This kind of shit, since getting used to linux, I've found to only make things more difficult and prone to bullshit. The best way to use almost any software that isn't in your distro's official repos is to just fucking download the source and compile it yourself, then just make an alias/desktop shortcut to launch it. It ends up being not entirely dissimilar to having a folder for your games and shit as you would on windows. This is easier of course if you're on a distro with lots of libraries for compiling in its repos like Debian, Gentoo or anything Ubuntu based, tracking down dependencies on something like Arch can be a pain in the balls.

This. It looks like the flatpak is pretty well maintained.

https://flathub.org/apps/org.zdoom.GZDoom

You get used to weird shit after a minute. Sometimes you'll download something from your ditro's repo, like retroarch, only to find that it's out of date and they want you to the appimage from their itch page instead. I would never add a ppa like OP unless it seemed to be very well supported by the dev.

a truly Graf moment

>> No.10381753

With the wonders of modern technology, we have been able to make a computer game from 1993 run like ass in ways never before conceived by the human mind. Only in the 21st century could we bloat a piece of software's system requirements to rival that of a successor released nearly 30 years later.

Today, we salute the heroes in inefficiency that are Graf Zahl and other contributors to the GZDoom codebase. Your immense efforts in producing mediocrity are an inspiration to us all.

Yeah there's a good reason why native Linux gaming never really caught on
>oh you need OSS installed for this, ALSA is not a supported option
>this needs an image compression library that you're gonna have to download somewhere else
>this one's not compatible with your version of glibc
>OpenGL error! Have fun figuring out what the fuck caused that
>FMVs won't play? Sounds like your gstreamer install is broken
>fullscreen mode is only supported in old versions of XFree86
And once you finally go to a forum or IRC channel asking for tech support you get told that they only support a default Ubuntu configuration with Gnome desktop in whatever version the lead developer happens to run. Anything else? You're on your own.
The dependency hell on Linux must be experienced firsthand to be believed

We've got to collectively stop taking linux seriously or its never going to stop to take itself seriously. Its the classic shithead kid you try to bail out but he's mad as you bail him out and even madder when you dont bail him out again, they made the shithead kid but as an OS. He's great at his job once you do all the work for him to prove it, and you should be so lucky to get to help him do the bare minimum everyone else can do in seconds.
