I know this will sound autistic as hell but playing Roblox in 2008 or so and starting to comprehend heavier life concepts around age 12, these skyboxes and 3D environments invoked a real sense of wonder. Like their shittiness itself just gave it a weird atmosphere that I couldn't help but project onto.

One of my favorite games. I grew up in a tropical place so this game hit home. Getting on a little boat and sailing around is a specific power fantasy for me.

I want this so bad it makes me sad now.

I think the first recorded known "comfy" comes from Zelda Link To the Past

The village with it's bar, library, blacksmith, thieves den/hang out, the hidden hiding place under the bridge, the witch with her comfy house, the church/santuary, the lost woods with the animals running along, the Flute Boy forest with his animal friends

This was all in late 1991 / early 1992 and I can't think of anything that predates this

for me, it's the coastal areas and islands in jak 3. the rest of the wasteland sucks and is just a chore to drive through, but here there are no marauders and there's this eerily calm music instead. you really feel it when driving down the coast on a sunrise or if you jetboard to one of the islands.

You might be right.
Stuff like Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1-3 are kinda jank for towns and comfy, nothing from that NES or early 1989-1990 Genesis era really has that (yet). The only thing I can think of is Crystalis in 1990 had that one mountain side town that was kinda comfy
