The combat could be better, but the exploration, the shop and thesemi-randomized factors of the gameplay makes it fun. Which is also why the sequel fails, taking out all the good stuff to focus on the bad combat.

It had an awesome build/id engine look, locked you to first person in the cab (which is based), and has the awesome concept of a future dystopia so dangerous people need to hail battle taxis for safe travel. That alone makes it worthwhile. I never got around to playing the sequel.

This and Interstate 76 are the most unique car combat games ever and sadly nobody has attempted these ideas since, not even an indie dev (that I’m aware of).

I also want to say “Quarantine” is a shit generic name and the NA boxart was shit and pretentious.
If they called it “Hard Rock Cab” in the USA like Japan and gave it that 80’s movie poster cover, it would have had way more appeal and probably be a cult classic.

If I were a talented and inspired autist I’d make a spiritual sequel on EDuke32. In fact, I bet the first person to do so would have a minor hit on their hands if they could touch up Quarantine/Hard Rock Cab’s jankier elements.

Well imagine you're playing Doom, but you can't strafe, and if you decide to stop you need the wind up acceleration of a car to start moving again. And the AI isn't very good and all samey as well, with only their weapons sometimes being different.

You can try hit&run tactics, hit while driving, turn around, repeat; but mostly you'll just be standing still spamming the weapons. It's either that or a chase and shooting other cars from behind while they only try to run away or lay mines on the road.

It's not THAT bad but there is no depth to it

GBA tech limitations and overambitious developers trying to do the impossible is absolute gigasoul. It's strange thinking that there will never be video games like this ever again and they only had a chance to exist in this one specific time period where handheld hardware was just barely powerful enough for it but smartphones hadn't been invented yet. I can run FZero GX or GTA3 on my phone (if I wanted to).

IIRC Saturn could do transparencies on purely flat 2D objects, it was polygons (or sprites drawn on a polygonal surface) that it could not make transparent due to it's use of quads over tris.

The Saturn also had the ability to take a sprite/texture/polygon/etc and instead of rendering it solid render it as a checkerboard so that the RF/Composite connection to a CRT would blur that into a transparent image (Like that waterfall in Sonic 1 everyone uses as an example), and there is an emulator that has the ability to intercept that call and just plain make it transparent, but IIRC it's just one rather outdated emulator that has that feature and I am pretty sure it's not being used in that video.

Picrel is a screenshot of Megaman X4 on Saturn with no filters or emulator tricks, notice the transparent tube in the foreground... but that the spotlight in the background which is also supposed to be transparent is using the checkerboard feature instead.

Every time I saw webms about this game I was thinking "the Dreamcast's Mega Man Legends looks interesting"

but now I looked it up and it's a PSX game. I gotta play this.

>it was polygons (or sprites drawn on a polygonal surface) that it could not make transparent due to it's use of quads over tris.

Well no, it can do transparencies...but if they're layered on top of a VDP 2 layer (like a skybox image for a 3D game) the transparency won't render on any of those elements without some massive convoluted workarounds that are a pain to implement and will likely eat a lot of performance. Burning Rangers presents transparent sprites in a 3D environment for it's water and fire effects, but it really kills the performance because the game has to constantly copy and apply the transparencies over the any VDP 2 elements, leading to a lot of overdraw and wasted performance iirc

It isn't the only 3D racing game but what's really impressive is how smooth the track is running, separately from the car's 3D model. If you watch the 3D car, it's updating the rotation at some low framerate, but if you look at the track, it's moving perfectly at high framerate, keeping the actual gameplay smooth.
