I was obsessed with this game when I was 10, even made my own boardgame version with my Heroquest play set. Any other Roguelikes for consoles you enjoy, none of that ASCII ugly shit for permavirgins.

Isn’t ToeJam and Earl a rogue-like? I never would’ve guessed that seeing it in stores as a kid.

It doesn't have the real time turn based combat kind of thing, so I'd say its a rogue-lite?

Shiren The Wanderer is as good as it gets

>> No.10405989

This. The Shrien games are the only other notable ones. Consoles don't have the memory to handle real roguelikes like OP complains about at the end.

There is Dragon Crystal for Master System, a true roguelike with no unlockable between playthrough. There are a couple other that comes to mind, like Izuna the unemployed ninja, both for DS and Time Stalkers for Dreamcast

What??

Child Of Light is arguably a real time turn based game.

The problem with roguelike games on console is they can't generate and hold in memory actually random levels. So instead they have a series of pre-made levels that get cycled through. Shiren tries to randomize things a little more like with the fortune teller who predicts the weather for the run. You still get the same maps, but a 'hot winds' run for example has more traps and certain enemies swapped out.

I don't know how to describe it any better. Its "real time" because all turns take place at the same time, and turn based because everyone does one action at a time (until the next turn)

>>10406092
That's not how the term real time is used in regards to video games.

As another anon said, Shiren is the pinnacle of console roguelikes. There's also torneko, who has mystery dungeon games of his own.

Fatal Labyrinth is closely related to Dragon Crystal, a pretty fun Master System game

>> No.10406947

this game is awful, like not even fun good.

This remake looks like such a cheap piece of shit compared to the original

>> No.10407719

>>10406956
I never played either so looked at screens. Neither look actually good but at least the remake is higher res. What makes the original look better to you?

>>10405652
If you like the actual gameplay then some more traditional roguelikes might be worth looking into for you.

The Ancient Cave in Lufia 2. I know it's not a full game by itself but it's still a lot of fun. 100 floors and I think you could find some persistent items.

Fatal Labyrinth & Dragon Crystal are so closely related that I'm reasonably sure they have some of the exact same level layouts. Absolutely loved both. Dragon Crystal was possibly my second most rented sms game after Dragons Trap. We would have been friends OP. None of my friends ever understood HeroQuest.

How the FUCK do you deal with floors filled with dragons?

If you are talking about Lufia 2, hope and pray. Shit was brutal without modern strategy guides. The last boss is also a massive dick. You'll never be more demoralized as a snes loving 12-14yo.

You're not alone OP.

I loved this game back then and have fond memories of it.

If these are your criteria then you have absolute dogshit troglodyte taste. You are aesthetically retarded, no point explaining it to you in the first place.

Pretty much the same answer.
