to do with PC-98. Literally nothing.

>> No.1047223

>>1047215
No, this is the successor to the PC Engine.(Turbografx-16 in the US)

The PC-98 was also made by NEC, but that was a home computer. The PCE/PC-FX are consoles. It's not compatible with PC-98 nor PCE games.

Funnily enough, yes you can import a libretro core into Retroarch.
