Feels like the latter. It's basically just RCT2 with a load of quality-of-life stuff. All of the "official" new rides fit the original art style and sprite work so well, you wouldn't be able to tell that they weren't a part of the base game. You can also import RCT1 assets to the game, so it's essentially the best way to play retro RCT these days, though I will admit that RCT1 still has charm on its own.

There are some "official" custom rides added, but you still need the base RCT2 to load in assets. RCT1 is only needed if you want to import scenarios

Yeah, pretty much all the flat ride reskins - or at least the decent ones - are really old. I don't know of any new custom flat that has been made in the last 10 years.

I think part of the reason is that in vanilla RCT2, flat rides were limited to 4x4 at most, which is really small and just doesn't look good for most flat rides. You were also limited to reskinning an existing ride - your ride had to animate the same as something that already existed. So custom flat rides just weren't that appealing. Shoestring rides don't look great but they can at least be a reasonable size.

With the new save format in OpenRCT2, it's now possible to work around these limitations but there just aren't many people working on custom rides. All the new coaster types added to OpenRCT2 so far were made by the same person.

However, there has been some work done on it. One person has made significant progress on a custom Huss Condor ride so perhaps that will eventually make its way into the game.

The ride names did the atmosphere for me; it was like a psychedelic nightmare of a pharmaceutical factory.

The part that grabbed me were the flashing tiles when guests walked over them and activated a clipping effect - usually that would be undesirable, but unintentional or not, added a really eerie effect to the area.

Went back and took some photos for posterity. Not sure if we want to continue it again next week but certainly a good candidate for clipping an intro from. I might try to finally learn that.
